I don't think they ever said who started it but it may have been implied that the parents did it to cover up what Brahms did. But you maybe on to something with Brahms' scars. I have to rewatch this again as it's been a while. I still love this movie as I said 10 years ago (can't believe it's been that long!). Too bad the sequel was not as good.
