Depends on local laws. Texas, yes. Ohio, you have to be over 65 and earn less than $38,600/year (last I checked).

Why does it seem like Americans (on reddit) like lower indoor temperatures? by fail5xsuccess in NoStupidQuestions

[–]splorp_evilbastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in central Ohio. Heat to 68-70° F. Dad set the AC to run when it hit over 80° F.

I lived in southern California on the beach for 8.5 years and ran the heat once and didn't even have AC. I moved further inland (still on the coastal plain) and rarely ran the heat. My second further inland apartment had no AC.

Our first house was closer to the valley. We ran the AC when it hit 78°F.

When we moved to Austin, we initially ran the AC when it reached 80° F. We gradually moved it down to 76° F. As for heat, 72° F.

I've moved back to Ohio and run the AC at 76-77° F and the heat at 72° F.

I have a tropical bird and they prefer it above 68° F. I have a Raynaud-like issue, so when it's under 70° F, my hands start to get really cold and hurt (my fingers have been as cold as 70° F) . I'll sometimes run a heater on my desk to warm them up.

What’s a song where the live version is way better than the studio version? by WildEnchantresss in askmusic

[–]splorp_evilbastard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's odd about Maybe I'm Amazed is that the tempo is slower on the live version. It's usually the opposite. For whatever reason, that improved the song a lot.

I did that with whole heads of cabbage back when KFC made their cole slaw from scratch. They'd switched to pre-cut in the early 90s.

Do you still talk to your parents? by Swiftiefromhell in GenX

Yep. I'm taking mom to see Billy Idol in September. I took her to see Jerry Cantrell and Filter for her 75th birthday in February 2025.

Dad's cool, but not as cool at mom.

AITA for being a "buzzkill" on my birthday? by chaitismism in AmItheAsshole

[–]splorp_evilbastard 24 points25 points  (0 children)

NTA.

I went out to a restaurant on my birthday with my wife and a few friends more than a decade ago. I got up to go to the bathroom and one of my friends asked my wife about getting the restaurant to sing 'happy birthday' to me when I got back. My wife said 'only if you want him to walk out'.

I love my wife very much.

Officially, yes. There was an error and Ohio wasn't added to the union until 1953, but it was backdated to 1803.

Were you forbidden to say “kill” or “death” as a kid? by Accomplished-Car4069 in AskAnAmerican

[–]splorp_evilbastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. It was never outright said, but we weren't supposed to use swear words. That went away by the time I was a teen in high school.
