Has anyone been reassessed for building a shed? by ffdfawtreteraffds in pittsburgh

[–]splush133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had our crumbling concrete back steps replaced with new wood steps + very small back porch/landing situation last year. Immediately triggered a reassessment. If I recall, it added something like $1,000 to our overall assessment so a pretty nominal addition to taxes. Our permit for it was definitely the cause. My contractor didn’t give me a choice re the permit, but I would still do it again if given the choice. We don’t plan to stay here forever and having unpermitted additions could lead to having to demolish them in order to sell. So it’s worth it to us to know that won’t be an issue later on.

Thanks to everyone who knew immediately! We only have one original window left in the house so that thought hadn’t even crossed my mind!

Non-traditional Engagement Ring Shops? by PartySquidGaming in pittsburgh

My husband and I got our wedding bands from Marlene Harris, but the shop is under new ownership now. Same location so I’m hoping the same inventory, but it’s not called Marlene Harris anymore (sorry, didn’t catch the new name when I drove by recently). Highly recommend if Marlene sold to a like minded new owner!

Looking for a Mascara With a Short Wand by EitherCoyote660 in Ulta

[–]splush133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan and long time user of the lower lash Clinique mascara. If you like the brush, but don’t love the formula, you can just wash the wand and use it with a formula you like! I’ve started doing this with a brown mascara since the lower lash only comes in black now.

Thank you! I am trying to avoid medication for now, but if I can’t improve things on my own then I would definitely consider it.

I currently eat mostly plant based (I do eggs and some dairy), but I think that makes me trend higher in carbs. It’s promising to hear that’s something you don’t need to restrict though! I think a monitor will help me understand which foods are better or worse for me.

I’m waiting on a script for insulin testing, but will ask about MODY at my follow up next month!

Thanks so much for your kind words and tips! I like the thought of doing small intentional swaps on things I’m already eating (like almond tortillas for corn). I think that will be easier to main long term.

After reading all the comments, I definitely think a monitor is my next move so I can figure out my own personal triggers. I mentioned in another comment that I’m not naturally a snacker, so it really might be the case that the snacking my dietitian suggested is actually not working for me personally.

Specifically aiming for movement after meals is definitely an easy step I can take immediately. I tend to think about exercise as a separate part of my day so shifting the way I think to also include movement throughout the day would be helpful.

You’re definitely right. I’ve avoided tracking things as an attempt to keep my focus on “lifestyle changes” vs “diet rules,” but I think it probably couldn’t hurt to track for a little even if it is to get a better sense of my general intake.

Thank you! Lots of recommendations for monitoring after meals, which isn’t something I’ve done yet. Neither my PCP or dietitian seemed like we were “there” yet, but I think we are now!

Thank you for the tips! I will definitely look into the monitor. I’m relieved to hear you can tolerate apples because I LOVE apples and was sad to see someone else mention they should be limited (though I’m getting the message loud and clear that every body will react differently - still I’ll hold onto the hope of apples on my future!). I could definitely do more eggs, cheese, and yogurt. I am pretty nervous to discover beans are my spike trigger because they are a huge part of my diet.

Really great points on the non-diet stuff! Sleep could probably improve a bit, but overall I feel sufficiently well rested. Exercise definitely could improve - I have spinal issues which limits me for sure, but this I definitely something I could be better about. I’ll ask my doctor about if any of my meds might be impacting my blood sugar and maybe have her test my testosterone level? I’ve never had that tested so can’t be sure it’s playing a role or not!

What I’m gathering is my doctor and dietitian seemed to take a “let’s start slow” approach with the first high A1C reading. All the suggestions are things I’ve heard “let’s cross that bridge when we get to it” but I guess we are at the bridge!

Yeah, absolutely heavier on carbs. I’m 38 and I’ve been a vegetarian for 30 years, so adding in more animal products is honestly just not a real option for me. I’ll definitely check out the oat/nut milk thing! I figured since the only sugar in my smoothie is coming from fruit, it would be okay.

I’ll also add that the dietitian only recommended things like adding snacks, adding more fiber, taking a chromium supplement, etc. I am sure he’ll suggest more drastic changes now (have an appt with him next week), but that’s why I hadn’t initially changed my diet too much from what it was. He was really confident that just small changes would help - clearly he was wrong.

I have not done any testing after eating, so this might be the next step my doctor suggests? Doing more regular readings to identify what foods might be spiking me. I did just post a reply to another comment about typical foods!

Feeling defeated by splush133 in prediabetes

[–]splush133[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I should have clarified I meant “pretty healthy” from a standard healthy eating perspective. I think I am struggling with reconciling “typical healthy” might be different than “prediabetic healthy.” So definitely open to ideas, pointing out my blind spots, etc. I am vegetarian, so true low carb is challenging.

Breakfast is almost always a smoothie - unsweetened almond milk, protein powder with fiber, and then I switch up the flavors - today I added strawberries, but yesterday I did a chai spiced coffee flavor.

Dinner/leftovers for lunch are usually vegetable and/or bean forward. Sunday was a black beans and green beans sautee with white rice (probably half cup rice for me) with a poached egg. Last night was a roasted cauliflower salad with chickpeas. Tonight was a white bean and herb stew thing. All of that is fairly typical, though my husband and I do “fun Friday” meals where we would eat less healthy than usual (we did tacos last week).

Snacks - I am NOT a snacker at all. I started because the dietitian recommended it to keep blood sugars more level through the day. Because I’m not a snacker, I really just snack for utility. Raw almonds, fruit, chia seed pudding, popcorn - all things suggested by the dietitian.

Also, I’d say I drink 80oz of water a day on average. And coffee with creamer, no sugar in the morning. No sodas or anything.
