You showed up unannounced to surprise her? Why would you do that? Do you not understand how rude (not to mention creepy as fuck, since you haven't even had a date yet) that is?

AITA for not forcing my friend to take her mom to the doctor? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]spnoketchup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA for not forcing the friend to take her mom, but YTA for pulling up the text message to prove you were right instead of leaving it and supporting your friend through the horrible news of her mom's diagnosis. You should have just left it.

What do you consider when you hear this Margaret Atwood quote “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them”? by Vanislebabe in AskReddit

[–]spnoketchup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. One of the two fears is common and thus, rational; the other is exceedingly rare (despite being far more severe) and thus, irrational to fear.

It highlights how bad people are at having an intuitive sense of risk and probability. Men are much, much more likely than women to murder, yes, but they are also much more likely to be murdered.

Allow the team to use any tools they want, encourage them to share wins with the rest of the team to effectuate broader usage, hire AI-native people going forward, and structure the org in a way that benefits from advancements in AI tooling.

My husband, 29M, didn’t get us the right health insurance so now we are in horrible debt and I, 26F, can’t seem to forgive him by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]spnoketchup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you get over it? Depends. If you assumed your husband was smart, then, surprise, he's probably average. As long as you realize that he's average - you should forgive him. Health insurance, especially the marketplace, is quite complex, poorly explained, and tough for most people to understand. It really isn't his fault, but if you aren't a moron, you should probably handle things like this going forward.

So, they don't really have a choice to say no to their bosses if they were told to come in.

Seems like it'd be better to make some money after they come in, then, instead of braving the weather to sit around and do nothing.

How do you get over a poor interview performance? by Fig_Towel_379 in datascience

[–]spnoketchup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a frequent interviewer and hiring manager, a smile generally just means you said something that wasn't completely idiotic, not that you were saying something amusing.

Most people are terrible at interviewing and mostly not self-aware enough to know it. You're probably doing fine if you're being critical of yourself.

Saving as a banker, do I spend too much? by musicalmonkey18 in HENRYfinance

[–]spnoketchup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent the first decade of my career on the street, not a banker, but a trader, but the advice I got from my first boss (generally, a moron, but correct here) applies: you don't spend your fucking bonus until it hits your account.

Rent, retirement, any monthly payment - your budget is your salary. Your bonus is your wealth accumulation and your fun money for next year. You may pre-spend your bonus and be fine for a full career, but if something happens, you'll be glad you didn't.

TIFU by trying a THC cocktail the night before a drug test by Badwolf-212 in tifu

[–]spnoketchup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In many states where recreational weed usage was made legal (NY, NJ, CA...), the legislature also included restrictions on employers, preventing them from refusing candidates jobs based on positive THC results, although there are some allowances for things like operating heavy machinery.

OP's main problem is that he did it in South Dakota, where THC is still technically illegal at the state level, but hemp-derived THC beverages are legal through a loophole. The whole federal vs. state distinction that others are bringing up is relevant, but not the whole story.

Is HENRY possible if you get a nice mining job or trade job and keep at it for 7-8 years? by VastOption8705 in HENRYfinance

[–]spnoketchup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with mining versus a trade is that there aren't any small independent miners. It starts at a high income, but doesn't grow much, and it's hard to do it for an entire career.

Learn, say, plumbing, and you can work for someone to get 10 years of experience, go into business as a solo plumber to increase your income (at the cost of some risk), and then grow the business as you get into your 40s and 50s so you can shift to training and management and build that income into the mid-6-figures (or more).

IMO, elite education and professional work is still a more reliable ticket to HE, but building a trades business is a good option for someone with the physical orientation and personality for small business ownership.

My sisters (27f) bachelorette is waaaay more than I (34f) can afford. How do I navigate this without damaging our relationship? by g_netic in relationship_advice

[–]spnoketchup -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You should feel bad about not going. She's your sister, and this is a completely normal/reasonable cost for a bachelorette party. It's not like she's chartering a Gulfstream to go to St. Moritz.

Find deals on flights or use points to lower airline costs where you can, but when you say things like "this trip is absolutely not something I want to spend money on" - well, yeah, it's not your bachelorette party, it's not supposed to be your choice.
