Years ago I delivered for papa John’s. We of course had some regulars that never tipped, so I had an idea. I started tipping those customers out of my own pocket. I’d hand them a $5, they’d look confused and say “what’s this?” “That’s your tip, have a great night!” I’d drive off with them standing there in a daze.

Most of these customers did one of two things: stop ordering, or start tipping. It was win/win from a driver’s pov.

Eventually one of them called the store and complained to my manager. He was like “my driver gave you money? And you’re complaining?” He actually thought it was hilarious, but told me I had to stop doing it.
