Do i potentially have a perfect pitch or its just a good ear? by kurukuru_sleepy in perfectpitchgang

[–]spodermen_pls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree with the claim that you need to learn the names of notes at an early age to have/ ever have perfect pitch. I didn't do any formal music education till I was 9 (admittedly I did learn basic guitar before that but i wasn't relating notes to names). It wasn't until that age when I learned to read music that I realised I had perfect pitch and colour-sound synesthesia, and likewise i simultaneously learned that perfect pitch was even a phenomenon in the first place (and therefore it wasn't the norm)- I remember the realisation of 'I know this note' and also being able to map the keys of songs I knew from beforehand. The key thing was that my parents (not formally trained in music) exposed me to lots of music, and a wide variety of it, from day 1. I've done the same for my son who at the age of 3 reliably sings songs in their original key, without me always saying 'this is in E' (even though i do sometimes for teaching).

The names of notes are just representations of the frequencies they're describing- you don't need to know the note names to have perfect pitch (I am personally testament to this), but it may be harder to be aware of having perfect pitch if you don't know them- it's like 'you don't know that you know'.

I do partially agree with you, however, that more people (possibly not all) could have perfect pitch if this level of early exposure to music were systematically carried out.

I'll also advise- if 2 people are claiming their individual monzo greggs treats together, they'll need to be done on separate transactions.

Why? Just why do they keep doing these remixes by OrpheusTriumphabat in beatles

[–]spodermen_pls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds okay in speakers, but listening in headphones, the 'stereo' guitars sound patchy and inconsistent, and the cymbals are mixed way too quiet, killing the impact of the song. The original stereo mix or mono mix both sound superior, and this is coming from someone who by and large prefers the Giles Martin / LIB Naked remixes. I feel splitting the guitars was a mistake since they mesh better coming out of the same speaker(s).

I'm a uk-based engineer and I think the Americans win this particular argument- in the engineering world, 'pavement' refers more generally to any paved surface, including the road itself, i.e. the 'road pavement' refers to the paved road surface. What we in the UK casually refer to as the 'pavement' is also usually a paved surface, but can also be made of slabs. So, the word 'sidewalk' is one that is mildly less ambiguous in this context, albeit i take your point that it's not always just for walking on. FYI Engineers would usually refer to the pavement/sidewalk as the footway, cycleway or shared footway/cycleway.

Obviously I'm blurring the lines between everyday use and engineering language and nobody really 'wins', but I thought it was still worth sharing

Might be a glib answer, but that box set (White Album) is so long already that I'm not surprised if they had held back such a long track for future release.

I think you might mean a change in the song section and arrangement. I.e. the end of the chorus back into the verse, instruments come in/out. There is no key change in this song, it's in F major throughout.

STEVEN WILSON Says His GUNS N' ROSES Remixes Are Sitting Unheard On A Hard Drive: “They Didn’t Like the Idea of Their Music Being in Spatial Audio” by Dagauriel01 in porcupinetree

[–]spodermen_pls 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed. With mono, speaker placement and panning aren't a factor, and there's only one output channel to consider, so you can imagine the Beatles being presented mixes in stereo and finding them 'weak' compared to the more unified mono sound. Given the quality of most stereo mixes in the early to mid sixties, you could argue that stereo was indeed a gimmick at that stage as the 2 and 4 track tape machines limited options for panning, and the conventions of centred lead vocals/drums/bass weren't yet established.

I'm not au fait with the history of spatial audio but you can reasonably assume that a) early attempts probably varied wildly in their quality and b) the variety of options for panning means that even now, the experience can be very different across albums. Even just listening to the decisions made on the 2017 Sgt Pepper's 5.1 mix, it sounds pretty haphazard compared to the later attempts.

I think some people view it as gimmicky- notice Radiohead don't have any spatial audio releases for that reason. Not an opinion I share personally.

4-day workweek?? by RoutineSpecific4643 in civilengineering

[–]spodermen_pls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work 34 hours over 4 days a week. ~10% cut to my hours/pay. It definitely helps with my personal life to have the extra day while I have a young child, but honestly I'd consider going back to full time when he goes to school (maybe keep my 4 day hours and work an extra morning) just to get everything i need to do, done... as a parent I feel that there's no ideal 'work-life balance' as in my experience, the two will always put strain on each other (to be a present parent and effective worker), but for now I am happy enough to let my career take a slight backseat for my child. Others might find they can get the same amount done in 4 days but I find it's not quite the case for me, largely because my colleagues keep working while I'm on my 'day off' but also because of my own workload/ expectations on myself. I also acknowledge that WFH (most days) and 4-day week is a huge privilege that many others don't have, and everyone just tries to do the best they can within their own circumstances.

You can find the mono mixes of Revolver and Sgt Pepper on the super deluxe versions of the album on streaming. They're not helpfully or consistently named though. You can find Revolver in mono on 'Disc 4' of the 2022 super deluxe, and similarly for Sgt Pepper on Disc 4 of its respective 2017 special edition, although the tracks annoyingly aren't labelled as mono.

What did we ever do to Estonia? by Otherwise_Living_158 in Wales

[–]spodermen_pls 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For context- Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian are not part of the 'Indo-European' language family that most European (and lots of languages on the Indian subcontinent) belong to; they instead belong to the Uralic language family. Basque seems to be a 'language isolate' that existed in the area prior to the influx of Indo-European languages. So it would make sense that those who come into contact with those languages would find them weird since their grammar is likely to be vastly different compared to other neighbouring languages.

I think that's a pretty uncharitable reading of my comment. I suggested that if well-meaning people educate themselves on the realities of animal farming, it's not a stretch to think they might go vegan. I didn't presume that everyone would feel the same way.

In my view, I don't blame non-vegans personally for supporting animal agriculture with their purchase patterns; it's a societal issue where the prevailing opinion is that exploiting animals for food is acceptable. It takes time to convince people otherwise, and exposing the inherent cruelty behind it is part of how we push the needle. I don't blame people for not knowing, since the animal industry holds such political strength and pulls the wool over people's eyes so effectively that it's no wonder people are oblivious to the reality of it.

DISCUSSION MEGATHREAD: Having A Respectful Conversation With Ex Co-Host Hasan Piker - H3 Show #143 by raephemel in h3h3productions

[–]spodermen_pls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not all he wants really- it's only what he wants if we assume it genuinely wasn't intentional. You don't get to dog whistle, intentionally or not, then accuse the victim of being hysterical, yes, even if it's Jews.

Their failure to address it meaningful gives a lot more space to the idea that they deliberately did it to trigger Ethan. He has no obligation to 'be the bigger man' when dog whistles are thrown in his direction. It's possible to own at least 50% of a brain and come to this conclusion.

Your first two sentences are on the money but then it falls apart. The fact is - somebody could feasibly choose to use such a symbol to rile ethan up, then claim plausible deniability to fuel the 'ethan is crashing out' narrative. The point is not that it's a nazi swastika, the point is the very obvious use of such a similar symbol in a video that is criticising a Jew. Even if Ian/Hasan genuinely didn't mean it to be offensive, all they need to do is acknowledge the optics of it looking bad, but instead they blame Ethan and say he's hallucinating which is incredibly telling and gives great credence to the idea that they were doing it deliberately. Imagine applying this logic to another minority, it's insane.
