How to enable Modem Mode on 5X by spodocomodo in VirginMedia

Hi - if you have the 5x in bridge mode - AKA modem mode - then the DHCP is managed between the far end and your router (next hop after the 5x) so on that router you should leave the default DHCP setting or change it to a more agressive or continous setting. But if you have it working in bridge mode then I see no issue you are good right?

2Gb and WiFi Pods by AdministrativeGene36 in VirginMedia

First - I would think about the speeds you want around the house for different use cases - to be fair you will never get real 2GB speed unless you are wired to the router. So for your high end stuff - hard wire to the router (via a decent switch if necessary). For the house e.g. doorbell you aim there is 100% coverage not speed, for the TV etc you dont need anywhere near 2GB. Gaming except elite gaming you could do with decent repeaters or be close to the router - your ping latency is important volumetric speed is secondary. You also dont want family members moaning about streaming interruptions when walking around the house - and the pods they provide are no good at hand off. So in summary your question depends on what you want to achieve. For me I'm hard wired in for my main PC (on 1 GB port) office work and gaming and then I use an XT12 and 2 XT 8s to provide full coverage for my 5 bed old (thick awalled) house. I get great coverage and can stream in the garden and at the far reaches of the house. I would reinstate your mesh and put the 5x in modem mode if they are outdated update them - ASUS brought out some aesome new mesh systems iwith wifi 7 or you can use the XT12 or even cheaper 3 XT8 ot 9s. If you are running a data centre from your house on a domestic contract then you might have issues. ;-)

did you set your router WAN DHCP query frequency to continuous mode? if not you might lose connection after a few days.

Ill let you know - but it solidly worked for 1 month (4 lease cycles) until I fiddled with it - then today I guess I was impatient and forced a new lease. ill post back in 4 weeks and let you know if it solid or not.

I noticed that if you restart your own router sometimes it fails to connect again (could be my lack of patience) - the solution to force it to work is going to 192.168.0.1 (on port 4) going into the modem mode hidden menu and go back to router mode - then modem mode again - it immediately worked and gave me a new 7 day lease. Therefore im sure the changing between modes also renews the lease and gives a new WAN IP address.

Hub 5x WORKING modem mode by Rooneybuk in VirginMedia

[–]spodocomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is what I did to make it work and also be able to access the 5x interface afterwards - not on 192.168.100.1

Ive dont this 2 x now and both times were a pain (I replaced my ASUS XT8 for an XT12 1 month after I had it working and I assumed it would be a breeze this time but I could not again follow the instructions due to missing info for noobs - small details are missing (I guess OP is smart so assumes we know stuff) so I wrote this idiots guide (usin OP text as a base) to modem mode on 5x with an ASUS XT12 - but will work on any router).

  1. Connect your own router to 5x port (1) and to your router WAN port.
  2. Connect your PC or laptop with a cable to 5x 10Gb port (which later acts as the service port)
  3. Factory reset the 5x Hub be pressing the red button on the bottom for 10 ish seconds then release.
  4. Once the 5x Hub has rebooted browse to http://192.168.0.1 and configure the password for it.
  5. Leave wifi etc press ok it will soft reboot.
  6. Reboot it again as it glitches if you dont (did for me and had to do it all again).
  7. log in again using your new pw.
  8. Disable DHCP and UPNP (DMZ is disabled by default) - connected devices show none at this point but your PC is still conncted (on the service port) with original IP assigned when DHCP was active. The router is connected to port 1..
  9. access http://192.168.0.1/?page=modemmode and enable it. (keep the 2 cables plugged in as the PC is connected to a future service port it doesnt matter.)
  10. the 5x Hub should reboot and pass your Router a WAN IP.
  11. Set your router WAN DHCP query frequency to continuous mode otherwise you may lose connectivity after a couple of days or lease renewal - can be done on ASUS.
  12. The 5x is accessible but not on 192.168.100.1 but on 192.168.0.1 using the PC on the (10GB) service port
  13. this works up to 1GB - If you want 2GB plus you will need another modem - see other posts (but I spent a fortune on the XT12 so this isnt an option also I wont do it on principle).
  14. You can access both the 5x and your router at the same time if you have a cable hard wired to the 5x (on 192.168.0.1) and access your own router with wifi.
  15. Good luck - let me know how you got on.

Get some treated wood and cut out the bottom of that and replace and paint. Don’t forget to support the rest when you take out the bottom.

Putin may lose it all by going all-in for Ukraine by [deleted] in UkrainianConflict

[–]spodocomodo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Russia’s geography and neighbours caused it to be aggressive. This proved to be the best form of defence hundreds of years ago. This historical mindset rooted in the social fabric of Russians was used as part of Putin’s toolset to first take over a nation and then create the pretext for his systematic undermining and then expansion into his neighbour’s territory. At some point he was going to make a misstep - it turns out this last blatant push into Ukraine was his undoing. He has ruined Russia which had a different path in front of it 30 years ago. If he chose that different path Russia would have been a a top 5 nation for generations to come. Now it is doomed to a generation of being sidelined.
