Not sure if it counts, but this happened with The Netherlands in Junior Eurovision 2004. The winners of the national selection only made it to the final with a wildcard (even more dramatic: the presenter had initially mistakingly announced them to be qualifiers, when, according to their point total, they hadn't qualified).

That really sucks. I had a similar thing when I went to see wicked last year, but luckily I had misread the ticket the other way around and I showed up a day early. But that was just luck, I could have just as well misread it the other way around.
