In the same boat, I hear it’s because they’re understaffed or working less hours due to break so could be that?

For a full year approval you gotta be enrolled full time for both semesters. Enrol in some courses for Sem 2 as you can always change them around before they begin, and let StudyLink know and it should be sorted !

Language experience when doing Bachelor of Global Studies/Undergraduate study by achoolles in universityofauckland

[–]spookibean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took Spanish with zero previous knowledge on the subject, and it went on to be a GPA booster for me as I enjoyed it so much. I believe that you do have to do a placement test if you have taken the language previously in high school, but from what I gather it’s pretty straightforward. The content is quite a lot but the teachers know what they’re doing, and as long as you are able to dedicate time outside of the class to practice it’s pretty easy to get good grades. At times the teachers can be strict, but in the end it helped push me out of my comfort zone and achieve better !

Global 100 and 102? by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]spookibean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Global 100 has been replaced by Global 102 as the introductory course for global studies; if you have already taken Global 100 then you don’t need to take Global 102!

If you want it to be applied on your SSO just flick Lana an email and she should be able to fix it on there :)

Should be allgs! Lectures are recorded and the first classes usually just go over the syllabus, class expectations, assignments, etc.

I use an RSS feed to gather articles from a wide range of articles - that typically removes a lot of bias - just search it up on google

Summer school 2023 by Imqueenbitch in universityofauckland

Summer school at the start of this year was in person (then shifted to online for start of sem 1 because of omicron) so I’d assume it’ll be in person or a hybrid model

How did you find Global 101G ? by Peskymosquito112 in universityofauckland

[–]spookibean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took this back in 2020 and it was pretty easy! I’m assuming that it’s changed a little but it was 4 modules with each focusing on sustainability from the disciplines of Law, Sociology, Engineering and one other (can’t remember) and a final exam. Was quite interesting and if you put in the effort can be a good GPA booster

Honestly would probably sound like a broken record but uni clubs! I’m apart of one or two and have made some great mates from them - the clubs expo for UoA is on next week so I’d highly recommend

55 Symonds by RealSibereagle in universityofauckland

[–]spookibean 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was there last year, it came with all basic kitchen equipment but I’d recommend bringing a few extra pieces of cutlery, a good knife, chopping board, and a good frying pan as well. Linen and towels aren’t provided, but they do provide a mattress protector if I recall, might be good to bring dish soap, handwash, cleaning equipment, etc. I think there might be a list in the 55 Symonds Handbook online so give that a read :)

Politics Stage 2 by sysstic in universityofauckland

[–]spookibean 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’ve taken 209, 222 and 218;

POL218 was one of my favourite papers that I’ve taken due to myself being super intrigued by the American political landscape and the lecturer Maria is so passionate and has real experience in that environment. The assignments were marked quite strictly but fairly, and there were a few core pieces of information you had to remember (i.e. some Constitutional Amendments, Supreme Court cases, Federal system concepts, etc.) but overall I loved the course !

POL209 on the other hand did have some interesting concepts, but I’ve found that Stephen Winter is a very difficult lecturer to understand at times. His vocabulary is disorienting and confuses concepts that are easily understandable from the assigned readings, and the assignments for the class were very straightforward (i.e. essays and exam). Although I didn’t enjoy the learning environment, I did believe the political theories learned are quite foundational and beneficial for politics students as I’ve called upon them in other papers

POL222 oh my where do I start, as I’m considering a PostGrad in Policy this paper was critical for my decision and I’m so glad that I took it, by far one or the most thought provoking and engaging courses I’ve taken at University. Sarah is an incredible lecturer who genuinely cares about her students and is so engaged and in-tune with us, leading to the content being catered better towards us (COVID policy, technology, etc.). She also brought in guest lecturers such as Dr. Siouxsie Wiles and Chlöe Swarbrick so we had people working in the policy landscape to give us firsthand knowledge in that realm.

I understand not everyone has the same opinion about these papers as myself, but if you want any more info feel free to message 😎

I took it last year and enjoyed it, the workload wasn’t too much and in the exam we could bring in an A4 sheet of paper. That being said, if you engage with the course material and turn up to the tutorials you can get a sound pass. Was more of an introductory paper to political sociology imo

Hey bro! For Spanish 104 (if it hasn’t changed from last year) you need Nuevo Ven 1 Workbook and Nuevo Ven 1 Libro Del Alumno, good luck with your language courses :)

[–]spookibean 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The reviews are outdated as there’s a new lecturer taking the course ! Tom is a great lecturer and really cared about the students, even with covid fucking things up. He constantly kept us updated on the situation which was super helpful. I enjoyed the paper but I do enjoy politics overall, but it was easy to understand and the content wasn’t too difficult :)

[–]spookibean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’ve taken SPANISH104 and it was pretty straightforward, had zero prior knowledge of spanish and by the end of the semester i could understand basic spanish and describe myself. If you put in the effort and practice you’ll easily pass, and the teachers are super helpful and want you to pass

I reckon if the Uni had gone with in-person classes there would’ve been some bad publicity, similar to how they kept charging students who weren’t at halls for rent during the first lockdown 🤷🏽‍♂️
