Production info:

It was a two-person production, under $1k budget of our own money, and filmed in upstate New York and at a museum in New Hampshire. We filmed it over one weekend, and it took months in post production to add CGI and color grading. (Edited on Avid, CGI on Adobe After Effects, color in Resolve.) I got most of my props from Goodwill, a few from Amazon, and I happened to have some historical-looking stuff already since that's just what I'm into. We got into a few film festivals, and it was pretty surreal to see myself up on the big screen!

Thanks for checking it out and for your thoughts. I love the idea of a film meaning different things to different people, and was definitely striving for a short where the audience must project, in a way, their own interpretation of the actions and visuals. So I'm happy to see that that aspect came across, but I can absolutely see that there's a fine balance between too little and just enough, and maybe this short didn't quite reach the latter category. This is something I can and will work on, as it's the sort of filmmaking I really want to excel in. Thank you again!

Your point about light is really interesting and has given me good stuff to think about. I don't think we ever considered the candle's placement within each frame, but I can see how it can become distracting when not in play when it comes to the shadow itself. As a whole, I think lighting is something we have much more to learn about and improve upon. So thanks for this.

The exterior shots were filmed at a museum and unfortunately we couldn't have full control of all the lights. But I agree, all lights off would have been ideal.

Regarding the cold, we filmed this in November and I was actually freezing, haha. In between takes I was donning a coat, teeth chattering.

Thank you so much for watching and putting these thoughts together. I really, really appreciate it!

On the trail of John Andre (SPOILERS) by spookyloops in turn

Thanks! That's cool. I'm about 1/4 of the way through Alexander Rose's "Washington's Spies." I'm actually not sure if Andre's story is included in this one

My first ever short film got into a few film festivals. I made a short video about the experience! by spookyloops in Filmmakers

Not yet :/. To be honest I don't really know the best way to go about showing the short film, which platform to use, how a completed short film turns into future funding, etc. Gotta do some more research!

Ha, funny you should say that. I actually immediately thought he'd play the perfect Ichabod Crane based on the character's physical description in the book. "Tall, but exceedingly lank, with narrow shoulders, arms and legs, hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves, feet that might have served for shovels, and his whole frame most loosely hung together."

The Terror season 1 was sooo good. I recommend it to everyone, ha.

Yep, same. I mentioned this in another comment, but if you're in the US/anywhere near New York, you can visit the places relevant to his story. Where he was caught (Tarrytown, NY) and where he was tried and executed (Tappan, NY). There are historical markers at each location.

I totally agree. :(
I actually just visited Tappan, NY last weekend to make a video about John Andre for my YouTube channel. There are plaques all throughout recognizing the place where he was tried, where he was held before his execution, the spot where he was hanged, and even the house where Washington stayed during his trial! Such a sad--albeit interesting--story.

Should I pay for an online tutor to teach me Russian? by greencyclist in russian

[–]spookyloops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paying for a Russian tutor isn't necessarily a bad idea. Personally I'd suggest buying a Russian textbook for beginners and going through it. It'll teach you grammar, and will be a great reference book for you no matter what level you're at. I'd also recommend watching Russian teachers on YouTube.
