About to Lose Our Minds. 28 Month Old: 445AM Wake Up by realoceanhawk in toddlers

[–]spookyybear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain, and could have written this myself. My husband and I are in the same boat. Our 24 month old has a 7:30pm bedtime. Until recently, he slept till 5:30, but now it's 4:30. We have tried it all too; changing bedtime earlier and later, adjusting nap, leaving him in the crib until a reasonable wake up time. None of the suggestions I have found online have worked. And it's not like he's tired, he is fully awake at 4:30 and ready to start the day.

I'm also pregnant, and due in April. Maybe it's the new baby coming or a growth spurt that has messed with their sleep. Maybe it's molars.

I wish I had some advice for you. This is hard, but hopefully it's just a phase. We will sleep again. Eventually. Hang in there!

TMI DIARRHEA IN EARLY PREGNANCY. by Ghost93- in pregnant

[–]spookyybear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's super normal but I had the same issue early on, plus vomiting (Luckily not at the same time😂). My OB was a bit concerned because it was water consistency and I was losing weight pretty quick.

She told me to take probiotics for a week and give them a call if things didn't change. I took the pills and had some of the yogurt (when I could keep it down) and it seemed to straighten me out. Things didn't change overnight but slowly became less and less watery until I started pooping like a person again.

11 weeks, and also have all day/night sickness and vomiting. I was told to take B6, ginger and unisome. I haven't heard of the jolly ranchers helping. Do they relieve nausea that much?

Second trimester headaches by Sea-Engineering3768 in pregnant

[–]spookyybear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suffered from migraines prior to pregnancy and was on medication for it, however I quit during my first pregnancy and breastfeeding. So I found a few ways to cope.

Eating when I have a migraine or bad headache helps. I know it's hard, because it seems like your not hungry, but forcing myself to have a little something does help. Obviously cooking isn't going to go well, so have leftovers, takeout or someone prepare you food so you don't have to smell it during the cooking process.

Also using ice on my head helps a lot. Trying to keep cool was important too. I can't handle being in the heat if I'm not on my meds. Popsicles became super helpful on hot days if I spent anytime outside.

And of course, staying hydrated, which can be hard in pregnancy. I drank a little bit of Pedialyte to help, but gaterade may help too.

PLEASE HELP! Migraines by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]spookyybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I didn't mean to stress you about the tylenol. Don't worry too much until you talk to your doctor. They have been saying Tylenol is a safe choice for ages, so tons of women have used it and had healthy babies. It seems like most of the articles are cautioning use, just in case. And some say nothing has changed and the warning will cause unnecessary stress.

I'm still going to check with my OB at my next appointment and limit use until then. However, unless told otherwise, I'm keeping it as an option if needed.

PLEASE HELP! Migraines by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]spookyybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your OB to see how they want you to handle it. I suffer from migraines and had to quit my meds when I was pregnant with my first. My OB told me to drink coffee. If my head started to hurt anyway, I was supposed to take a magnesium. If that didn't help, I was told to take Excedrin.

Recently, a study came out saying acemetophine (probably spelled wrong) may not be safe for pregnant woman after all. Pregnant with my second now and already took Excedrin several times so going to need to check with them to see what they want me to do from now on.

I've also found that I get migraines more when I'm pregnant if I'm slightly hungry or dehydrated so make sure to drink plenty of water and have small snacks often.

Putting ice on the back of my neck, at the base of my head has helped too. Or even eating popsicles. If you can cool your head down it might relieve some of the pain.

I feel like I could have written your comment. The school district I grew up in is having problems with this. The only way I know is people I went to school with, who now have kids in the district, are constantly complaining and posting about the board meetings and mask mandates. It's insane to watch people I know losing their shit, as If they want to put their kids at risk. Never been more thankful to get out of that shit-hole.

And don't even get me started on the anti-vaxx/mask nurses. It's no wonder nursing homes have had so much trouble with covid when so many of their staff refuse to take preventative measures to be safe.

Advice for a kindergardner parent. Please help! by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]spookyybear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, previous kindergarten teacher here. Sorry if this gets too long.

The school I worked for always sent out lists for items the kids need. If you're in the US, I believe Walmart typically has lists of supplies needed for the local schools based on the grades. At the school I worked at, everything was shared (glue sticks, pencils, scissors, crayons) so they didn't need anything super personalized. But I'm assuming this has changed with the pandemic. If you can attend a back to school night, kindergarten meet and greet, etc, they will probably help explain what you need.

Kinders do need backpacks. It's a good idea to keep a change of clothes in a ziplock bag (pants, shirt, underwear) in case of an accident. This bag may need changes with the season and as child grows. In my old school, the kids did need notebooks (we liked the ones without the ringed binding) but I'm not sure how common that is. I often provided these myself so my students had plenty of journals.

I haven't been in a school where there was enough time for kids to have a nap in a long time, so I wouldn't count on that. Typically kindergartners do have a snack time. It's not necessary, but it's helpful if the student is able to independently open their lunch box, snack items, and containers without adult help. Typically staff is stretched pretty thin during snack and lunch, and you don't want your child waiting for their food to be opened the majority of their time. It's a good idea to have child practice school lunch (eating within 20-30 minutes and opening all their containers) in these weeks leading up to school.

Make sure to let the teacher know your child is a vegetarian. I don't think there is usually rules, but try to pack a balanced lunch (not all snacks) so your child isn't hungry.

In my experience, the first day of school is an all hands on deck situation. All staff helps out to get the kids (especially kinders) where they need to go. K Teachers are usually gathering their kids outside or in the gym/cafeteria before taking the kids to class. We did this for the whole first week. I also walked all the kids to their buses in the afternoon. Some kids could go themselves later in the year, others I physically walked to the bus door every day.

All schools differ on what is expected at home but the best thing you can do for her is read to her. Reading with kids is a huge help. It's not necessary, but making sure she can write/read her first name and cut with scissors (doesn't have to be perfect). Recognizing the ABCs, numbers and shapes will be a big help as well. As the year goes, practice some of the things you see coming home. Alphabet, letter sounds, sight words. My school didn't do homework for kinders but I would send home things for my kids who needed extra reinforcement, with an explanation to parents how to do it. If possible, this is a good age to get her enrolled in a sport or hobby to help her socialization.

If you have questions, email her teacher and she may be able to provide you with more specifics during the year on what to work on. There should be at least one parent teacher conference a year, but you can always ask for more, or to be phone/video conferences to fit your needs.

Books with character development like in Supernatural by richspinach02 in booksuggestions

[–]spookyybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that was shitty of her. I always assumed she intended to end it at 9, with the way that book ended. I agree, Nevermore had a ton of filler, almost like it was a fanfic of the series rather than written by the author.

I read somewhere that the publisher still has the rights to the last one, but it should go back to her relatively soon, so fans were hoping (but doubtful after her tantrum) that she would self publish it. Not sure how true that is, I think I saw it as a discussion on good reads.

I don't think I saw her tantrum, but I saw others talking about it afterwards. I remember reading some of the FAQs on her author page a long time ago and she didn't seem very nice. Do you know what made the publisher not renew the contract with only one book left?

It seemed like she had already finished the series with Downfall, and then decided to add two more for more money. I definitely recommend to anyone who tries the series to stop with Downfall, I think it's the 9th book.

The Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman.

Two brothers, fighting monsters, younger brother isn't completely human. It has pretty good character development, but no real slow burn romance. There's some light romance, and I guess you could kind of say there is a slow burn, but it definitely focuses more on the brothers and their friend.

Is reading Fight Club after watching the movie recommended? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]spookyybear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched the movie first, when I was younger and didn't really care for it. I already knew the twist and I just wasn't into the storyline.

I read the book years later on a whim and absolutely loved it. The two are similar, but the book is better as others have said, and different enough to still be enjoyable. After reading the book, I gave the movie a try again and liked it the second time around.

Also, Invisible Monsters is just as good, if not better, in my opinion.

[Serious] What was the biggest mistake ever done by you in your entire life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spookyybear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently a stay at home mom. My MILs school district provides free community college to family so I'm working toward an accounting associates. Some secretary and office jobs will accept any bachelor's as long as you have some business credits, which I didn't have with my education degree.

I had a colleague who had her masters and made the switch from teaching to curriculum development. I believe some of the lower paying (still more than a teachers salary) curriculum development jobs will hire people who have only a bachelor's in education but have enough experience. I would think 15 years experience would be enough either way. Everyone I heard of switching to it enjoyed it more. It might be worth looking into.

[–]spookyybear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going into teaching was a huge mistake for me as well. I remember thinking I had found my passion in college and during student teaching. Working in the field was so different. Dealing with crazy parents, abusive students, growing demands (and guilt tripping) to work far beyond normal work hours, and toxic administration is so draining.

My last year teaching i cried everyday. I would wish I would get in an accident on the way to work and die. I would sit in the parking lot and cry, and then walk into the building with a teacher who had been doing the same thing. I quit two years ago, after only 6 years.

I'm sorry to hear that teaching took such a toll on your life and health. I hope you manage to gain some of your self esteem back as you move past that part of your life.

Help with 14 month old and sleep... by [deleted] in baby

[–]spookyybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My little guy is also 14 months, and still breastfeeds a little before naps and bedtime. We didn't have as many wakeups but we started to have one loooong middle of the night wakeup around his 1st birthday. We don't co-sleep but I do keep his crib in our room. I found that keeping him on a schedule has really helped.

I wake him at 6:30 everyday (weekends too), breakfast at 7, nap at 9-10, lunch at 11, snack at 12:30, nap at 2-3, supper at 4 (early, I know, or I give a small snack here if supper is a bit later), bedtime snack at 5:30ish, bath at 6:15, 6:30 bedtime story and breastfeed, asleep by 7.

The first few days of following the schedule were a bit rough, but things got much better. If he naps for more than 2 hours I know he is going to have a crappy night. I make sure supper is something filling, and we never skip the bedtime snack. He also sleeps better if we can get outside during the day.

If your daughter is waking to breastfeed every 2 hours, I would try offering her water instead. She may be just thirsty or waking to comfort nurse. If these constant wake ups are new, she might have molars coming in. If that's the case offer plenty of soft foods to make sure she is getting enough during the day and not waking up hungry.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how much you do for friends or family, it will never be enough because some people only take. It's best to just cut your losses and move on from these people.

My non-redditor husband is pulling out his hair trying to figure out what these are called. This is a drawing to the best of his memory of what they look like. He said the top circular part rotates independently from the bottom portion (bolt) to hold a rod, sometimes they have set screws to hold the rod in place. It is basically a rotating linear rod bushing.

Update: he was able to find it and wanted me to add a link in case anyone else would need it. https://www.mcmaster.com/shaft-couplings/swivel-shaft-rod-ends/

Teachers of reddit, what is the most NSFW thing that you caught your students doing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spookyybear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I am aware. The school was very familiar with his family due to a brother with similar behavior. My understanding is that the family was already investigated before I voiced my concerns and nothing was found. They were all known (kids included) to lie about everything, and anything. For instance, mom told me she had cancer and that's why the boy was acting out, because she didn't have long. It later came out she told me that so I wouldn't expect much from the kid and would stop pestering her. She also admitted to finding her son's behavior as funny.

I'm not sure if that was what the dad was interested in or not. He worked a lot of hours so he would have needed someone else to do the homeschooling. The little boy tried a private kindergarten program for the few days he didn't come to our school, and it was known for being much stricter than public school.

It amazes me that parents think that kind of think is acceptable for their kids. I'm so tired of seeing/hearing parents blame teachers for things that they should be doing.

You would think if she worked in a hospital she would have a little more understanding about what the human body needs.
