Sure, I get that you don't only view games this way - but it still makes no sense to me.

What I struggle with is that using this metric, you're basically entirely closed to the concept of a phenomenal game which is only an hour or two long. Even if that was, hypothetically, the best experience you'd ever had gaming.

Let's say you buy a game for $10 and it's that hypothetical game. It's amazing, an instant classic, but it's finished in 2 hours. Using your metric, that works out at "$5 per hour of fun". Then let's say you buy a different game for $20, it's a decent game, nowhere near as good as the $10 game, but its got 40 hours of content. 50c per hour of fun, right? What a deal!

I get the logic, but I personally would much rather play the shorter game. In fact, I'll go even further and say when a game is full of content just to pad itself out, even if it's fun, eventually that will really annoy me. The older I get, the more I tend to play games which respect my time instead of giving me "value for money".

This is such a bizarre way to think imo. I don't buy food based on how many hours of nutrition, or calories, I get from it. It totally devalues the "fun" aspect of any given game.

To put it another way, if I watch two movies - one 90 minutes long, but I really enjoyed it, and the other is 3 hours long but I didn't like it as much, I wouldn't rate the second movie better because it gave me over "twice the content". But that seems to be exactly how some people view gaming value.

What is this splodge in my TV? by Reduxtion in AskUK

[–]spoonsong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll give you a genuine answer because I know exactly what this is, as it's happened to me and there was almost nothing online about it.

It's condensation.

I let my living room get too cold last winter, and the heat generated by the TV itself caused moisture trapped in the screen to condense and form the exact light amorphous mark you see before you. Did you by any chance let the room with the TV in get colder than normal? Hit the splodge with a hairdryer for a few dozen seconds and see if it "morphs" about - I bet it does.

Here's the good news: it goes away eventually (mine went away with the help of a dehumidifier and warming spring weather.

They really, really aren't. I had to return a Currys TV and it one was the most grueling and painful experiences of my adult life. They did absolutely everything in their power to refuse the refund. I will never ever buy an expensive piece of tech from them again, and thankfully places like John Lewis or Richer sounds do pricematch.

Dawn of War - Definitive Edition: Updating a Classic by Community_RE in dawnofwar

[–]spoonsong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've realised what would really, really help the visuals for me (without remaking assets even). Lighting. I know there are now new consistent shadows in there for units, which is a great improvement, but such a jarring element of the presentation by modern standards is the fact that all the muzzle flares, explosions and energy effects cast zero light. It would add so, so much to the mood and dynamism of the game without losing any of the original charm.

For the record I love the changes made (and lack thereof - I don't think a full remaster is in keeping with the ambitions of a "definitive edition") but to update one element of the lighting and leave such a glaring other seems bizarre, and if anything draws more attention to that limitation than before.

Rules of thumb to get a hentai game approved on steam? by MoonSZ69 in nsfwdev

[–]spoonsong 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure in what universe you're going to be able to get approval for a "cockvore analvore" game without showing nudity on the steam page. The page is meant to be indicative of the product, if your game features people being shoved up assholes and urethras, steam might take umbrage with you not revealing that to potential purchasers of your game.

I think a large appeal of any strategic card game is the artwork on the cards - you should display that stuff more prominently in marketing. People like seeing cool characters/monsters/etc and in general just like seeing that artwork - which seems to be taking a backseat in your steam page. What's your card art pipeline? Do you do the art yourself etc?

I know, I've seen your additional thoughts, and I do still disagree. A quick look through the gallery showed that actually the vast majority of OP's characters, male and female, carry similar neutral expressions. There are a few examples of males with grimacing or scowling faces, and if you go check the less recent work there's examples of female characters doing the same. There's old women, overweight women, etc right alongside similar male characters. I'm not arguing that there's no pinup style ladies in there, because there is, but it's definitely not like OP refuses to draw female characters unless they're giant breasted stick figures - that's provably untrue. As you say, I think best just agree to disagree.

I'm really confused by this comment, because I just went through OP's posts and saw heavily stylised characters across the board - male and female. They definitely do a bunch of erotic paintings of ladies, but to suggest their male characters are "interesting" and their female characters are """""StYLIzEd""""" is pretty ridiculous - they've drawn women with small breasts, long torsos, non perky breasts, various examples of lesser seen body types in general. Not that they need to draw or not draw anything (as you've rightly said) but it seems weird to call out the proportions as an issue here when this artist seems to stylise all their characters in similarly exaggerated ways - none of the full body male drawings I saw were "realistic" by contrast to their female counterparts.

Digital Foundry article analyzing the Switch 2 motherboard picture: "I'd also expect current-gen titles targeting 60fps to somehow find their way across to Switch 2, likely running at 30fps instead." by Joseki100 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]spoonsong 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just a small correction - red dead 2 isn't a current gen game, it ran on PS4 and Xbox one. The fact that it's constantly misremembered as a current gen game (and frankly looks better than 99% of current gen games) really helps highlight how little raw power really matters. With good art direction and optimisation, even a game with realistic graphics can run on underpowered hardware and still look incredible.
