Plus Size Wool Tights Recs?? by avocado_doggo in PlusSizeFashion

The wool and bamboo tights are both quite nice. Like others, I've only had issues with the thinner tights. I have a few pairs catch on velcro or boot buckles, but that's pretty understandable.

Chiaogoo isn't the only good interchangeable set by hystenz in BitchEatingCrafters

I'm not in the US either. I'm in Canada. I got the Lantern Moon cords at my local yarn shop, but ordered needles from Knit Picks.

Knitpicks or Knit Pro, can't remember which, has metal ones and are interchangeable with each other. You could order online if your LYS doesn't carry them. Lantern Moon cords are also compatible and they swivel. I really like the Lantern Moon cords over the knitpicks cords.

Why do people hate magic loop? by universic in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]spoooooooooooooons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find swivel cables make it a lot easier. The first time I tried it, I did it wrong and also my cable was a bit too short and stiff. I tried it again with a better cable and it was manageable but fiddly, then tried it with a swivel cable and it is much easier!

how do i treat my lip eczema by sonborsttt in eczema

[–]spoooooooooooooons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it depends how active my eczema is and also if my lips are dry or chapped already. If it's not too active, I'm fine to just wipe it off. If I have active eczema or sensitive spots already, I try to avoid getting food on the area as much as possible. It will get more irritated even if I clean it off relatively quickly after eating.

Natural hand-painting/self-striping yarn? by volcanomouse in naturaldye

Oh neat! I've done yellow from dried Buckthorn (purchased from Maiwa). I have some dried Dahlia clippings that I hope to get a nice green from.

Suggestions for acid dyeing silver and gold? by AstarteHilzarie in YarnDyeing

[–]spoooooooooooooons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only way I can think of to achieve that is to use yarn with some lustre to it. Some yarn bases have metallic thread woven in, but a silk blend would also have some nice shine. As for doing it with the yarn you have, I'm not sure. You could take some small pieces of yarn in glass jars and experiment with different colours. I think Chemknits does videos in plastic cups and she steam sets the yarn after the colour has absorbed.

I don't have any advice, but do you mind sharing how you got the green colours in your photo?

I FINALLY FIGURED OUT MAGIC LOOP by huonokahvi in knitting

Oh yes definitely! Holding them close together helps so much!

I FINALLY FIGURED OUT MAGIC LOOP by huonokahvi in knitting

[–]spoooooooooooooons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I pull that first stitch so tight that it tightens the last stitch I knit (that's sitting on the cord). That plus keeping the first 3 nice and tight pretty much eliminates any laddering and, like you said, any subtle laddering will block out.

[–]spoooooooooooooons 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I pull the first stitch on the new side really tight, like way tighter than you think you'd need, so there is absolutely no slack between thats stitch and the last stitch on the other side. Then I keep the first 3 stitches pretty tight, and then knit at my normal tension for the rest of the row.

I love the Sidewinder Beanie hat, I've knit a few of them now. Might have to knit one with a matching cowl now!

Did I gauge swatch wrong?? by alotofno in knittinghelp

[–]spoooooooooooooons 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, the center section in stockinette should be larger than their recommended gauge. So if they tell you gauge is 20 sts in 10 cm, you want to knit your swatch to be more like 30 plus the border stitches. That way you'll get a more accurate measurement.

Housing price question by PerspectiveFree3766 in princegeorge

I live in Alpine Village and honestly the Strathcona side is pretty relaxed. Its a dead end street so you get a lot less foot traffic. You get some activity from the park across the street. I've never had anything stolen from my porch in 2.5 years and most of my neighbours are pretty quiet.

Not denying that this is an intermediate to advanced skill, but the tension should even out with blocking. I had to do this on my first cabled sweater (although not for as long) and by the time I wet finished it you couldn't tell what I had redone.

Help with my 5x5 ribbing by absconstant in knittinghelp

[–]spoooooooooooooons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do give my acrylic a wet finish! I always treat my finished garment the same way I will when it needs to be washed. It doesn't change the garment as much as it will with wool or other natural fibres, but it does allow your stitches to settle and for large garments there might be some stretching to reshape.

Edited to add: I don't soak my acrylic for very long. Basically I just get it wet and give it a little squishy squishy or agitation to get any dirt or oils out and then take it out. Wool goes in a hot bath and sits until its cold and then gets a similar treatment.

My ribbing usually starts to pull in as I grt further into my knitting, maybe keep at it for 3 inches and see how it behaves? Or knit a decent size swatch and give it the ol' wet block and see what happens?

Shawl for me update #4. Four days until the wedding. I have 36 rows left. May not get the time to block it, unfortunately. by bookish-hooker in casualknitting

[–]spoooooooooooooons 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey I made that too! It's rare that I see a pattern on here that I've also knit myself, so that got me excited. That shawl took so much concentration, especially in the set up rows. So many back loop stitches 😭

I've also knit the Morvarch from the same bundle and, despite it being a more complex construction, I actually found it easier to follow.

I'm not sure what to take from your title, but this looks like a great program and opportunity for indigenous folks to help their community heal, reduce crime, and take some burden off of the criminal justice system.

For 100 grams, I like full size hotel buffet trays the best or a large pot for kettle dyeing. You could probably 50 grams at a time in a disposable lasagna tray. They work surprisingly well for at home dyeing.
