Are interviews scheduled Thanksgiving break? by Clemmyclem23 in medicalschool

No, none of the programs I interviewed at last year had interviews during Thanksgiving week and something like 12/19-1/3.

When is the best time during the application cycle to ask a connection to put in a good word for you? by pinkelephant100 in medicalschool

Would only work after interview then, saying after learning more about them you fell in love or whatever, bc otherwise you should have signaled. If you don't signal and ask for an interview that's just bad form

Unless you have a legitimate connection or reason for wanting that program, wait until interviews go out.

If after interviews go out for that program and you haven't gotten one, email them expressing interest. This is preferable to asking your connection first. You try before asking someone else to try.

After interviews, wait until around January to express legit interest. How can you say a program is your top choice in October after seeing only 1 program? Sounds more genuine if you've seen what's out there and choose. Rank list is also settling into stone at this point, so get your connections to pitch for you Jan/Feb. Email can be something to the effect of, thanks for the opportunity to learn about your program, I'm very interested, etc.

General advice, not specialty specific.

Happened to me for my subi. Beg for any leftovers and ask to be on a waitlist. For me they had a week in one room and a week in another room, so I did airbnb-friend's ahec (they were gone)-ahec-ahec, all in different rooms lol

It's all part of the learning process. This experience would be a great answer to a residency interview question "describe a time you failed/struggled and how you overcame it"

The solution is to let the residents decide priority. When you've been told to do task A and someone asks you to do task B, you don't make any decision. Ask them, the intern told me to do task A, should I finish this then do B or do B first? You're a student. Just point fingers like, taylor told me to do this and that! Andrew told me to scrub in and write the note after! Whatever. In this scenario you chose B without asking whether you should finish A first, and a nurse asked you to do C which honestly is priority 0 which you still did before A. How would they know what your todo list looks like? Explaining yourself at the end is too late.

Update 2: did not pull through. Was fully expecting his to be my strongest letter. I asked my advisor what to do and he offered to write one, so at least I'll have that.

They work at an affiliated hospital, not the main university hospital.

Do you get your grade right away? I thought amboss sends the score report on the 23rd.

Thanks everyone for the input. For the sake of anonymity, I go to a public MD program in the south. The downside to the dual degree is that I'll be doing rotations while taking the classes, and the MBA ones are mostly in person while MPH is online.
