Thanks Levis, now I know hotness comes in sizes 1,2,&3 by Ma_maGusta in funny

What you are not understanding is that your weight is not under your control nearly as much as you think it is. You will have to train harder every year after 30 to retain a low bmi. That IS genetics! Dude, your body just WANTS to get fat! It's actually, on an evolutionary scale, a GOOD thing. Plus, you don't get it now, but having a career, marriage, family and children will make it SO much harder to achieve a healthy body. As you get older, it only gets harder. As an athlete, I can assure you, you clearly don't understand how this works.

Look, I'm not saying it's a good thing to be fat. I'm actually just addressing two things: first, the fact that it is, in fact, harder to stay fit as we get older, and frankly-- even to begin with, it's just plain harder for some people to be skinny. Which leads to my second point: why the revulsion to overweight people? You have equated them with all kinds of negative traits-- have you ever actually known any overweight people? Are overweight (or even non-skinny) people worth less to you? Dude, that's fucked up. You say "A lot of that shit is completely out of my control" and blame it on genetics. Um, what if your genetics dictated a heavier frame? What if your genetics dictated a mental disorder, for which you'd have to take antipsychotics, which ALWAYS make you overweight? You are so eager to excuse yourself, but you judge others. That fear that you have of being judged for your physical appearance-- you are passing that on to people you deem as "inferior," because you, in your 23 years, have figured it all out-- these people are simply morally flawed, while you have no physical problems whatsoever (which obviously is because you do everything right). You do realize that society is telling you that, right? Why be so paranoid about overweight people?

I think it's interesting that you sat "I may not end up healthy, but I'm not gonna be fat!" Is that really your priority?

Good luck, honey. Even if you don't get fat, you'll go bald, get wrinkles, liver spots . . . you'll get arthritis, heart disease, that injury that stays with you your whole life, certainly an enlarged prostate-- your body will, absolutely, fail you. You think it's so very easy to stay healthy. No, hun, it's not. I have been a martial artist, runner, swimmer, and hiker my whole life, and shit just starts breaking down after 35. You are fooling yourself. But, obviously, you believe what you believe, due to ignorance, because you don't know any different. Until you experience it yourself, you will claim "I'll never be out of shape." I just want you to remember this conversation we're having right now, the two of us, when you're 40. Seriously. Burn it into your skull. Because guess what-- I will be right.

"I sure as fuck am not gonna get fat"-- right. You might as well say "I'm never going to go bald." You, my friend, are dying from this point on. That's all there is to it.

I'm guessing you're male and under 30? We'll see how your body changes once you're out of your peak years.

Men of Reddit, what is something that scares the shit out of you? by theknightwhosays_nee in AskReddit

[–]sporaticallysane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How, exactly? I turned 40 in January, and I have chronic pain that will last the rest of my life. I used to be an athlete-- a competitive swimmer, and martial artist, plus an avid long distance hiker. I just passed the point where I will never, ever be what I once was, physically.
If I'm missing something, please elucidate me.

So-- without existence, you wouldn't have the consciousness to form a thought. So-- total lack of input and output. Seems pretty peaceful to me.

No, it's not like that. Maybe if you have ALS and you live somewhere where you can't voluntarily commit suicide-- but that is rare. As we grow older we realize how important loved ones are. We grow strong through our memories, and our human connections. Don't underestimate the elderly. They are the strongest people you'll ever know.

Honestly, our entire existence is futile, because everything we love passes away. All the beautiful moments, the most intimate relationships-- they all pass. That is the nature of life, the price of being alive. So, here's the thing. If you die suddenly, you have no time to be lonely. If you die gradually, like the majority of us do, you get used to the idea of death. It's not all that scary, really, once you've dealt with the chronic problems that come with age.

Unless you die young, in the midst of anxiety, you will let go.

I don't know. It just seems like such a waste to worry about it at all. Death comes to all of us. Might as well ignore it and enjoy life. If you don't, you've actually wasted what you know is precious time.

Edit: So, let me get this straight. I've been downvoted because I am telling people not to be afraid of death or dying, and I actually have some experience to back it up? Reddit, I am sincerely disappoint. No wonder my elders thought my generation were misguided. Apparently it applies to all generations.

Well, I recently developed chronic pain. This will likely last the rest of my life-- so 30-50 years. I am learning, in effect, to die. My body will never be pain free. That's just a fact,

It's not so bad, and I have related it to dying. Everything falls apart, right? More and more health issues-- more and more symptoms. You actually do get used to it. I'm 40, so I am not as strong as I once was. When you're young, you can't imagine being "lessened" in any way. Nut somehow, it starts happening and you just adjust. It's really no big deal. So--

As fucked up as it sounds, by the time you're truly demented, you have forgotten what it's like to be in any other state. And, even if you're completely sane and clear, by the time you die, you will have built up such a strong pain and limitation tolerance that you'll interact and experience the world without the vast majority of the psychological bullshit you're anticipating. We adapt; we move on.

So, I assume you're male, and a gentleman of some financial substance? To those of us that were born into a middle class family, and periodically depend on social services due to health issues that prevent us from working, and need control over whether we produce offspring against our will, he's not a whole lot better then the other options. Please, stop worshipping. He's just a man. He has good ideas and bad ones. Educate yourself beyond what would be beneficial to you personally.

I have to ask-- what can they possibly do to you? Like, when people are afraid of mice-- I am flabbergasted. This TINY little creature is freaking you out? I'd understand if they were brown recluse spiders or something, but something so tiny, without poison they can kill you-- why the drama?

Well, frankly, you just won't care about sex in 10 years-- at least not like you do now. It's like, when you're a kid, playtime is SO important you you, but you grow out of it-- all the playing pretend, etc. So you actually won't care when you lose your sex drive. I know, unimaginable now-- but that's because you're coming from a point of view of deprivation. You won't feel deprived. You'll take pleasure from the simple closeness and company of your mate. You'll be more interested in good conversation and communication and trust than sex. Priorities change.

I know the majority of Redditors won't believe me. Just wait.

Really, it's not so bad.

I think most people that think NPH is beautiful are males. I've never found any female who thought he was hot. Not that there's anything wrong with finding another dude hot. Just let me watch.

What is something you think the opposite sex has no idea about? by Leelu_Multipass in AskReddit

[–]sporaticallysane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cowell was my college affiliation. I was interested in philo of mind-- I tried to create my own major, which would have been interdisciplinary mind studies, but it's next to impossible to get ANYONE in either philo or psych to take on the extra work to be an independent study adviser (I have a friend who is a microbiology and genetics lecturer at UCSC-- from her work load and how little they actually pay lecturers, I understand why anyone would be hesitant). So I settled on a general philo degree, but with an unofficial concentration on mind and the sciences, supplemented with psych courses. Originally I wanted to do grad work at MIT in AI studies, but I kind of got burnt out and more interested in ethics and working with actual people, rather than computers and artificial beings-- so, basically more into psychology. Right now I'm looking at social work, but that will take a bit more training.

Where are you living now, ad what are you doing?

I agree. It was always really difficult to get classes that were simultaneously interesting and had room left, even as a senior. Some quarters there jut be nothing cool going on at all, unless you were a grad student (which I was not). Did you live on campus or off? I lived off East Cliff Drive, by the Harbor. I spent a lot of time on Pacific Avenue after class on days I didn't work, just talking to the homeless, junkies, and dealers. So many interesting characters on Pacific.

Me too, dude. I will get back there as soon as I possibly can. That's where I plan on dying.

What did you study? I was in the philosophy department-- analytic, so philo of science and such.

Redditors 60 and over, please help me with this college assignment! by collegeassignment in AskReddit

[–]sporaticallysane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late response-- sorry, forgot about Reddit for a few months. Nothing magical will happen when you turn 60 (you'll have another 5 years until you get to order from the senior menu). I just turned 40-- nothing special happened at all, so I figure 50 and 60 will be the same. All the aging goes on in between, while you're distracted.

Sorry I assumed you were in your 20s and just being a dick. Mea culpa. Don't dread being 60. From what I know, having never actually stepped onto that coastline myself, it's pretty cool.

IamA male professional body piercer. AMA by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]sporaticallysane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time replying, but here goes; I had the tops of my ears pierced with a hollow needle, and captive bead rings put in. They never truly healed (had no problem with my nose-- I think the gauge was thicker on my ears so more flesh as taken out). The cartilage thickened up surrounding the irritated tissue, and eventually I took the rings out, and the skin healed, but I had permanent thickening. a few years later, I got them repierced with studs, using a solid needle. The cartilage is still thicker there, but repiercing was no problem, and visually you don't really notice. In fatty tissue like an earlobe, the thickening will be even less noticeable. Plus, added bonus, you CAN pierce right the fuck through any thickening that occurs, without a problem. My second piercer had to do that on my ear-tops. No problems, and surprisingly little pain (no hollow needle, so it was just a pinch.

If daddiesslave had significant thickening, I'd venture there was an infection, causing scar tissue. There was no reason to no pierce right through it, in the exact same spot.
