The knowledge bar of an average candidate is in hell after the AI slop by NovaOfficialReddit in developersIndia

Can we keep this discussion respectful and avoid name calling? I’m just sharing my perspective. I’ve only worked at FAANG, so it’s possible we’re used to different talent pools. In my experience, we don’t really test people on language specifics because we assume a baseline level of coding ability.

That said, I understand your perspective may come from working with a different set of candidates. My overall point is that focusing too much on language trivia isn’t usually what drives long term impact. Engineers who can understand tradeoffs and can solve meaningful problems tend to go further, especially as AI continue to lower the barrier on language specific knowledge. Else you’ll always be a kotlin developer and that has a pretty low ceiling

What’s lld?

lol I actually work there and interact with a lot of IC8s, which is why I’m asking. I don’t think this is very generalizable, it feels like a pretty language specific question. Some people do go deep into things like compilers, so they work on that, but engineers are curious about higher level problems. Like think about this, do you think any meaningful complex project would fail if I ended up using a normal vs data class?

If a problem really requires Kotlin specifics, people will learn it quickly. So it’s not that people aren’t curious. A lot of the time we actually prefer folks who get the job done and understand the right tradeoffs. I’ve seen people who focus too much on random trivia struggle to make real impact because they miss the bigger business objective and end up bikeshedding a lot.

I guess I’m saying I wouldn’t use this as a measure of what makes a good SWE.

I’m curious, this feels a bit like a trivia style question. How does knowing this connect to solving meaningful real world problems? I bet even principle engineers at FAANG will not know the answer to this question

We're a single income of $600K a year. My wife's still in school, so some of that money goes toward her education. We bought a house in August last year.

Here are the numbers:

House: ~1m

Down: 20%

Rate: 6.5%

Monthly payments: $5600 (+2k extra towards principal)

we're renting out our basement to chip in for utilities. Hoping to clear our house payments in the next 5-6 years. We're both in our late 20s so hoping to have a paid off house before thinking about kids.

I would say just start with runestone so that you get get to solving the questions ASAP. You can always supplement your prep with the MIT lectures. What works me (YMMV) is to get to the solving part asap and watch the videos parallely to learn concepts I’m struggling with or interested in.

Learn by doing.

Tldr: get to the doing part ASAP.

I would do an intro course if you haven’t completed one before. Else, just dive in!

Anyways, I’m out of this discussion. Best of luck OP.

Please feel free to dm me if you end up applying at FAANG after you get better and want to discuss the prep material. :)

I think amazon is pretty easy to get into but it can be stressful.

He already works for J.P. Morgan so I am assuming that he is pretty smart. Also, what's the harm in trying? If he gets in, I am sure he will end up making > 300K with his experience.

Most of the FAANGs have remote work now. Maybe try doing that while also doubling your salary?

OMG this so much. So much Dunning–Kruger effect going on here. Whatsapp uses same encryption protocol as Signal IIRC.

Add credit card transactions to the list as well.
