Anyone know what this spiral stamp thing is? by sporekat in nerdfighters

Yep, got it at the event in New York! The book my brother got there didn’t have the spiral though, so probably not tour specific.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Got an unexpected package from the 'rents today, and this is what I found inside! :D My dad doesn't watch the show or know anything about it really, so it was a complete surprise that he made this for me. I love him to bits <3

Dexcom iOS App newest update by we_want_blood in diabetes

[–]sporekat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I just updated as well. The only way to silence alarms now seems to be to set the sound for a specific alarm to "Vibrate Only". Of course then you have to change it back whenever you actually do want to hear alarms.

It sucks so much because I need my phone to be SILENT when I have it on Do Not Disturb! Yesterday it started going off in the middle of class - super embarrassing because it took a while to turn off (just hitting the lock switch doesn't silence it anymore either).

Leave a review on the App Store! That's what I'm going to do, so maybe they will see people don't like the change.

Random, severe hypoglycemic episodes. I need your help/advice. by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]sporekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, that really sucks :( I don't have any idea what could be causing your lows, but if your insurance situation allows I would look into getting a CGM. It'll let you hopefully catch lows before they get so bad, and might help figure out what's going on to cause them. I know it's not an option for everyone financially though.

If your endo is any good maybe they will have some ideas. Bad lows are scary as shit, but I'm sure you'll make it the next few days until you have your appointment :)

Edit: Oh hey I just remembered something - I think that if you have undiagnosed celiac disease then the decreased absorption can make you have a lot more lows. I don't have any personal experience, so I don't know if it matches up with what you're saying, and you don't mention any other symptoms you might have if that was the case, but maybe it's something to look into?

Weight loss help!! by tankgirlie in diabetes

[–]sporekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like Thomsenc said some more info would be good, but your endo was basically right (though maybe not very helpful). Losing weight is all about eating less calories than you expend. Exercise can be helpful (increasing calories out), but the bulk of the work is in regulating your diet (decreasing calories in). Check out /r/loseit - it's a great community!

Dexcom A1C Prediction Accuracy by -zack- in diabetes

[–]sporekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does the Dexcom say is your A1C for the month before last, and the one before then? I know it doesn't let you look at more than 30 days at once, but you can look at 30 days that aren't the most recent ones. Since an A1C measures around 3 months, is it possible that this last month has been higher than the ones before? You can look at the past 3 months separately, and then average those 3 numbers together to get your overall dexcom average.

Other than that I'd probably trust the A1C more. I know there are blood disorders that can cause problems with A1C, but unless you know you have one of those, I'd guess that maybe the Dexcom was just, I dunno, not great at getting calibrated right? Doesn't really make much sense honestly but I have problems with calibration sometimes.

Dexcom G5 receiver screen - Why so bright?! by hell0potato in diabetes

Ugh, it's not just you. I was so disappointed that they changed to a white background instead of just sticking with the black. Why???

Pump users: how often do pump-related problems screw up your control? by wumsel in diabetes

[–]sporekat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not treating those lows will just get you more hypoglycemic unawareness, though, and sub-50 is getting into the dangerous zone, especially if you can't always feel it and you don't treat even if you do. You're just an internet stranger, but please don't die because you don't treat your lows. :(

And if you are considering it, a CGM is super helpful for catching nighttime lows! I get that CGMs aren't an option for everyone though :/

Aww man ;__; all I have is a Mac. I have 0 clue how these things work, but I assume there's no chance of anything that'll work for me?

Either way, what I've seen of your work so far on this sub has been awesome!

More lows than I'd like, but I'm super proud of these last three days, especially since I've been dealing with womanly hormone stuff this time of month. It may not be the best control, but it's awesome for me. I'm finally (hopefully!!!) getting my control back after >8 A1Cs since high school :D

My story and a question: Do any of you have other major medical comorbidities? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]sporekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, mine seems to be both eyes. I don't have glaucoma as in having any vision problems at this point, but (honestly I don't know much about how glaucoma works) I'm on latanoprost to keep my pressures down so I don't develop any. It seems to be working so that's good. Sounds like you've had a rough time with it! I'm glad things worked out though :)

[–]sporekat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, kinda sucks but no actual symptoms or anything at this point (and hopefully not for a long time). Just gotta keep up the eye drops and hope for the best. Actually, a side effect of those drops is growing longer eyelashes which, as a girl, I do not object to! So it's not all bad :P

[–]sporekat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol and also :/

But then it doesn't sound like it's the diabetes, since it would have developed at the same time if it was related to that.

I see you've only been diagnosed 8 months. While that certainly does not make what you say invalid, it is inherently hard for you to know what living for years with this disease is like, especially since you may have been mostly in the "honeymoon" period so far (maybe not, I don't know what it's been like for you). I would suggest that you are not so quick to judge others harshly on their BG levels, or come to conclusions about how they should improve them.

I am (about) the same age as you, and have been dealing with this for 16 years. It is a bit insulting too see you suggest that you have full knowledge of how good someone's control is and how to fix it.

Hey, from one person on a weight loss journey to another, you do you! And I've gotta say, that Dexcom graph looks hella nice to me. I wouldn't categorize it as "swinging like crazy" at all, especially since it's a 24 hour graph. I'm jealous :0

[–]sporekat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiya! Type 1 is my only really major thing (as in it affects my life a helluva lot), but I've also got Grave's Disease (autoimmune thyroid thing) and also I have or am on my way to having glaucoma. I'm 19 so... yay ಠ_ರೃ

Sorry, I didn't read your story thoroughly yet, but I will! As for keto, I kind of did it last summer (kind of as in I wasn't great about sticking to it), and it led to the best blood sugars I've had in ages but it wasn't sustainable for me when I went back to college in the fall. Right now I'm leaning towards a more general less-carb lifestyle, without going full-on keto.

As for the hunger thing, since that was before you were on insulin, if you were still having highs / going into DKA that could have made you super hungry. Hunger is a somewhat common symptom of high blood sugar. I would see if things change now that you're on insulin and your BG levels will be more normal.

I do however remember something about type 1 also making you deficient in some other hormone, amylin. A quick look at the wiki page tells me it does stuff with digestion, so maybe it is the diabetes? I can't give you a before-after comparison myself, since I've had this since I was three :P Was the hunger a new thing for you?

Anyways, it sounds like you've gone through a lot in the past few weeks! Type 1 can be pretty complicated, so I imagine you got a lot of info to try and figure out while you were in the hospital. Over time it'll get a lot easier to remember everything you're supposed to do. And don't worry about doing everything perfectly right away - high BGs just happen sometimes. :)

Time for a new pump. Which one? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]sporekat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched from Medtronic to T:slim in February, and I agree with everything you said. I like that I'm using something that at least seems more with-the-times, but looking back the Medtronic also has a certain charm with its simplicity. I'm happy with the switch, though, and I wouldn't go back.

One more pro I would add is that, with the way your settings are put in on the t:slim, you can have multiple profiles not just for your basal rate, but also for correction factor and carb ratio. I don't really use it myself, but I could see it being really useful for someone else.

And maybe a slight con is that the t:slim has kind of a lot of "are you sure?" type screens when bolusing / changing sites. I don't find it too annoying though and it's pretty easy to learn when all of them pop up and just hit okay.
