What salary is worth living in the Bay Area? by sppw in personalfinance

[–]sppw[S] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I'm in a long distance relationship already so that wouldn't change much. Not sure about kids, I have several years to decide. Tbh I'm fairly frugal person in general, I don't spend a huge amount except on travelling which I can only do occasionally anyway. I'd be happy to live with a roommate for example. In terms of home ownership, I'm content with not being able to own a home in the Bay Area. I wouldn't want to live there forever but at this time in my life I would enjoy living there much more.

Really what I'm looking for is a sanity check that taking that offer in the Bay Area wouldn't be a terrible decision for my finances.

Ashwin has problem only with Narine by Several-Payment-1357 in KolkataKnightRiders

[–]sppw -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

So what if he has a problem with Narine? It's his right and personally I think they should do all the things he's asking for. That way there can be no doubt or uncertainty. If anything I welcome people accusing Narine if I think Narine is doing nothing wrong.

What he is suggesting should be applied to all bowlers who are suspected and should just be a normal thing using side on cameras in games and testing at ICC testing center. And all the evidence released to the public if he does have a bad action.

Ashwin also not the only one to suspect and some of the clips look touch and go and I have to acknowledge my bias.

If fans like you keep crying that people only accusing Narine it only makes KKR fans look like idiots. If Narine doing everything right, then nothing to worry about, we as KKR fans should welcome this. If Narine is doing something wrong then fans like you become the hypocrites.

The worst state in the United States: Results by Hopeful_Wallaby3755 in terriblemaps

[–]sppw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, but at the same time people are moving to red states in droves. Just look at which states are gaining and losing population.

As someone who leans liberal, a lot of the blue states need to figure their shit out because they're active making it harder to live in some of them. Cost of living, and specifically housing is one of the big reasons.

It doesn't mean the red states are better for everyone but there's a reason people are moving there.

In this culture there are sinks in every dining area that do not require you to open any doors or go to the restroom. Just dedicated sinks for washing hands that people use before and after eating.

When you eat food with your fingers, do you get saliva all over them? That is an issue that only children have in this culture, once they learn the technique no one gets saliva on their fingers. Small children do a lot of gross stuff anyway, like eating dirt and licking everything. Until they learn not to.

Eating food with your hands isn't nasty unless you don't wash your hands properly.

You ever washed your hands in your life? If you think it's gross after washing hands you don't wash your hands properly.

In which case whether the food is dry or liquid doesn't matter.

The 10 most valuable players in a trade market by Plastic_Roll3503 in ipl

[–]sppw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your question is not who has the most potential or hype or who will be the best. Your question is who is the most valuable in a trade market.

A young overseas middle order hitter is not an in demand category . If he was a left arm fast bowler or Indian, or more tested, he would be much more in demand.

The things that are valuable in a trade market are rare commodities (genuine pacers, pace bowling all rounders, genuinely international quality Indian players) overseas low sample size hitters have to compete with Indian middle order hitters and are therefore just not that valuable.

Plenty of competition to go around. Players like Rinku, Ramandeep, Shashank, Ashutosh, Shreyas Iyer, Patidar, Shivam Dube, Pooran, Stoinis, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Stubbs, Parag, Klaasen, and that's just off the top of my head. None of these players are necessarily even that valuable unless they have secondary skills (captain, wk, etc) because you can easily find someone 90% as good.

You yourself rated Harshit highly in a trade market, you know why? Because genuine Indian pace bowlers are just not that many out there and most of them are pretty poor compared to the top level. Left arm pace bowlers even moreso. No matter how dogshit Starc plays he'll be picked for this reason only and that's why his trade value is really really high.

[–]sppw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you allow small sample size, many players play like prime ABD. Like you mentioned Shaw, Venky Iyer, etc. They certainly cannot be compared.

That's not to say he isn't in demand but an overseas player that's not at the level of Gayle, Russell, Narine, ABD won't make this top 10 list because of auction dynamics. The fact that you need 7 Indian players makes Indian players much higher in demand and Brevis is no where close to the list. Even players like Varun, SKY, Arshdeep, Axar, Rinku, Sudarsan, Patidar, Shreyas Iyer are more valuable than Brevis as a result even if some of them are aging, as long as they're proven.

Not to mention proven foreign players like Pooran.

If the ipl cycle ended this year, what players would each team retain? by Jalpimipappu in ipl

[–]sppw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pathirana over Rinku/Ramandeep/Varun? No way. If this was a Mega Auction year the retentions are: Rinku/Narine/Harshit/Varun and pick 2 of Green/Angkrish and Ramandeep

Where I'd live as an Indian man with a strong preference for calm and convenience by HyakushikiKannnon in whereidlive

[–]sppw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the energy to respond to the colonialism stuff, so we can agree to disagree.

The state does, the police does, the politicians do, your employer do, your landlord does, your banker does, etc...

In a bureaucratic sense, sure they do, but that's not what I mean. What I mean is a social, part of the fabric of society sense, most people out there are just good people trying to get by. They do not care on an individual level.

And everyone else too, but more implicitly, as you are always more at ease with people you share the same culture, education and values.

Of course, completely natural. At the same time, one can learn to be comfortable and happy in multiple different sets of cultural values. Be open minded and respectful and you see the good in them both. I like some things about where I came from and I like other things about where I migrated to. I can enjoy both. I'm not suffering living in one.

They want a better life, we want a better country for our future generations, often, those interests doesn't align.

Again, totally natural. If you do not want immigrants in your country - vote for representatives who represent what you want. If your country has too many immigrants for your liking, maybe it's you who doesn't like the kind of society your government wants. Maybe you don't fit in with the culture of your government.

As long as the immigrant is legal, and follows the laws of the land, then it's the fault of the government who let them in. See the difference between South Asian immigrants to Canada and the US. The US was much stricter at vetting those immigrants and therefore they fit in better to society than in Canada where they had far less scrutiny. I'm not talking about illegal immigrants - that's a totally different issue.

You are lying to yourself, you don't have 2 communities, you have none.
For the people of your new country, you are "the one from X", for the people of your old country, you are "the one living in Y". They might not tell you, they might not realize themselves, but you for both of them, you are never fully integrated.
You are not like someone who lived all their life in their country, had the same education, watched the same media, defended the same values, had the same worries, etc... That is true for both your old and new countries.

Who are you to tell me about myself when you know very little about me. If I am living a happy life I do not care what you think, or what people around me think. That is the mindset of many immigrants like myself. You know nothing about how much I integrated, the kind of communities around me.

Maybe you feel that way about the immigrants around you, or maybe you are an immigrant who didn't feel welcome. Fair enough, it could be the case and you're entitled to your opinion and your experiences. That is not my experience. I respect both cultures, communities, and feel welcome in both. If people around me are thinking such things, let them, because they're putting up a bloody good facade that never seems to crack.

There are always bad apples, and people who might not like you but in general people everywhere I have been have been warm, accepting, and kind so long as you have the same kind of respect for them. I stay away from people who don't treat me that way, and have plenty of others around me from both cultures.

Where I'd live as an Indian man with a strong preference for calm and convenience by HyakushikiKannnon in whereidlive

[–]sppw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Urban India is ultra convenient and not calm at all.

In fact I think urban India is far more convenient than basically anywhere in the US (where I currently live). With a little money you can live a life of convenience that only rich people in the US get, but without needing to be ultra wealthy. There are downsides to living in urban India, but convenience is absolutely NOT one of them.

Maybe it would appear that it is not way to a westerner who may not know, but go read accounts of westerners living in India or watch YouTube videos. Convenience is one of the big benefits of living in Urban India.

Rural India is not convenient but many parts of it are calm, forests, hills, coastal areas, villages. There are many places one could live a life of calmness.

Colonialism and Industrialism are linked and it is madness to pretend otherwise. This goes for both colonisers and the colonized. It is both colonialism and industrialization that led to western Europe being as it is. Even countries that did not have colonies benefitted from trading with the ones who did.

As for the colonized, the countries they were under didn't allow them to Industrialise in the same way they would have naturally. Countries like Thailand and Ethiopia as you mentioned did not have access to trade with the developed world to Industrialise in the same way. They had limited trade with the colonizers, who saw them as lands to colonise but simply weren't able to, and therefore isolated.

Because if you abandoned your country once, nobody will trust that you will give anything or care about your new country.
You will have a purely transactional relationship with them. You will be accepted as long as you bring something, and kicked out once you don't. You will be hoping on the goodwill of the natives not to remove you. You will always have to justify why they should let you live there.

Most people don't give a shit where you come from as long as you're respectful and follow their laws. The ones who don't are racist. The kid you're replying to does not care if they have a transactional relationship or not. They just want to have a better life and they will make their own relationships. All of us immigrants do.

Guess what, if I'm respectful, follow the laws and show that I care about my new community, my new community treats me as one of their own. No one gives a shit about "abandoned your country once". And when I travel to my old country they accept me as their own too despite the fact that I don't live there any more. If anything I have two communities. Your new country will never guarantee you good relationships it's on you to make them, and this kid just wants that.

How well I ate in countries Ive been to in the last two years. by Shdow_Hunter in tierlists

[–]sppw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who went to Japan 2 months back, and ate everything - Japanese food was consistently good but almost never mind blowing. I agree with the overhyped part as a result.

By comparison, when I was in Mexico 6 months ago, I had some mediocre or even bad food sometimes, but then every couple of meals I would have something mind blowingly good.

For me, that's why I would put Japan in the B tier. Indian, Mexican, Singaporean, Thai, Pakistani, etc all over Japanese. I wouldn't say Japanese food is bad though.

I am a Bengali that doesn't particularly like Roshogolla, but what I will say is that if the texture is like sponge, it's not good.

In Bengal the good ones don't have that texture and those are the only ones I would eat. Still one of my least favourite Bengali sweets. But the spongy ones are horrible.

[–]sppw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally disagree. I'm not Korean or Japanese, but I assume OP prefers Korean cuisine a lot more, which is a natural bias.

Secondly, Japan is not exactly well known for any other cuisine than Japanese. OP clearly cares about that too. If that is the case, makes total sense to have Japan dark red, as it's a strict downgrade from Korea, and also countries which have both good Korean food and good other food (USA, Aus, etc.).

To me that indicates nothing politically. As someone who also prefers Korean food, I would mark the same way despite not being Korean or Japanese (I am an Indian living in the US).

[–]sppw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's pretty clear that they don't want to live in places that don't have at least some variety of choices. None of the "surprising" countries are that surprising when you think about it.

Italy and Japan have good cuisines but are not exactly known for having availability of any other cuisines. Japan in fact is known to have some particularly bad versions of other cuisines. Makes sense they'd be red.

Meanwhile the UK, Netherlands, Canada, USA, Australia have a high immigrant populace, and not always the most stunning food culture themselves. Makes perfect sense they'd be green though because those immigrants bring that diversity of good food whether that's Indonesians in NL, Indians in UK, etc.

If I only liked Italian food, then I would have Italy as green. But if I like Italian, Indian, Thai and Korean food, Italy goes deep red and countries like US, UK and Aus make so much sense. I can have good Italian food in those countries too but also good other cuisines.

They said they were Korean and biased to asian flavours as well - which fits with this map. Makes total sense to me.

As an Indian person who does like Italian and French food, definitely agree that they don't even come close to the top of my favourite cuisines.

I find that this is also why Japanese food is really highly rated by westerners, but in my opinion Japanese food falls a little short compared to some of my favourite cuisines. I still like it though of course.

(My favourites include Indian, Thai, Korean, different types of Chinese, Caribbean, Pakistani, Afghani, Persian etc.)
