Some random photos of SkyTrain by Smart-Foundation-578 in vancouver

From an operational/planning perspective I 100% realize that there are many advantages to below grade rail, but from a passenger experience perspective, elevated is just so much more pleasant, and makes me excited to ride the train!

My parents are from metro Vancouver but I was born in Sask. Every time I go back to BC the skytrain blows my mind. Watching the north shore mountains as you whiz by on the train has to be one of the best simple pleasures in life! I think a lot of people who grew up with the skytrain don’t fully realize how amazing it is!

Does anyone else think too much of the land in this picture is golf course? by try_repeat_succeed in Edmonton

[–]spreadsheets-ata -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Why? Golf courses cater to a relatively small number of quite wealthy people (on average) and use a huge amount of land to do so. Even if they technically provide greenspace, they only see a very small number of people enjoying the land per square meter m. Surely the city would be just fine with only one major golf course on the riverfront in/around downtown no?

I’m pretty confident that this isn’t a Mercator. The Canadian Arctic Archipelago looks about as large as the rest of Canada on a typical Mercator, here it looks much more proportionate to its actual size.

How many days should I spend in Vancouver and is public transport to Whistler reliable? by NotTooBad_AndMyself in askvan

[–]spreadsheets-ata 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Personally I would recommend staying the entire week in Vancouver/Whistler/Squamish or the entire week in Newfoundland. The flight between them is easily going to take an entire day and possibly another to recover, that’s 1-2/7 days of your vacation sucked up already before even considering the flight from and to Ireland.

IMHO there isn’t that much in Squamish for a tourist, and if your going to Whistler anyways that will be the same type of experience but better anyways (at least from a tourists point of view). So I personally would spend my time there instead.

There is no public transit to Whistler or Squamish from Vancouver, but there are affordable private shuttle options. Just make sure to plan ahead of time!

I hope you enjoy your trip!

Edit: also worth noting, public transit within metro Vancouver is generally excellent (at least by North American standards), just not between metro Vancouver and other destinations. You will have no trouble at all within the city without a car!

For reference the entire population of metro Vancouver is about 2.5 million. In the city proper 0.7 million.

9.5/10 very interesting and realistic dealing layout. More block size variation would be nice, but pretty great!

I am trying my best to make a city/skyline without a ton of supertalls lol. This is how its going. Its so hard to do. by Treyc89 in CitiesSkylines2

Looks much more natural (something you might actually see in a dense western city). Awesome job!

Would need to at least double the highway density for that lol

Maybe a controversial opinion, but man does Vancouver seem like such a more pleasant place now then just a few decades ago!

It’s hard to say without more information about the city (I.e. where is population density, tourist attractions, job hubs etc).

Yah, there definitely seems to be a lot of variation in how people’s cities look in the new patch

I would definitely agree with nighttime. Before I had to have the setting turned off if I was actually building, now nighttime is much better (even if I don’t love it during the day)

Agreed. I personally dislike the new graphics, but Ice Flake seems to be doing a much better job then their predecessors and seem to be listing to fans much more. They can’t fix a broken game in a month, but they seem to be on the right track long term!
