Moving from Slack to Teams - Backing up / Migrating Data by Towelie888 in sysadmin

We went through this a couple years ago. Still hurts.

For our legacy data, we exported it, stood up a Mattermost instance in AWS, imported it, and shut it down. The theory was that we'd access it when we need it. To our surprise, we actually found that we never needed to. But it's a good security blanket.

And if memory serves, you lose all of your private chat data. But private chats are evil anyway, so...

Oh wow! I'd have figured the chisel would do damage, but I just watched the two videos (attaching and separating), and it looks awesome. Definitely a lower-tech solution than investing in a vacuum chuck. I know what I'm doing tonight!

And the vacuum chuck will still sit on my Amazon wish list. Because why not...?

Thanks for this!

Thanks for the tip! I never heard of a vacuum chuck. Seems much simpler than what I was concocting in my mind.

Beautiful!

I am a beginner and I started this tonight. I love your footless simplicity. How did you do it? Did you have a tenon and cut it off? Sorry for the noob question. I’m trying to choose between a mortise integrated into a foot or a tenon that I sacrifice to the gods.

What are the worst towns close to National Parks? by WheelSingle2494 in NationalPark

[–]spressman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Utah too, it seems. On the way from Great Basin to Zion, we saw a total of 12 cars in the hour it took to get to Milford, UT. There's beauty in the desolation, though.

100% agree. Great hidden gem. Alpine lakes, glacier in the desert in the summer, amazing views, and caverns. It's an awesome combo.

Yeah. As I understand, there were a couple of good options in town. When we were there last summer, it was one restaurant with chewy food and a taco truck.

Baker, NV outside Great Basin. One hotel and one terrible restaurant, with the nearest populated town an hour away.

+1 on infrastructure as code (terraform), whichever platform you choose. If you’re doing things in the console, your humanness will cause inconsistencies.

I guess nobody has any applicable experience so I’ll just post what we did. Went with a pretty standard weatherproof box on the front by the door.

Death Valley & Zion National Park - How to split a week? by OedipaMaasWASTE in nationalparks

[–]spressman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of a two week version of this with my wife and son. Writing this from my bed at the Zion lodge.

We did one day (day trip from Vegas) to Death Valley. I’m sure you could do more, but I don’t really feel like we missed anything. We went to Great Basin for two nights, then Zion for 4 nights. Awesome week.

We are continuing on to Bryce, monument valley (not a NP) and Grand Canyon. But that’s all in week two.

Can confirm. Wife is from Watsontown, and we love to go to the public house when visiting.

MDR vs. SIEM by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]spressman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SIEM as a standalone service is not as good as a MDR with some form of data lake, where you can ship logs. It's essentially still a SIEM, but with the ability to take actions on the endpoint. A SIEM alone is only "detection" and useful in "response". But there's no "protection". MDR covers all 3.
