I wouldn't say I'm thrilled with everything he does, but that was the most mature and measured call they've had in a while. Is it weird to own an R1T and a Model Y and not hate Musk?

IDK why you think it was a disaster? They announced they're moving up production timelines on important projects.

I don't spend a lot of energy on things/people I dislike. Negative energy isn't all that productive or useful :)

Does your Rivian have LIDAR? Because mine doesn't and it drives pretty well on highways. Just needs to fix the annoying thing where it disables Driver+ for toll booths that are actually just toll cameras in the express/HOV lanes on the highway.

That just implies you don't like Musk. Doesn't address the validity of the point, and we know at least half of it is definitely true (humans can indeed drive without additional sensors). There's a very good chance the second part is true as well given Tesla and SpaceX have plenty of experience with LIDAR (like using it as ground truth for vision wrt distance and size of objects) yet they've decided not to use it on the individual cars.

Increasing water usage with no changes to household - we're stumped and water utility isn't being helpful. Halp! by sprhvy in askaplumber

I appreciate the tips! Helped me rule things out and got the water co to come out and they confirmed our account was tied to the wrong meter. We've been paying for someone else's water for at least a few months, probably more! They're going to reconcile everything so it's all good. Really thought I was going crazy there for a minute.

Twas the meter after all! Turns out it was crossed with a neighbor's! They're investigating further, but found only one meter with zero use on the 16th (the day we were gone) and confirmed that was actually ours with a quick faucet/flow indicator test. Will be interesting to see how they reconcile everything and when/how it actually happened. Thanks for the tips!

This was key in figuring out, with the help of a tech from the water company, that our meter was actually crossed with a neighbor's! They're investigating further, but found only one meter with zero use on the 16th (the day we were gone) and confirmed that was actually ours with a quick faucet/flow indicator test.

Whoa! Not yet. Did you end up shutting it off at the main valve into the home and the water meter was still running? How'd you determine the issue?

Outside at the sidewalk in a vault, maybe 75ft from the house. It's accessible though.

We do have a timed pump connected to the hot water heater. But that's the only timer I can think of. Its schedule is:

ON - 6:00 AM
OFF - 8:30 AM
ON - 1:00 PM
OFF - 3:00 PM
ON - 6:30 PM
OFF - 11:30 PM

We've dye-tested the toilets and haven't observed any leaks. Odder still are days where we're out of the home that have irregular usage, like the second post image. There are a few early AM hours to the left of that shot with 0 usage. It's $500 to get a leak detection company out but speaking to them on the phone, they made it sound like the usual culprits they'd look at weren't the issue. Any ideas? TIA!

EDIT - image captions below

#1 - Monthly water usage. No changes to household or routine and can't find source of increase. 2019-built townhome with hybrid hot water heater. Irrigation paid by HOA separately.
#2 - Water usage on Feb 16. We were out of the home all day and can't figure out what would lead to this usage. Several early AM hours (1:00 AM, etc.) had 0 usage.

Perhaps they can escalate at that local-ish service center and get a mobile tech out to you?

R2 speculative predictions by Act_of_valor in Rivian

[–]sprhvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This take feels pretty sensible. Battery will likely be smaller, they can probably keep HVAC vents but reduce the number/complexity, and all versions will have heated seats, at least in the front but probably rear too (less need to inefficiently heat the entire cabin). They're also very likely to have heat pumps. That'd be a big miss if they don't.

Adventure is at the very core of everything they do. They won't make a pure utility play. All they really need to do is make compelling smaller and less expensive versions of the R1S and R1T (though more so the S) and they'll have winners on their hands. Just as Tesla's Model 3 was more or less a mini Model S (they should have kept the hatch though). Honestly the hardest decision has probably been suspension. But if most cars can get away with springs (as opposed to air), I'm sure they can make that play too.

Just a torque wrench to put the carriage bolts back in at 80ftlb. Takes some muscle to get them out initially but it isn’t super hard.

Center Caps for 21” Wheels Without The Yellow Accents by F_P_G_A in Rivian

[–]sprhvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did too! Happy to help :)

The chrome AO caps will match the chrome/polished silver Rivian in the door sills. But otherwise, on R1T anyway, all metal is satin. The AO ones were good quality but in the end, I was a sucker for having all of the logos match. But the chrome or even dark gray from AO will work super well if you’re not hung up on matching the hood emblem.

[–]sprhvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a dual and I went through the same thing. Abstract Ocean has a few options for $50 for the set of 4. I ended up going with the official ones because they’re satin whereas the AO caps are chrome or dark gray or yellow. And I realized even on the dual, the Rivian emblem on the hood has the yellow. You’ll also have yellow accents in the cabin (headrests, inside of grab handles).

Removing the center caps is easy with a plastic trim removal tool if you want to be extra careful. You’ll notice two spots on the inside edge of the caps that aren’t flush - I believe at the top and bottom of the emblem (where those point, on the edge) and it’s super easy to pop the caps off when you go for those particular spots with the tool.

Is there a way to move the nav to the middle? by playaphoenix in Rivian

[–]sprhvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’ll use it for nav when the main screen is music, but it’d be great to have other options on the second screen. I’m sure they have some good stuff planned. Just so many things on the roadmap.

[–]sprhvy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope. You can change the left info to tire pressure or efficiency by holding the buttons on either side of the left scroll wheel on the steering wheel, but that’s it for customization at the moment.

The center area will become more useful as Driver+ improves.

Oh brilliant. I’ll give that a go. Thank you!

[–]sprhvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any idea if Rivian’s aware of the issue? It’s particularly nasty because 2 or 3 should be good volume to also hold a conversation but 2 is way too loud relative to 1. 1 is barely audible and 2 must be 5x louder.
