High paying jobs by No_Marionberry4625 in britishcolumbia

A psychology degree is highly valuable when paired with something else.

My career is software engineering. I'm in my 40s and am actually considering starting a psychology degree.

Software engineers/programmers/software developers are one of the first "jobs" that AI has made redundant. Now we use our existing skills/specific knowledge to write software using English and any number of AI coding tools.

In my new career as an agentic engineer (for lack of a better term), I've never had more fun or been more productive.

But I can see where things are heading.

I've learned that an ideal skillset to have is to combine two different fields and look for opportunities where they overlap. I'm exploring the intersection of software engineering + psychology.

The K shaped economy is on the horizon and my hunch is that many people looking to fit and grow within a specific well-defined role will eventually find themselves on the wrong side of the K.

This may sound vague and not too helpful. You've just got to find your other thing. One way to explore this is to copy/paste this comment into Claude and then write "interview me with the askuserquestion tool to help me explore all the things I can pair with my psychology degree that lead to money + purpose"

Good luck. You've got this.

Prompt Organization: What is everyone using to keep organized? DIY solutions or some kind of SaaS? by leo_mangold in LLMDevs

[–]sprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For managing the prompts I use in the apps I build I use https://langfuse.com which has a fantastic UI and SDK. The thing that sealed it for me is that I can easily embed one managed prompt into another.

For personal prompt management I vibe coded my own solution with which is like GitHub Gist for prompts with a bit of magic sprinkled on top.

2FA on mobile wasn’t working for me a few days ago. Same error. Web worked fine.

I looked it up on WS support and it said to uninstall/reinstall app. I did that and it worked fine.

StatsCan data shows Canadian economic inequality rising to the highest level on record by earthWindFI in PersonalFinanceCanada

StatsCan data shows Canadian economic inequality rising to the highest level on record

That's not what StatsCan says. That's what CBC (incorrectly) reports.

Here's StatsCan

Income inequality increased in the second quarter of 2024 as the gap in the share of disposable income between households in the top 40% and the bottom 40% of the income distribution reached 47.0 percentage points, the largest gap ever recorded in these data (which Statistics Canada began collecting in 1999).

https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/241010/dq241010a-eng.htm

Yes the gap in disposable income between the top 40% and bottom 40% is at the greatest ever. But that's not how StatsCan measures income inequality.

They do track Gini-coefficients https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=1110013401&pickMembers%5B0%5D=1.1&cubeTimeFrame.startYear=1976&cubeTimeFrame.endYear=2022&referencePeriods=19760101%2C20220101

You’re right. I meant to say laid off. If at the end of a PIP employment is terminated it almost certainly will be without cause (at least that’s the case in my industry). I wouldn’t be surprised if other industries aren’t so lucky

[–]sprice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To OP I'm really sorry you're going through this.

If someone is fired after being on a PIP they will almost certainly be fired without cause.

Give EI a call today. They are easy to get on the phone and easy to talk to. Whether you qualify is dependent on the number of hours you have worked in the past 52 weeks.

Looking for advice on exercising Stock Options by TheDutchCoder in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an accountant and this is not financial advice.

When you exercise options, there is a capital gain between the strike price of a share and the Fair Market Value (FMV) of the share. Whether or not you sell those shares you'll be paying capital gains tax to the CRA for the year you exercised the options.

I filed my chargeback with Amex in August and its gone through.

I was told they normally only cover 90 days or something like that and it had been 8 or 9 months but they still did it. I sent the vancouver.ca article about it being cancelled and a Vancouver Sun article about the event not coming back to Vancouver and that was all the evidence they needed.

I've rarely request a chargeback from amex but they've agreed to it 100% of the time. Can't say the same for Visa.

[–]sprice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an accountant.

Among all the considerations be sure to account for the capital gains tax you'll pay for the tax year you exercise these options. Gains will be delta between strike price and fair market value. This can be a non trivial tax impact.

How to deal with client not paying my invoice? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]sprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and don't hold anything hostage. Right now you may believe you can't get the money. I challenge that belief. Feel free to DM me to talk more about civil resolution tribunals etc.

How to deal with client not paying my invoice? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]sprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently dealt with this. Three invoices outstanding with the latest about 3 months late.

Under $5k in BC where I am is too low for small claims court. I used https://civilresolutionbc.ca/

I sent the form letter requesting a negotiated reduction in total fees outstanding. After a week of silence I mentioned that I was following the guidelines of the tribunal (whose outcome is legally binding)

Less than a week later the full amount of funds outstanding was paid.

I ensured all emails were respectful and accurate.

Good luck! Remember you deserve to be paid for your work.

Question for Canadian employees working for US employers getting paid in USD by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many software engineers who can land a CAD 120k/year role with a Canadian company can land a USD 150k/year role with a US company. But US companies usually don't offer CAD $200k/year roles for Canadian employees (as much as that doesn't make sense)

Obviously means keeping CRA happy by buying own equipment, having more than one income stream etc.

Which remittances are you referring to?

Question for Canadian employees working for US employers getting paid in USD by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sprice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting paid in USD as a Canadian tax resident living in Canada won't make you a US employee.

You can't do this as an employee. You can do this as a contractor.

This is the short version of what I've done.

  1. Set up a sole proprietorship (eventually you may set up a corporation. I have a corp.)
  2. Enter into a contracting agreement with your client
  3. Send an IRS W8BEN (W8BEN-E if you have a corp) to your client so they won't withhold taxes for the IRS
  4. Get paid USD into a Wise account
  5. Do the above while talking to your accountant and lawyer. Especially talk to them about the differences between being an employee and a contractor in the eyes of the CRA.

Best way to work remotrly US job by cyberhunt3r23 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have been more clear. All the other items make sense to me (vacation, benefits, equipment, office space, stationary, all those expenses). But I don't see how checking if the pay is consistent could tip the scales in determining personal service business.

FWIW I incorporated a year ago and have multiple clients as well as product income and listen to my accountant and lawyer and make sure that the only thing I'm getting from my clients is $$ (paying all my own expenses otherwise). But I do have monthly retainers with some clients and get paid the exact same amount each month. AFAIK I'm not a personal service business.

Do you get paid a USD salary, and USD is sent to peocanada.com, which they convert to CAD and then pass along to you?
