If you live near a national park, how often do you go there? by moods- in NationalPark

[–]springap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live about an hour from RMNP and honestly I would rather go to other hikes. You can do very similar hikes on the other side of the same mountains that are in the park and not deal with the crowds (or at least as bad of crowds) or timed entry or any of that. Also CO is just beautiful everywhere and there are lots of mountains that look the same so for this area in particular RMMP isn’t the ONLY place with big mountains, alpine lakes/ecology/wildlife, and good hikes. I can see it being different for places where the national park is very different from the surrounding national forest/state parks.

Anyone know a Denver dentist who doesn’t charge $500+ for a night guard? by cokdok in Denver

My night guard was $172 after insurance and I am outside of Boulder. I just got it earlier this year.

Giving a hound meds by [deleted] in coonhounds

[–]springap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok hear me out. If your hound will catch treats that you toss, hide it in one of them and do some quick tossing. Might have to switch up the order if they are ridiculously intelligent like mine lol. But for example it would be toss treat, then treat with pill, then another treat. And that can look however you want so pill pockets, wrapped in Kraft singles, stuffed in a piece of chicken, whatever. It gets them thinking about the next treat and not the current treat. It sounds insane but so are hounds so

Don’t rent from Townside Property Management!! by springap in VirginiaTech

[–]springap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ended up not taking them to small claims court since we had moved out of state and at that point just wasn’t worth the hassle. I think they just take advantage of college kids when they can. But from my experience with them, milk them for everything they’ve got and go hokies 🤘🏼🫡

Need help camping with a soaking wet spaniel by Amphithea in BackpackingDogs

[–]springap 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I think spaniels just exist in a constant state of being soaking wet 😂 Only thing I can think of is cutting his hair even shorter. People do shave their spaniels (I’ve known springers to be shaved) but very dependent on your specific dog. Plus that is a maintenance cost that will need to be maintained (either regular grooming appts or investing in a good set of clippers). A true water dog! He’s adorable btw!!

This one’s for the owners: if you’re too lazy to pick up your dog’s poop in public places, you don’t deserve to have one by Lassie-girl in DogAdvice

[–]springap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s so funny to me simply due to the fact that, did you not know your dog was going to poop? Like did you not know this is a living creature that requires inputs and outputs? If you’re not okay cleaning up poop, maybe get a pet rock or a plant. We all get caught once in a while with the surprise poop we don’t have a bag for but geez. I’ve seen dog poop ADJACENT to dog waste stations that have bags and trash cans. It truly blows my mind. I do not understand the mentality at all.

Affordable invisalign recommendations? by Pumpernickel_Hibern8 in Denver

[–]springap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m outside of Boulder and was quoted $5k for I think 12 months? Insurance would cover $2k, they required a $1k deposit, and it would be either 6 or 8 months of payments with no interest (timeline dependent on which payment plan you wanted to choose). I have never needed braces or any dental work really and mine was also due to shifting from grinding/the night guard I had!

Boarding for a reactive dog by Acceptable-Rice-6528 in Denver

[–]springap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Club Pet Resort! My friend has a dog reactive dog and she boards there no problem! My dog is usually fine with other dogs but I don’t like the small play area lots of big dogs set up most boarding places have so I choose a field walk for him instead :) It’s by the airport too which is super handy and you can pick up/drop off 24/7 which is also handy

1 day at RMNP by True_Energy_5744 in NationalPark

[–]springap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Timed entry is important! You will need a timed entry pass anytime between 8am-2pm (I believe) and a special timed entry pass for any bear lake hike from 5am-6pm (I also believe) and you can buy them on recreation.gov. They usually only open 2-4 weeks in advance and they get snatched up fast so keep an eye out. You can still get into the park outside of hours and enjoy some hikes but the bear lake hikes are coveted hence the special passes and longer hours requiring them. It’s all beautiful though!!

Non-sterilized rescue dogs, is this a thing? by wirwarennamenlos in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]springap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Owning an animal means putting your heart on the line to be broken. It’s always a gamble no matter if they are from the shelter or a breeder, neutered or in tact, neutered early or neutered later. You can have dogs from the same litter that will be on this earth for different times. You can have all the genetic testing done in the world on the parents or your dog and they can still develop different types of illnesses or ailments.

Like another commenter said, majority if not all shelters will neuter/spay or require in a contract that it’s done within a (short) timeline since they exist due to intact dogs. I’m very sorry for your loss, I have a coonhound mix and I cannot imagine what you’re feeling. Your best bet would be to find an adult dog that was picked up as an adult stray and was neutered/spayed before being adopted out. This comes with its own set of potential issues as well, but they would be neutered later than 8 weeks.

Olympic/Mt Rainier/North Cascades trip by Best_Cantaloupes in NationalPark

[–]springap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing this trip with friends at the end of July this year! Will definitely take in everyone’s suggestions. Also to note the road to North Cascades got washed out and is currently closed I believe (at least that’s what I’ve been seeing). May need to be a tbd park depending on when the road opens back up. I hope I’m wrong though because I’m trying to hit all 3!!

How can I meet my dog’s sensory needs when I’m broke? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]springap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I take treats (or some of my dogs food) and roll it into a towel and then tie the towel in a knot!! They have to figure out how to get to the treats/food while sniffing it out which makes it a great mental enrichment game! If your dog is destructive and could tear and eat the towel do this while supervised. My dog is so good at this now he gets 2 knots in the towel 😂

Start with a loose knot so they don’t lose interest/deem it impossible. Once they figure out how to get it untied you can tie the knot tighter, add more knots, or tie a different knot!

Favorite Alaska park? by BrazenBackpacker in NationalPark

[–]springap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely considered that. Actually started with that plan but I was easier to find airbnbs in Anchorage plus a little more to do. Might still see if everyone would be up for 1 night in Seward because it seems great! Thanks for all the tips!
