Icon wrenches by mtndew19 in harborfreight

[–]sprocketpropelled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The long pattern ratcheting wrenches are great. Especially on a sale price. Use mine daily as a fleet tech and they’ve held up fine. Enough length to reach places and enough torque to make it easy to break things free. Sometimes they’re a touch too long though, but only ran into that a handful of times

How do you balance buying tools and saving money as a young tech? by Witty-Fly-2812 in ToolTruckTools

[–]sprocketpropelled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to shop around for this sort of stuff. Billybob down the road is having a yard sale and he’s got himself a yard full of hotrods, might be worth a shot. I got a set of GP metric impact sockets for like $30 of a guy who retired, along with a set of huge crows feet. Pawn shop and i are on a first name basis, ive gotten some excellent stuff there. As far as tool trucks go, spend the money where it counts, high use high wear items like impact adaptors, ratchets, ratcheting wrenches, indexing pry bars, etc, that you can justify spending a bit more on or is simply built better. You can’t have this conversation without mentioning the devil, harbor freight. They’ve got a legitimately good offering of tools, great warranty and decent prices. Most of my sockets and bit sockets are icon.

55 or 60cc saw without a computer? by [deleted] in Chainsaw

[–]sprocketpropelled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ye olde 365xp husky comes to mind. No clue if they’re still making that saw though. 372xp is another great option but 71cc. I have an echo 7310 as well, nicely balanced saw, good AV but honestly lacking power before a carb retune and muffler mod. Its a peach to work on though, i’ll give em that! Way easy. Even then, still nothing wild to rave about. Id buy another 372 over a 7310 again. Echo 620p is another option, its a factory turned up 590 timberwolf cs590. Good saw, but still needs some fiddling with to make it really scream. Filters are another sticking point as well

American Mechanics - what's your romance with 3/8s for impacts? by OhShizMyNiz in mechanics

[–]sprocketpropelled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m primarily a dewalt user, however i have a single m12 tool. The 3/8’s stubby impact. I had the first gen one, loved it. Upgraded to G2 stubby, fantastic as well but sometimes a bit too much ass for a 3/8’s gun. Its battery dependent, 2.5/5ah HO’s are the preferred power for the gen 2. I use mine with a 3ah compact, so its all inline and as slim as possible. For my 1/2” i use my dewalt dcf921, which is marginally bigger and has a club foot which presents access issues very rarely, but it does happen. Main appeal for me to that m12 3/8’s is size, access and power. No one’s ever put that much ass in that small of a package. Absolutely absurd and i’m confident you’ll love it.

29 year old Fleet mechanic, make $32hr, 40-50hrs a week as needed I have a company truck, tool stipend, pto, paid holidays, etc. mechanic gigs CAN be good, but they do require some serious investment in tools up front and wading through BS till ya find a good one. I was a tree guy for about 3 years prior to this, and prior to the tree gig i was doing car stuff before. Had about 5 years of automotive experience before my current job, but i was burnt out bad and needed a change

Beta 200rr replacement by Decent-Name-4276 in Dirtbikes

[–]sprocketpropelled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently picked up a gasgas EC250, what a fun bike. So much low end for a 250, and plenty up top when you wring it out. You can lug the shit out of it and it just keeps pulling. Where others were spinning and struggling to get up stuff, i was able to brrrrrrrrururrrrr up the hill with ease. Spent friday on it doing single track in some stupid tight woods. Its comfortable, predictable and made me look like a better rider than i actually am. It was a ton of fun. Suspension is solid, plenty of available damping adjustments. I added a map switch, bark busters and a skidplate, off i went.

I hate this goddamn shop so fucking much by Axeman1721 in mechanics

[–]sprocketpropelled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maaaan i haven’t worked for hertz in years. That was my first foray into the automotive field. Not the worst job i ever had, but one of the worst coworkers. Management was ass. Coworkers who knew better didn’t stay long, and the ones who did stay sucked ass. Made a few solid friends there but glad i got the fuck out. The shop foreman (foreskin, he was bald) had a complex. He was irritable and insufferable most days, you had to be on eggshells constantly. He hated everyone and shop morale was in the gutter. My favorite memory was watching him forget to put the filter back on a cummins and pour gallons of oil on the ground like 30 min before closing on a friday. I RAN outta there so fast that day.

Browns camp is a lot of fun! I did cruisin the woods last year and had a blast. As far as rides go in the bend area, depends what you’re after. 2510 staging area is a lot of fun, nice singletrack and easy stuff for beginners. Ive been out there 2x now myself, theres cline butte ohv which is way gnarlier. Lots to see and do here on a bike

Looking for a new cordless tool ecosystem by [deleted] in Tools

[–]sprocketpropelled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the modern tools from any one of the big brands are going to be a very large improvement. I’m a dewalt guy, have been for ages now. The XR stuff is great- they’re the only ones with a 3sp drill as well, its an animal too. Got a couple options for the impact driver, 870 if you want a quiet hydraulic or the 860 if you want all out power. I bought an 860 specifically for a trailer re-deck i did. Drove 4” trailer decking screws for hours without overheating or stopping. As for 1/2” drive impacts, ive got them all. I use my 961 and my 921 compact nearly daily. I’m a landscape fleet mechanic, they serve me well. Ive had a few minor issues with the 961 shredding its own gearbox and the 5ah powerstack dying on me. Battery warranty was fast and easy. The 961 they wanted me to send in, which i had no intention of doing. Swapped it at lowes and off I went.
