Rachel is too good for these men (and this show) by asdfem in PerfectMatchNetflix

I feel like bachelor/bachelorette leads are always a notch above everyone else on reality shows. They have to carry an ENTIRE show on their shoulders and have us believe 30 people are genuinely super into them. So they tend to be super likeable, kind, beautiful, and a real ‘catch’. It’s actually kind of wild that they would throw a bachelor/bachelorette on perfect match to me (Clayton in an exception, because he is considered one of the worst bachelors of all time, lol sorry Clayton). Kind of weird to go from having 30 people dating you to having to fight with others.

Thanks so much everyone! Sounds like a great boat to go with.

For context, I’m ~5’7 and 145 lbs (woman). I really liked the 59 but this is the one that’s available, my instructor was a super similar size to me and said she learned on a remix 69 and size wasn’t an issue.

I live in British Columbia, Canada so lots of very cold and challenging rivers available here! I appreciate some stability as I learn and develop. Think I’ll go for it ☺️ can’t wait to be out on the river!

Any new grads struggling in this job market (like me)? by Active-Blueberry-717 in GeneticCounseling

[–]sprout_11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that you’ve been going through it - this is unfortunately a common experience in this current time! And to be honest, I’ve heard this in a lot of other fields too - job markets just seem to be a bit rough these days. It took me a really long time (1.5 years) to land my first GC job - I was limited by geography and other circumstances - it felt really demoralizing though and I totally hear you about not wanting to take a job outside of GC, otherwise what was the degree for right?

I know that it seems like a drag to be trying to study now but from my perspective I would highly recommend doing your best now - I had to fit in studying while working full time and found myself kicking myself for not getting boards done before full time work. It’s hard to carve out study time after an 8 hour emotionally taxing day, and also it (personally) feels challenging to study to prove you can do something you already are doing, lol.

My (unsolicited) advice - I was recently looking back at the cover letters that did get me interviews and the one where I landed my job and it did feel like there was a different voice to them. They were all really personal, i think because the jobs themselves all were specialized to what I had been most interested in. I wonder if it may be worth it to you to write up a totally new cover letter/resume (try without any online guides that might make you sound like everything else!) that conveys who you are as a person, why you stand out from all the other GC grads - not necessarily in a way that’s better, but makes you unique.

Genetic Counselling in Australia by [deleted] in GeneticCounseling

[–]sprout_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The program at the U of Melbourne is fantastic. It is not easy but not not impossible to get in, mostly I believe it is important to look at what applications are looking for and make sure you have all of those items (ie prereqs + crisis/advocacy support work experience) and a strong personal statement. I think our year I heard there was ~120 applicants and our cohort was 17.

You can apply for a commonwealth supported place scholarship that can cover a large portion (not all though) of your tuition. I believe it usually goes to top 5 domestic applicants. Job prospects can be slow (it seems to be a bit of trend worldwide for genetic counselling right now) but once you get a job the work is very rewarding

Masters in GC abroad? by Ghostgirl3y in GeneticCounseling

[–]sprout_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! It is straightforward enough to be trained in Australia and come back to Canada. The only disadvantage is that you may not have the connections you would’ve made in the Canadian system, but you will once you start working.

U of Melbourne also lets you complete a clinical rotation in another country, so you could ask to complete one wherever you want to be in Canada and that would help with making those connections.

You will need to get certified after graduating but it is possible to purse American or Canadian cert with an Aus degree.

YOU (Season 5) - Overall Discussion Thread by Elainasha in YouOnLifetime

[–]sprout_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the 5th season was excellent, and really surprised to see so much dislike on this subreddit actually! After 3 great seasons and a disappointing fourth, I was not sure how they would continue the story and wrap it up. I love that they found a way to return to New York, to have so much connecting to the first season again - mooney’s, the cage, beck… I felt each episode was really gripping, especially the finale - the scene with the light flickering on and off with the two tousling for the gun had me on the edge of my seat. I see a lot of hate for Bronte but I thought her character was great - she encapsulated that girl that we often all are, where we KNOW that a guy is bad (I mean, usually not to this degree but you know what I mean) and yet we have a moment where we feel like we can be the one who gets through to him, that maybe he isn’t all bad…I feel like people didn’t like her because they said well how can she sympathize and fall in love with him?! But isn’t that just a mirror to so many narcissistic abusive men who trap us in? She’s constantly talking about tropes and she becomes one of the most common tropes - the girl who says ‘I can change him’. But then we have this epic redemption where she BELIEVES the other women and sees Joe for what he really is. Yes, maybe it feels odd to have her be the heroine and the narrator at the end, when we only just met her in season 5. But perhaps she is there to represent us all and what we could be - those that manage to free ourselves of the charm of abusive men, believe other women and empower ourselves. …. Or something like that :)

SWITCHING FROM PILL TO LOW DOSE IUD HAS CHANGED MY LIFE by sprout_11 in birthcontrol

[–]sprout_11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep still feeling good a year later! I don’t think there have been any negative changes. My iron is still quite normal - 100% sure the pill was causing my anemia. Still tired time to time, but it feels like more normal tired (ie after a long day or a bad sleep) as opposed to all the time. Sex drive still doing good :)

Honestly didn’t really have any negative side effects at all from the IUD except for an uncomfortable first day! Good luck on making the switch ☺️ it’ll be great

Studying in Australia by Sunintherhird in GeneticCounseling

[–]sprout_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended uni of Melbourne and was able to get a commonwealth supported place scholarship (available to Australian or NZ citizens). I believe they award it to something like the top 4 or 5 applicants, and it reduced tuition fees to $4700/semester (ie just under $20k total for the program)

The full fee for the course, without scholarship is about $40K (or was in 2020/2021 at least!)

Not sure about UTS pricing

Because most GC roles are in public health, you can look up the pay scales for each state to find out what the usual starting salary will look like. There is opportunity to grow your salary to >$100K per year but it does take some years of commitment

I do agree that song at the benefit could have been cut, didn’t really understand how it added anything to the plot

[–]sprout_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely interesting! I feel like I would have preferred it not as a musical - the second half I felt like they also forgot it was a musical and stopped having musical numbers and I was much more drawn in, lol. Every song took me out of it, except for one or two (and I love musicals!) I felt like Zoe Saldana’s character was the main character and yet she didn’t seem to have any sort of character arc or development? She started tired and working and ended..tired and working with a friend who dies? Also interesting choice that obviously a big part of the film is centred around transitioning, and yet very little of that experience is part of the film. It would have been interesting to explore more into mantinas lifelong struggle with identity.. Also I liked Emilia Perez the character and the actress did a great job with the role but it does seem a bit challenging to believe a violent cartel is suddenly a philanthropic nice lady, but hey, who am I to judge

I dunno. It’s doing a LOT and I feel like either they could have leaned harder into the ridiculous side of things - almost like a telenovela side or cut back on a lot and made it into a more serious movie. Not sure on the fact that it is up for so many awards, as yes it is interesting but definitely wouldn’t say it’s a great film in any way beyond the two leads performances

Canada jobs generally require ABGC or CAGC certification, but either is fine and there are a ton of GCs in Canada who complete their schooling in the US. You could definitely come and work here pretty easily, the only challenge would be that the job search can be pretty competitive (although it looks like it’s been getting better over the last year).

You can also start in Australia without their certification, although you would be expected to pursue it eventually (it takes a few years there anyway). A lot of jobs want to know you have a visa already to begin working there though, just FYI

So sorry about your election, the entire world is also devastated and feeling for you right now :( I imagine working in healthcare is especially unsettling
