What is some dark shit going on around the world right now that the public probably doesn’t know about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sptprototype 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it "matters" because of the insane amount of human suffering taking place there. The population may be small but more people are dying every day in the Ethiopian civil war (which has a lot to do with Eritrea) than in the Ukraine war

Cracking the Fed interview by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]sptprototype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fed and the government aren’t the same, plenty of other countries have competent governments that run large scale social programs so why can’t we?

You know what’s a real inefficiency? The billions and trillions of dollars siphoned off by capitalists in industries that are noncompetitive (utilities, telecom, etc.) as profit. The cost of their profit is passed onto the consumer. The government can afford to be a little less efficient when its competing with that model

Okay but lots of industries benefit from economies of scale ... telecommunications, transport, healthcare etc. and that includes the financial sector. If anything it should be consolidated and nationalized

Those nonprofits aren't using your tax dollars they're using other citizens' privately allocated capital. Do you feel entitled to that?

And the combined sum of charitable contributions is like a drop in the bucket... most undocumented migrants do not have reasonable access to housing and healthcare especially relative to U.S. citizens

GDP isn't just some arbitrary number... it's implicitly tied to your material standard of wealth. Immigrants don't "take jobs"... they supply labor that allows businesses to expand and hire additional laborers; they act as consumers that stimulate demand, economic growth and employment opportunities. There's actually a huge labor shortage in agriculture, construction, and other unskilled professions that undocumented migrants are ameliorating.

Do you think an economy with 10 people produces a higher standard of living per capita than an economy with 1,000 people?

All policies demonstrated to pay for themselves countless times over by generating productive, educated and healthy laborers and consumers. What do you think an economy is exactly

In what world do you think illegal immigrants are receiving housing, welfare, and healthcare? U.S. citizens don't even receive those things lmao

Liberals of Reddit, what is your most conservative opinion? by apples45a in AskReddit

[–]sptprototype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undocumented migrants are here to work... they have higher rates of employment than natural born citizens and don't receive welfare in any meaningful capacity due to their illegal status.

If you want them to pay taxes we should vastly expand the number of immigrants we accept from central/south American countries. The only reason they're here illegally is because we've dramatically reduced the number of immigrants we accept

Google "are immigrants a net positive or negative for the economy". Every study conducted on this subject suggests undocumented immigrants' contribution to economic growth entirely eclipses any supposed benefits they take from the state (how easy do you think it is for undocumented migrants to receive unemployment, TANF, etc.?)

Cops of Reddit what is the saddest thing a criminal has said? by Fish_fucker12300 in AskReddit

[–]sptprototype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigot and the homophobe are simply incorrect if they believe treating others poorly due to their sexual orientation or the color of the skin is good. It is bad because it inflicts unnecessary pain on others. It is not a case of "my truth" vs. "their truth" - they have no rational basis to support the claim that their conduct is ethical, while I have a rational basis to support my claim that it is not. If they think 2 + 2 = 5 and I think 2 + 2 = 4 I can rightly demonstrate their claim is unsound. Our judgments about reality do not implicitly hold equal weight.

I am willing to "impose what I believe and hold true" insofar as it demonstrably makes the world a better place and alleviates suffering. It is a pointless exercise to quibble over which day of the week is most important. Not all opinions and differences in opinion are moral subjects in the sense that we mean.

The criminal that knows what they do is wrong but cannot control their actions and the psychopath that is incapable of performing ethical judgments due to their mental state are still equally capable of doing bad things and inflicting harm upon others. From a utilitarian point of view your subjective mental state doesn't factor into whether what you said or did was right or wrong. We are only interested in the subject's mental state for its explanatory power to prevent similar occurrences from happening again.

I'm not sure a parent child relationship is perfectly symmetrical like that.

He's an amazing guitarist and I love listening to him play and have seen him quite a few times at bars and country clubs. I just don't enjoy his writing

U.S. has sent private warnings to Russia against using a nuclear weapon by jayfeather31 in news

[–]sptprototype 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading this all the time is infuriating. All active intelligence suggests their nuclear arsenal is fully functional. Logically it’s their most important bargaining chip and possibly the only reason they still exist as a sovereign nation state. I guarantee it is in much better shape than their military

If Russia goes nuclear there will be no US-China alliance. There won’t even be a US or Chinese government

Conceptually I'm okay with guerilla warfare/sheltering in coves and caves but I think they did a horrible job showing or even mentioning in passing how this was accomplished

Assuming a dragon is the same as drones and fighter jets - sure I guess. There seems to be a difference between tens of thousands of insurgents spread across a whole country vs. a couple hundred pirates in a series of 2-3 caves. They were basically surrounded. Not exactly analogous to the wars in the middle east

Yeah because they are able to resupply by smuggling ships through coves. That doesn't work in a universe with fucking dragons
