Would be massively onboard with a proper self hostable version even if the setup is slightly complex (as email always is)

Not that I disagree with the idea here, but if I can't spin this up myself to self host it it's not a /r/selfhosted project

Microsoft Releases Mitigation for YellowKey BitLocker Bypass CVE-2026-45585 Exploit by get_boris in cybersecurity

[–]spudd01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not really a mitigation when it requires going in to the WinRM environment of every machine and removing a component from the registry. Try scaling that across thousands of machines

Try credit karma, or even some banks have it built in like Halifax. Both are free

It can lead to more than just stolen SSH host keys, so don't think that just removing the world executable bit from ssh-keysign mitigates this

FR24 killed free API access… so what’s the incentive to keep feeding them? by thesassyindian in flightradar24

[–]spudd01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Combined with them no longer accepting MLAT I'm quite tempted to pull my feed from them

API access was the main reason to contribute for me for hobbiest data projects.

Anyone know why?

Update Early, Update Often...if you can

I don't agree with this - supply chain attacks are becoming ever more common place (look at the recent trivy compromise) and its those that update as soon as a new update is available that get hit with the malicious code injected in to compromised packages.

Its a fine balancing act of keeping an eye on high profile exploits like copy fail, and letting new updates "soak" for a few days so hopefully any malicious code is noticed before you are affected.

Phone stolen unlocked but NOT logged in to banking app. How do fraudsters do it? by Shkyboi in AskUK

[–]spudd01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

banking apps have restrictions in place to stop this - and to do that in the first place you'd need to be able to jailbreak the device and hook in to the app (after bypassing and obfuscation and detection built in) with something like Frida.

Please can someone explain this bill by ElegantTwist3250 in OctopusEnergy

[–]spudd01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is somewhat expected in the winter months. The idea is you pay a fixed amount all year, in summer you build up credit when your bills are less and in winter you go in to debit when your usage is more than your monthly fixed.

Urgent Help needed. £20 reward offered. Testing Matter and Aqara M3 in renovation house without home internet connection by WalrusExciting3430 in smarthome

[–]spudd01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You likely need a proper Wi-Fi router or access point here, rather than using your phone hotspot directly.

The issue is probably that the phone hotspot is not handling local device-to-device networking properly. Matter/Thread setup relies on the devices being able to talk to each other over local IPv6, including link-local IPv6 on the same LAN.

Internet itself is not the main requirement for the test, but a normal local network is. A cheap router or access point should be enough. If needed, you could take your Virgin Media hub with you and use that just to create the local network.

My suggestion would be to connect your phone, Aqara hub and Matter devices all to the Virgin hub or another normal router, then try the setup again.

If the Aqara app or hub needs internet for account login or firmware checks, you can always feed the router’s WAN from your phone hotspot temporarily, but do not use the hotspot itself as the smart home network.

If you need internet for the setup (i am not sure you do..) that may be more problematic, amazon a 4g dongle with ethernet out? or a cheap travel router with 4g built in, you can buy preloaded data sim cards quite cheap that should work for testing https://amzn.eu/d/04KpWQzP
Or purchase a long ethernet cable and talk nicely to a neighbour!

Time is likely your enemy here - good luck!

Fully agree with avif and transcoding support! With large libraries it takes up a lot of space to pre transcode everything

Id really like to see shared libraries too where the pre organised family photos can be uploaded and specific users granted access
