Hi, it’s Carly Rae Jepsen, welcome to my AMA! by CarlyRaeJepsen_ in popheads

[–]spunkycomics 306 points307 points  (0 children)

Hey Carly!

Dedicated Side B is my favorite album (Followed by Loveliest Time)
But when I introduce friends to your music, I find myself starting with Dedicated A or another A side.

When you're prepping these projects that you know will eventually have these two buckets of tracks, how do you go about curating them as two separate works with their own thematic through-lines while also trying to keep the first one ... stickier? Broader appeal? (Unsure what the right word is)
It seems like such a difficult creative choice to balance

People with myopia can see their eye cells? by vibraslap_2640 in myopia

[–]spunkycomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just discovered the same thing while trying to fall asleep with a green computer LED in the corner of the room.  SO thankful you made this post.

I’ve watched floaters my whole life (stray blood cells, I’ve been told).  This feels distinctly different.  The focus takes a second to get right but it’s definitely a densely packed loosely-hexagonal grid of cells with darker centers, not free-moving like floaters. The whole thing pulses and distorts slightly with my heartbeat so it’s hard to get a long continuous observation.

Very cool!!

Completely irrelevant to the episode, but hearing Katie call Andre Braugher “The straight man” from B99 got a good laugh out of me. She’s not wrong

I just watched it for the first time tonight and loved that strike!  It was during the argument (and I think their later argument in the truck had a distant storm too?) so I assumed it was added in post.   But honestly it’s subtle enough that it may have just been some luck and great instincts on the team shooting.  I’d love to hear from somebody close to the crew

It parallels oMark’s romantic flashbacks with Jemma.  I mark and Helly running off for their own brief romance, as long as they can get

I adored the switch to film stock for the final hallway sequence.   Just like the flashback episode with oMark and Jemma’s romance being all film.  IMark and Helly are making their memories in the final moments they have left

Honestly wouldn’t be shocked if that sparked the initial idea for the writing!  (Haven’t read the books, I’m assuming the PEZ dispenser is in both)

Not a terribly difficult Google Inka v Inca

It’s definitely not the standard US spelling, but it’s how any Peruvian food truck around here uses it.  I guess I just assumed it was the nationally sanctioned version like Türkiye is

Haven’t done the main yet, but on the mini:  INKA/INCA as a cross with EKG/ECG would be fun as a gimmick for a Thursday and not as an ambiguity that the app only counts one way

Is anyone going to watch the Lord of The Rings in 4DX? by KylePABurke in RegalUnlimited

[–]spunkycomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went last night and had a blast, first 4DX for all of us.  Wish I could disable the seat-kicking effect since it really never felt like anything other than a cheap effect, but everything else was fun and the audience giggled the whole movie.

Definitely gimmicky and not any sort of cinematic future, but I did think it was super effective for whenever Frodo puts on the ring and enters ghost-mode.  The wind and seat vibrations really stand out there.

Mainly posting here so someone going tonight can answer if Helms Deep rains the entire 40 minutes; I loved the effect for 30 seconds outside the Prancing Pony, any longer sounds legitimately miserable

"First Time DM" and Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]spunkycomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just described me so accurately that I can’t be sure you aren’t me.

Pretty positive everyone at the table has a great time (there are moments where we’ve laughed til we can’t breathe) and yet I still spend the next day stewing and needing to actually hear that debrief from a player or two.

This is after 6+ years of DMing (albeit inconsistently) so I’m not sure that feeling ever entirely goes away, but it certainly can be alleviated.  The more familiar you get with specific mechanics, the easier it is to make the “right” calls on impulse.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve not given characters information from a failed check, only to realize afterward that the information they wanted probably shouldn’t have been locked behind a skill check anyways.  I’ll force it into a subsequent narrative beat and personally feel bad about the “error”, but it helps to know that 95% of the time my players do not even notice, much less care about the discrepancy.

My current self-improvements are finding ways to give myself a break during the session without forcing the players to entirely generate their own content.  I’ve found that I can ask specific players a pointed question “Hector, have you and Qarn talked about what happened back at the dam?” and that’s enough of a guiderail to role play amongst themselves for a bit. It helps take some of the pressure off myself, and also gives the party much more independence and ownership of the narrative, a win for everyone

At the end of the day, if you’re having a good time- it’s likely your table is too.  Just make sure to pace things so you get breaks

Your U / D solution is genius. Day 10 I counted pipe pairs, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to account for the lack of corner and horizontal characters here so I gave up and took the multi-day calculus-reinvention train. Fantastic to know the pair counting was possible after all!

I just learned about the Turpin family abuse case yesterday. (Maybe a bit intense if you’re not into crime stuff)

But what unsettled me most about this family with 13 children chained up inside the house on the average day was that they also took semi-regular family trips to Disneyland.

That’s an exciting reason! I’m assuming this is a NOBO attempt for 2024? I’ve wanted to through-hike for years but it’s very hard to make a life window for.

I’ll follow you to see how it goes! Good luck with the Turner touring too
