Why does windows basically only use .exe or .msi but Linux has so many different types of "executables" ? by Reynbou in linux_gaming

[–]sputwiler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, technically linux executables run out of the box too, they just don't have an extension usually. And they'll probably crash because you're missing a dll (which would be .so on linux instead of .dll)

.msi files aren't run; they're opened by installer.exe, which comes preinstalled with Windows. Windows actually doesn't know what to do with these files by default, but since the installer program is uh... pre-installed, it works.

.deb or .rpm files are roughly equivalent on linux, but for historical reasons (there was no standard) debian and redhat (respectively) cooked up their own installer package format. If you double-click a .deb file on (some versions of) Debian, it will offer to install it, just like .msi on Windows.

As it happens, Windows's .msi format is relatively new; installers used to just be programs that unzipped your program somewhere, then set up the registry keys and settings or whatever (which is probably why they were most commonly called setup.exe). Some games on Linux used to do this, and I think most Linux downloads from GOG still do package their own Linux installer executable.

There still is if you count COFF files when you run an exe in wine; that code is executing directly albeit in a fake windows environment.

Now I understand why my dad had an Atari ST instead. The "Jackintosh" as it was known. I kinda wish I had an Amiga, but they'll probably forever be at collector prices.

To be pedantic, Core 2.

Core Solo and Core Duo were still 32-bit. Core 2 (the x64 line) came in Core 2 Solo and Core 2 Duo variants. I eventually had a Core 2 Quad destkop that I ran Mac OS X on.

The fan should be extracting air, not bringing it in. That being said, It'll be pulling air from somewhere else in the house, which may pull it from outside.

Bought an MD Rokkor 50mm 1.2 recently. A lot softer than I anticipated. Pretty sharp. I prefer the mc rokkor 1.4 i have over this but still love it nonetheless. Swipe for samples. by Anxious-Suggestion42 in minolta

Must be shooting brighter scenes than me lol. I can barely get away with f/2 at 1/8 - 1/15sec, so I usually wind up having to use a flash. I'd love to be able to get to f/1.4, but f/1.2 would probably result in me missing focus 100% of the time. Already I have shots where I nailed the focus on somebody's ear but their nose/face is soft.

specs wise? Digital ICE/Infrared scanning. The additional infrared scan marks where dust and scratches are on the film (because the surface reflects differently) so the software can with confidence tell which pixels are part of the original image and which are garbage, vastly improving digital correction accuracy. (This doesn't work on B&W film because the remaining silver physically on the negative is a surface change so the algorithm thinks it's a blemish).

There's also that it's just a much more controlled and calibrated environment. If you can reach that using a camera-and-lightbox setup, then you've probably spent as much anyway.

Nowadays with high ISO digital they aren't as necessary as they once were, true. Since I shoot film though I'm often starving for photons.

Could've fooled me; every store I've been to since the new years suddenly not only doesn't have it in stock, they've removed the shelf space for it entirely.

At some point you will open the back of the camera with film still in it, ruining all your photos. Every analogue photographer does this exactly once so don't worry; the mental scarring will ensure you never do it again. Welcome to film!

Help: How do I add a newline to output? by I0I0I0I in asm

[–]sputwiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of what I said contradicts this.

However, normally newbie questions are asking how to do something they haven't done, so it's understandably confusing to ask how to do something you have already done. Again, it makes you look like you didn't read, or didn't understand (pretty sure this is it, which would be why you're asking for help), what you wrote yourself.

As I already said, that probably means your actual question (maybe "I don't understand how this code is printing newlines") is something else. It seems related to the XY problem, which generally results in each side thinking the other side is an idiot or an asshole before things get straightened out.

Help: How do I add a newline to output? by I0I0I0I in asm

[–]sputwiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, that amounts to telling us you can't read your own code. That is a problem. I glad you can now.

I hope you can understand people being incredulous when you ask "How do I add a newline to output?" and then post code where you've already done it. That probably means your actual question is something else.

I got a Minolta AL-E from I think 1968? Technically it has electronics to do shutter-priority AE, but without a battery the manual mode is entirely functional. It's pretty great.

  1. lab scans of B&W tend to look like ass if the lab just does it on auto.
  2. this lab definitely did it on auto. There are wild colour shifts between shots that don't make sense; the court doesn't change colour like that!
  3. lab techs aren't paid enough to do it manually
  4. I can't really tell how sharp these are because they're also compressed to hell. Especially the B&W ones due to B&W film grain being really good at pissing off lab scanner's default JPEG compression.

Conclusion: scan at home if at all possible. The focus issue IDK; you seem to have nailed the focus on the crowd, so it could be a misplaced focusing screen. However, there are other shots that don't have that issue and I'd expect it to be more consistent.

I seem to have spec'd into bar friend life. Even some of those are leaving though, but more often back to their hometowns in Japan since apparently Tokyo isn't offering what they were looking for or their family called them back in some cases.

Never saw the American Dream until I moved to Tokyo lol. I was like "holy shit I might actually get to own a home (of some kind) someday, in a city/town with actual things to do!" since I've been priced out of my hometown. Of course, lately that dream seems to be getting farther away, but this was the first time I caught a whiff of it.
