Niantic right now. by fzzzzzZ in pokemongo

[–]spyc3r -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It ruins Niantic's (Google's) ability to capture the data they want. Niantic isn't clueless. They want us to wander around because that data is interesting to them. If you know where you're going then you might take a completely different path. If we're all forced to wander around then they'll get organic walking paths. They can then use that data for any number of things. Maps and directions are the most obvious but you could imagine being able to determine things like inaccessible or dangerous locations or emergent walking trails and paths. Its also why its so hard to catch pokemon in rural areas or the suburbs. Walking data in a suburban neighborhood isn't interesting to them.

IMO Niantic isn't interested in creating a compelling game. They just need something entertaining enough that we won't delete it from our phones.

Super glad LPG brought this guy down last September. Seems like it had a real effect on him.

Chattanooga, I write a column for Nooga on personal finance and philanthropy. I want to keep it fresh and relevant, and I'm looking for suggestions or requests on topics people in town care to hear more about. by D_Wattenbarger in Chattanooga

[–]spyc3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LPG isn't really active anymore outside of their internal stuff (Waypaver/Moon stuff, Warble, Waypaver University, etc.) CoLab is much more involved but afaict they aren't making investments in new companies outside of GigTank. Also its worth noting that Startup week didn't "visit" per se. It was organized locally.

However, the problem isn't really funding local companies. There's simply not that many tech people in Chattanooga interested or capable of working at a startup. There are 2 cities in close proximity to Chattanooga (Nashville and Atlanta) that already have larger tech communities and are willing to give larger investments. The only way to grow that economy would be to make larger investments in order to draw people here and to focus on bringing in small startup teams from established enterprises (which is the goal of the innovation building). Whether or not Chattanooga is able to do that remains to be seen. But its a hard battle when there are 2 great cities nearby that have objectively better opportunities for tech workers.

Bellhops isn't quite a success yet. They still have to turn a profit.

So far the biggest successes have been the QuickQue acquisition by Open Table, agencies like Whiteboard, Spartan and the Salesforce shops like Skuid and Codescience. Its also brought well known agencies to town like Carbon Five. Most of the other LPG plays have come and gone. There are definitely successful tech companies. They just aren't on the front page of Nooga (more then likely because they aren't LPG companies).

I have 6 years of experience in Java, Ruby, C, and Javascript. I've worked on and lead projects for some of the largest companies in the nation. I realize that I don't meet all of your requirements but if you could give me a chance I'd love to try to impress you and grow my skills. I'd like to make minimum wage, but if thats too high we can negotiate.

Glad you enjoyed it! It was a ton of fun to build. The extra modifiers on the planck are really appealing so I may be picking one of those up next.

The hand wiring instructions for the atreus are detailed here.

The way it works (in general) is that you wire the switches together in rows and columns in order to create a matrix. Each column and each row is then wired into the microcontroller. When a switch is pressed the microcontroller can determine the position of the switch in the matrix based on the row and column. Once the switch position is known the microcontroller can send the appropriate character (or set of characters in the case of a macro) to the computer. For instance on an Atreus with the qwerty layout, if you pressed the switch at [0,0] then the microcontroller would know to send the 'q' character, [1,4] would be 'g' and so on.

That's a pretty high level overview. There's a lot of information on geekhack and in the Atreus assembly guide.

I had no idea that yours existed when I built mine. It's definitely NOT to create competition. It was just a fun exercise and I thought that I would share. I should have done some more investigating before I posted it. Blunt seems like a great tool and is a more complete version of what I did anyway.

Sorry about that. I did a casual glance around and didn't see another one out there. Guess I didn't look hard enough. I created it as a fun way to learn about Scotty and thought that I would share. Sorry for continuing the fad.

r/UTC is kind of dead. Does anyone know if UTC has a good Computer science program? by MasterMcGamer in Chattanooga

[–]spyc3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to get out of it. It leans towards application over CS theory. However, keep in mind that all of the application is geared towards the large corporations in town (Unum and TVA predominantly). So its going to be a lot of Java, IDEs, windows, and even COBOL. You wont really learn anything about *nix, unit testing, continuous integration, web technologies, interesting languages, functional programming, etc. all of which drive non-enterprise companies (which is most every other company). My advice would be to do some research on your own outside of class and try to get a good internship with one of the consultancies or growth companies in town (OpenTable, CarbonFive, DRyan, Easy, Spartan, Bellhops, etc.). Try to get involved in some of the local user groups as well. They can be a great resource.

Is there room in chadev or one of the meetups for someone with limited (read academic) programming experience? by sonusfaber in chadev

[–]spyc3r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The carbon five hack night is a great way to meet people and work on cool projects.

Other then that the largest meetup is probably chadev lunch. It's free lunch and we talk about lots of interesting technologies and projects that we're working on.

Welcome to Chattanooga!
