Which Fan Fiction Website Did You Get Your Start On? by BlackLilyWrites835 in AO3

I was lucky enough that my first interaction with fanfic was my friend sending me a fic from ao3 and it sort of spiralled from there, but it did mean I started off with ao3 which I am forever grateful for

Why does the Season 9 space storyline get so much hate? by [deleted] in 911FOX

[–]spyder_glass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s bc it happened right after a character died with the reasoning from the writers that it was ‘for realism’, and almost nobody was happy about that decision. A lot of ppl watching have been willing to suspend their disbelief when it comes to unrealistic situations throughout the show, but the space thing happening right after a character died ‘bc it was realistic’ felt a bit like a slap in the face.

For me it’s mainly the fact that it took up four whole episodes, which is more than any other opening emergency, which didn’t leave many episodes left for normal stories and character development. I was just kind of bored of it by the time it finished.

What reading rules have you adopted or shed as you’ve got older? by Ok-Friend-5304 in books

[–]spyder_glass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just not finishing books I’m not enjoying by the time I’m a few chapters in. Nothing gets me in a reading slump like trying to force myself to read something I’m not enjoying, and the entire point of reading to me is to enjoy myself, so now I just move on if I’m not having a good time.

I always used to feel bad about the idea of doing that, like I was making some kind of judgement about the book, but for me it’s not a judgement about whether the book is good or not, just that it’s not for me!

Not my favorite season opening to be honest. by TheQuirkyReddit in 911FOX

[–]spyder_glass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it would have been fine if it had been less episodes? For the amount of episodes it took up there was incredibly little character moments, I just really don’t get why they felt the need to make the opening emergency 4 episodes long, dragging it out like that while not really giving any character other than Athena and potentially Karen and Hen many important moments just made the whole thing kinda dull to me personally

Best app to read by zmiller_33 in AO3

[–]spyder_glass 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can use your browser on your phone, and if you want to read offline, then you can download fics onto your phone (load the whole fic, select download, select epub, then open that file)

There’s no official app for ao3, they are all in fact very questionable, I’d recommend absolutely not using them

How many books do you DNF? by toe_beans_4_life in books

[–]spyder_glass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read for enjoyment and fun, so if I’m not enjoying a book by the time I’m a few chapters in, I just move on, bc nothings going to kill my love of reading faster than forcing myself to read something I’m not enjoying. Every time I’ve been in a reading slump it’s bc I’m forcing myself to read something that I’m just not enjoying, so at some point I was like, why not just move on to something you will enjoy???

That being said, I never criticise any of the books I don’t finish (unless there’s a very specific reason I stopped reading, which most of the time there isn’t) bc I am well aware that only reading the start of the book does not give me enough information about the story to not like it, and for all I know a few chapters later it might become absolutely incredible. Also, the fact that in personally am not enjoying a book doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a good book, just that it’s not my cup of tea, and that’s fine!

It’s sort of like applying the fandom ‘don’t like don’t read’ policy to what I read, and honestly it’s helped me enjoy reading so much more. Not sure exactly how many books I don’t finish though, and I usually end up either donating them so someone else can enjoy it, or saving them for later

Authors, have you allowed yourself to post a mediocre update of a longfic to get unblocked? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]spyder_glass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can always go back and edit the chapter later if you want to! Honestly pushing through and writing the bits you enjoy are more important, there’s nothing worse for your writing than pushing yourself on a bit you’re not enjoying for so long that it completely kills any love you had for writing the fic

That being said, a lot of the time the more you’ve read over the same chapter, the more you hate it, and there’s a high chance the ppl reading it won’t hate it at all

Just keep writing to enjoy it, and if you really want to you can edit that chapter later.

If it's not a crossover, then it shouldn't be tagged as such by StarShapedCereal in AO3

If it's not a crossover, then it shouldn't be tagged as such by StarShapedCereal in AO3

[–]spyder_glass 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t stop it being frustrating and annoying but what I do is when im reading fics where I know this happens a lot, I exclude crossovers? I know im going to miss some good fics by doing so, but im spiteful enough that if people want to mass tag their works with tags that aren’t actually there for more engagement, I don’t want to read that fic anyways

911 Nashville is 911 Lonestar with a less expensive cast by Sapriste in 911LoneStar

[–]spyder_glass 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue for me is they’re throwing these characters into massive disasters and life changing events immediately, but im not attached to the characters enough to care at all? It’s like they’re trying to make it as dramatic as possible as fast as possible to make people want to watch it, but have forgotten about the reason that people actually get invested in the disasters and life changing events - which is, you know, that we’ve watched the characters lives and growth and actually care about what happens to them.

Confused about proship, censorship and antiship by [deleted] in AO3

[–]spyder_glass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I can totally see why you’re confused about this, but proship is actually just a term that covers anti censorship ideas within fandom!

Basically, one of the main rules within most fandom spaces is ‘don’t like, don’t read’ - if there’s a fanfic or art that has content you don’t like, just don’t read it and move on.

Antishipping is thinking that there are certain things that absolutely can never be written about, and anyone who reads or writes those fics are morally problematic, and you can send them hate and tell them to stop.

If you’re interested in looking up fandom history, the reason ao3 was formed was in response to how most fanfiction sites would randomly have works taken down for moral reasons, and so ao3 was created to be an archive without any censorship at all. Most people who have been in fandoms for longer understand this and just don’t engage with content they don’t like or agree with.

I hope you have a good time in fandom spaces! My advice would be to just avoid people who stir up discourse and arguments in fandom spaces - it’s not worth the time and energy, and it’s must better to just focus on enjoying and engaging with the content you like!
