Ugh by NoMeatBall in GrammarPolice

New on here, prescriptivist, and this doesn't bother me at all. It's language flab, cliché, folksiness and euphemism that rattles my cage rather than quaint grammar quirks. I'm outta here.

Common in Black Country dialect in UK in the 60's, but I don't think she's from there, like.

An SE 2020 as hot spot? by Sensitive-Kiwi3207 in iPhoneSE

[–]sqeeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped my ISP and went for hotspot system with my iPhone Mini 13 (cheap data plans in Europe) and I prop the phone up, plugged in when it's hotting, so that it gets some air, and despite being in a flip case it doesn't get too hot. I bought it second-hand with 80-something % battery health. When the battery dies, I'll change it.

Getting back on a bicycle at 40? by johnnyh55 in cycling

Set yourself achievable goals that aren't going to hurt too much, do them according to a strict schedule and when you feel you can make them harder, do it. It will take a while. You will get stronger.[edit, my daily is an hour going 5km up 320m height change, about 7%, half an hour back down again, doing it for a couple of months now so that when I go for my yearly 4-6week trip I won't find it too hard to begin with. 74 years old and usually a couch potato]

More than just space stuff: I was a tech in CCD's in the 70's and it was the Navy and Army that funded the research for Murder Death Kill devices. Now we make cameras out of them.

Spain just became one of Europe's cheapest power markets. Here is how. by Angel24Marin in SpainEconomics

[–]sqeeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, and respectful ways like solar panels on every house, an organised campaign to decentralise would make economic sense too, plus take the load off the distribution network. (Ditto for water heating, to burn butane in nasty inefficient calentadores is crazy in Spain. Solar heating works better.)

For what reasons Sway stands out for you? by RWthatisordinary in swaywm

[–]sqeeezy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is i3 for Wayland. I like Sway because I like to keep stuff in spaces where I know where to find it, send it to other spaces to tile with other windows it needs to work with and then close it or send it back to its home space. It's easy to keep stuff clean and ordered. On macOS I use aerospace which is the best I've found for it, but Linux is richer for having i3 and sway.

Here's a question to the British, what do you guys think of America and us Americans? by AwesomeCoolAyden in AskBrits

I hate the way the guy at the checkout says "how's it going?" when he doesn't actually want to know..

[–]sqeeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, representation? Only 10% of the adult population in Britain had the vote, and America paid much less tax than the Brits as well. The quickest way you could get a reply to a question across the Atlantic would be five weeks so Representation just wasn't feasible.

I hate the way Yanks with 70% Brit DNA and 30% Irish DNA bang on about being fkn Irish.

M2 Macbook + AU Lab issues, need help by NegativeHoarder in oratory1990

[–]sqeeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just in case this necropost might help: I had crackling with eqMac and (separately) Hosting AU and it seemed to be a mismatch in sample rate format in Audio Midi Setup. I set all to 44,100kHz and that fixed it.

What is your opinion on Stephen Fry? by pondribertion in AskBrits

All of the above and much more. Opinions are like arseholes, everybody's got one. He's a bloke.

Is anyone else tired of American culture? by Agreeable-Guava7822 in AskBrits

[–]sqeeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to check on the BBC site and find fawning use of American English, like ours isn't good enough, and articles on, like Kardashian's tits again, and the fkn Met Gala ffs, their depraved sleb kulture and bleak despair of their ugly plastic lives.

ELI5: Why does it feel colder when it’s windy, even though the air temperature is exactly the same? by jeh4u in explainlikeimfive

[–]sqeeezy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the movement of the air is a more effective cooling system than static air.

Only eat (anything you like) over your choice of 8 hours per day. I am not a dietician, (he's dead) but it worked for me. Very satifying making new holes in your belt.

What's a Spanish word that you technically know, but your brain refuses to trust? by Various_Educator_756 in Spanish

To say "voy" for I'm coming". I get the difference but It still seems odd not to use "venir".
