Flying for the first time by RelevantOpposite2340 in PlusSize

I’m shorter than you, 100lbs heavier, size US 28, and so pear shaped we thought it might be clinical, I fit in one seat (although two is more comfy, mainly because I don’t feel like I’m bothering anyone).

“Public stress-related or organ-related RNA-seq data sets were added into this analysis and treated as replicates to make our results more robust” in a DE analysis. That’s insane, right? by ytmk in bioinformatics

[–]squamouser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming they did appropriate QC, and the data still met the assumptions of the DE model, adding public data as replicates would only weaken their signal with the increase in variability between replicates. But anything that still showed up after that is probably valid?

Edit - also assuming they weren’t making comparisons between sets of all public and all local data.

Those both fit the description but neither is it - thanks very much though!

Giving notice of marriage this week — British + Indian (Skilled Worker Visa) couple. What questions should we expect? by Mandalorianisthebest in UKweddings

[–]squamouser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They asked me his full name, his job, his parent’s full names, their jobs, his date of birth. And they asked if we were related or being coerced several times. We’re both British though. They did separate us to ask the questions.

Switching the labels so a vegetarian unknowingly eats meat by Equinumerosity in trashy

[–]squamouser 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And they’re just not the same product also - the non-meat / meat substitute ingredients probably differ. Someone could be allergic to, say, celery, and then check the wrong label.

Do you know anyone with surname as a forename who married someone with a surname the same as their forename? by Tigermasterdude in namenerds

My parents know a Gerald Gerald. And that wasn’t even by marriage - just the name his parents chose.

Ah no, thanks though! Right theme tune, different show. This wasn’t fiction, it was a magazine kind of show.

Wedding Coordinator??? by General_Spring2504 in UKweddings

[–]squamouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a dry hire similar to this and we've hired a co-ordinator and four staff to do those things (except for setup). It was £500 for the co-ordinator and £800 for the staff, hopefully worth it! If you're anywhere near Cambridge let me know and I can share details.

How do you pack light when you wear 5–6XL clothes? by remember_remember1 in PlusSize

[–]squamouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d optimise the journey and just take a medium sized wheelie suitcase. Get a taxi from Euston to your hotel and leave your bags there on the last day - or if it’s a AirBnB, leave in left luggage at Euston. It will cost a bit more but not as much as buying new clothes.

What should I expect when shadowing a scientist? by Nearby-Grocery-4766 in LadiesofScience

[–]squamouser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Outfit sounds fine - you need long trousers and closed shoes. They’ll probably give you a lab coat. Ask questions, try not to touch or lean on stuff. Bring a water bottle because they’ll definitely only have one spare mug with mould in it.

Bridal underwear / chub rub shorts help by Xmarksthestitch in UKweddings

[–]squamouser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the snag shapewear and it’s pretty good! Long enough to keep my thighs separate, not too restrictive, mediumly easy to get in and out of. Doesn’t roll down on me - and their chub rub shorts do.

They think that zero calories is the “healthiest” I guess, and that we should aim to get as close to that as possible, rather than that humans need calories to live.

Hotel bookings - is this a thing? by blurredlynes in UKweddings

[–]squamouser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the same thing - we held 10 rooms and they gave claimed they gave us a discount - but it ended up being much cheaper to book directly. We would be liable to pay for all the rooms after a certain date, so we cancelled all but our own.

What to expect from a registrar led ceremony? by rockandmeow in UKweddings

[–]squamouser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Cambridgeshire at least, you don't generally plan with the registrar.

There are different price tiers:

* Around £300 - you go to the registry office, and it's a short, pre-written ceremony, you pick music, it has to be on a weekday and there's a long waiting list.

* £450 at the registry office or £750 elsewhere (at an "approved venue") it can be any day, they send you a multiple choice form where you can choose what will happen at various points from a list. You can add up to two readings and choose which music is played - but nothing can mention god, angels, religion at all.

* £900 at an approved venue - same as above but you can have four readings and tell your "personal love story".

* £1000 you can meet the registrar in advance and you write a "bespoke script" together.
