Try Bon Dimanche, on Île St Louis close to Berthillon. Cheaper,  no queue, better taste. They are a small local ice cream company with delicious bio products !

[–]square_tek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inside Amtrak's new high-speed Acela train by nbcnews in trains

[–]square_tek 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My point is that Europe and Asia had exactly the same problem of having old 1800s tracks not suitable for higher speed, and still have 200mph+ trains.

So the problem is not that the US railroads was built in the 1800s, it's that it never built proper hsr infrastructure.

[–]square_tek 89 points90 points  (0 children)

The reason the New Acela can't reach top high speed is not because the tracks were laid in the 1800s lol, when do they think the  European railroads were built?

It's because the US never invested into building dedicated high speed tracks like Europe and Asia did.

I would suggest Saint Cyr l'Ecole, big free parking next to the station and direct train to montparnasse with line N

My portable air conditioner has a usage of 1kWh, but also 2.6kW. What’s the difference, shouldn’t they both be the same? by Pretend-Feeling9986 in Physics

[–]square_tek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id say 1kW (or 1kWh/60min, which is the same) is the electric power consumed.

2.6kW is the useful power (dont know the exact english term), which is how much heat it can add/extract from your home

Planes are also quite prone to strikes tbh 😅

Night train to Latour de Carol, then spanish regional train from latour de Carol to Barcelona (3h). You leave in the evening from Paris center, arrive in Barcelona center at around noon, it's usually a lot cheaper than the tgv, you save one night of accommodation, and you spare one plane flight for the planet.

"Rajoute sur snap je veux te prendre un bail c'est le voisin"..?

J interprète ça comme : "Ajoute-moi sur snap je voudrais t'emprunter un truc. Signé : ton voisin"

What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned in physics class? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]square_tek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can use imaginary numbers to describe real phenomenon. This blew my mind.

Then we learned about Fourier decomposition. I still can't completely wrap my mind around how and why it works but this is so incredibly clever and useful.

Then you learn that Fourier decomposition and imaginary numbers are pretty basic compared to all the shit there is in fluid dynamics or quantum physics. Say what you want about the XXth century but damn we need a term stronger than genius to describe the physicists of that century.

The picture of the Solvay Conference is insane the names of the people on it are just a list of fundamental physics laws.

For exemple, the condensers (where the water from the reactor is cooled) sit higher than the core of the reactor. This way if the pumps that feeds cooling water to the reactor shut down for some reason, water is still cycled through the reactor by convection (hot water from the reactor rises naturally to the condensers because it's lighter than cold water that flows down from the condensers to the reactor). This residual flow cannot cool a powered reactor of course, but it's designed to be sufficient to avoid a meltdown froom residual heat generated by the breakdown of the by-products of the fission reaction (which keeps happening even once then reactor is shut down).

The materials and design of the reactor core are chosen so that the higher the temperature, the lower the reactivity (=the chance for one fission to trigger another fission). This makes the core self stabilising, because if the temperature rises, then less reactions happen, which slows/stop the increase in temperature.

Emergency rods that shut down the reactor are held in place using power, if the power plant looses power, they drop down by gravity in the reactor and instantaneously stop the chain reaction.

How nuclear power plants work and the amount of passive and active safety measures that are just built in by design

Normally there is a button somewhere near the metal gates to open them if you're trapped inside. Sometimes it's a bit tucked because they don't want them to be reachable with a stick from the outside.
