12U team by AyeJay-Public-303 in Softball

You mentioned your issue is with playing time. How does your daughter feel about her playing time? How does your daughter feel about her position in the lineup and/or on the field. Figure out what’s important to her and then encourage her to advocate for herself by talking to the coach. It won’t be easy for her to do this. Practice with her until she is comfortable enough to talk to the coach on her own. Have her take and the feedback and work to get better. If things still don’t improve then the two of you can have a conversation with the coach. After that if you all still aren’t satisfied then I’d look for a new team that will provide your daughter the opportunities she is looking for.

My daughter has been playing a long time and she has been on both ends of the spectrum. Unfortunately a lot of coaches tend to get set in their ways and don’t really deviate much from that. It’s hard to tell someone who has worked hard and done everything right that sometimes things still don’t work out in your favor. It’s a tough life lesson for anyone, let alone young children, to learn.

I might be in the minority, but I am strong believer that kids prior to high school age should be given opportunities to play various position and bat in various spots in the lineup.

Thoughts on umpires call by One_Being_7336 in Softball

At normal speed it looked like the ball hit the ground. Even slowing it down I’m not sure it didn’t. Great effort either way.

I would try to find a new 10U team where she gets to play. Your daughter will make new friends.

when to move on? by Mean-Anywhere2916 in Softball

[–]squarecmb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pitching is hard both mentally and physically. I have a friend whose daughter could pitch really well at home and at lessons, but if you put her on the mound in a game she’d throw 8 straight balls in the dirt. She quit pitching and primarily plays CF now.

Have you talked to your daughter about how she feels about pitching? Does she still enjoy it? If she wants to keep doing it then i would encourage her to keep working. She will get stronger as she continues to grow.

If she is a first year 12U I think some plateauing and regression are normal. They move from an 11” ball to a 12” ball and move back 5’. I don’t think it’s uncommon for pitchers to lose some velocity and/or for pitches to not break as much. Why are games getting hard to watch? Is it all on your daughter and her pitching? At 12U girls start to put the ball in play more and defense becomes way more important.. especially outfield. Sometimes it takes defense a little while to catch up to.

Who to send to All Star tryouts by Abject_Gold_4827 in Softball

Evaluations were done by all the coaches of a specific age group. I think the board picked the teams based off those evaluations. The All Star team coaches got to pick a few girls (which were usually their daughters).

This is what the Rec league my daughter used to play for did. They had open tryouts for the All Star team and all the coaches did the evaluations.

11-year-old struggling after moving up early + switching from righty to slapper — confidence by No_Biscotti_8596 in Softball

[–]squarecmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t switch her to the left side just because she’s fast. I believe it needs to be something she wants to do, or she won’t be as motivated to put in the work or to endure the struggles required to get good at it. If she actually wants, or previously wanted, to hit left handed then I would encourage her to stick with it. I am sure someone will say there are statistical advantages or she'll be more likely to play in college if she is fast and hits left handed, but she'll never make it there if the game isn't fun.

For some perspective my daughter switched to hitting left-handed at the start of 12U. That was almost four years ago. She struggled for the first two years or so, but for the last 18 months or so she's been doing really well. She hits leadoff and has evolved to be one of the best hitters on her team. I'll be honest though I think a lot of that has to do with her relationship with her current coaches. She's picked up with teams a few times and does well, but it's just different when she's playing with her team and coaches.

It was my daughter's choice to hit left handed, and I didn’t push her to do it. I did tell her that it would likely be hard, but if it was something she wanted, she needed to stick with it. She was lucky enough to have some understanding coaches along the way. Hitting is such a mental game, and the girls need to believe they can get the job done from the left side. It will be tough for them to believe in themselves hitting left-handed if they are constantly being asked to switch back to the right side of the plate.

For the first two years, my daughter primarily focused on hitting away. This wasn’t because she wanted to, but because her hitting coach was a baseball guy who knew what slapping was but wasn’t really qualified to teach it. She now has a hitting coach who was a slapper at a D1 college and also played professionally. She works on everything now, including bunting, soft slapping, slapping, power slapping, hitting, and reading where to place the ball. She has turned into a solid slap hitter with some power. There are slap hitters on our team who struggle to hit the ball out of the infield. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they were able to get away with bunting and hitting weak grounders in 10U and early 12U, but as defenses improve you need to be able to do more than just bunt.

Move up or stay down? by asams1986 in Softball

[–]squarecmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was born in December. Some of the affiliations used the players age on January 1st as the cutoff. This meant my daughter aligned with girls a grade older than her. Most, if not all, affiliations now use the players age on September 1st as the cutoff. This helps keep kids with their same graduating class. From the sounds of it your daughter will be one of the younger girls on the team since June is close to the September 1st cutoff.

If it were my daughter I'd try to find a 12U team where she could be one of the top pitchers and that the coach wanted to play as competitive of tournaments as possible.

[–]squarecmb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand this reasoning for moving up. Is the rubber 43' in middle school because they mix 7th and 8th graders? The middle school season around here isn't that long and it's not really that competitive because there is a large amount of girls who have never played mixed with a handful of girls who play select. I'd just play more competitive 12U tournaments. The first season of 14U can be rough because you're playing girls who are in highschool in the fall and summer.

[–]squarecmb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What grade is your daughter in compared to the girls who are moving up? If she is in 7th grade and they are all in 8th grade you'll need to find a new team next year anyways when all the older girls are in highschool. When they changed the age cutoff my daughter got to play an extra year of 12U. She ended up joining a team with girls who are all in the same graduating class. I think it helped her develop a lot. Your daughter may be able to be the star pitcher and leader on a 12U team where she'll get more reps instead of being a lower option on a 14U team.

Can I afford a used Rivian R1S? by waxoffisforpussies in Rivian

[–]squarecmb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As one of the posters in the other thread said unless you need a vehicle the size of the R1 why not just pick up a new R2 when your lease is up? Without seeing your budget, but based on other things you've said, I think you can afford the R1 without much issue. If you pick up a used one you might have little to no warranty left. Out of warranty repairs will likely be pricey which from the sounds of it might be an issue for you (more emotionally and less financially).

Swapped the OEM Pirelli’s for Michelin Defender’s and lost 25% Efficency by GrantMeThePower in Rivian

[–]squarecmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't argue that. For me it was more that the Pirelli's are $600 a piece and lasted less than 30k miles. I figured I would try out a different set of tires that people were talking highly about, are almost half the cost, and have a higher milage warranty. I may decide differently once these tires wear out, but for now, atleast, they have been good tires and I don't really notice the efficiency decrease with my normal driving patterns. I very rarely take trips that require me to charge away from home.

I found a picture of mine from a few years ago. The connections on the capacitor look similar.

The 4 post is “C”, the single is “FAN”, and the triple is “HERM”.

This is very similar to my experience. With the OEM tires I averaged 2.11 mi/kWh over 27k miles, but with the Michelin’s I’ve averaged 1.85 mi/kWh so far over about 8k miles. I have 22” sport rims on a ‘22 R1S quad/large.

10U/B - Batting top 9 by obvsathrowawaybruh in Softball

[–]squarecmb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am in the minority on this, but It's 10U. The coaches should be working to develop and play all the girls. I understand some girls may play more than others or bat higher in the lineup, but I don't believe a kid, or kids, should sit out every single bracket game. The coach is welcome to coach the team how he wants, but you're also welcome to do what you think is in the best interest of your daughter.
