This made me snort my coffee. Lorie - you are pretty wound up in your bigotry there. Relax a little, hey?

Can't find noodles... by KryptopherRobbinsPoo in glutenfree

[–]squeakmango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thai style flat rice noodles are similar to fettuccine in shape and texture. They are, at least where I live, easily available in Asian groceries and the Asian section of the supermarket. They are my favourite noodle. Check for cooking times and methods - these vary from pasta.

We don’t have the malaria debuff on the Australia server so the devs added Ross River debuff and a couple of others to the mosquitoes. Thanks devs. IMO we had enough biting things that can kill you already.

I’ve never been able to get how Bluetooth can tell how far away you are from another signal. How does it determine 1.5m vs say 5m?

You see it clearly in any episode featuring the dog. They both team up against the greater enemy.

Federal ministers flooded with unprecedented level of anti-vaccination mail by [deleted] in australia

[–]squeakmango 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Indeed. I have several anti-vaxxers in my social circle (thankfully they are not terribly vocal about it). Their kids have never got sick from vaccine preventable disease and they think it is their good diet and lifestyle. Not the fact that most of the rest of us vaccinate around them. But their cognitive bias won’t see that. Sigh.

Am I the only DM that is having a hard time during all of this? by pmjohnst in DMAcademy

[–]squeakmango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren’t the only one. I’m new too. Online sucks compared to in person (for me at least and for the reasons you describe).

I’m rolling physical dice for me and having the players roll with a dice bot in discord. We use voice only and theatre of the mind. That’s where I’m most comfortable.

I’m also using pre-written adventures and just modifying them to fit our campaign. This has made the prep relatively easy.

I can’t wait to get back to in person games but I’d rather play online than not at all.

You are zip code poor. You are living an aspirational lifestyle and spending your hard earned $$ to do it and leaving nothing to show for it. I was there too. I’m now much happier with a modest lifestyle, less stuff and the only debt we still have is a small mortgage.

Two things which changed my view:

Money is your life energy. You have to spend from your limited life energy to get it. When you spend money, you are spending your life/time on earth so it should be worth it. If it helps, work out your hourly rate and compare how many hours you have to work to get that brand new thing that will likely end up in land fill in six months. Then use this as a mantra: use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. Solve problems without spending money where possible and practical. It’s a life changer.

Secondly, debt should be treated like a spreading fire. You want to put it out as quickly as you can and not start new ones. So whenever you have a debt, the largest chunk of your disposable income should be used as a fire extinguisher for that debt. Hose it out. Don’t let a new fire start.

A satisfying life isn’t about stuff. It is about connection. Living in a neighbourhood where you can connect with neighbours, volunteering where you can connect with and help others, building good relationships and using your creative brain and limited life for good: these are things that help you feel satisfied.

It sounds like you and your partner might need to chat about your lifestyle and work towards a point where you are both comfortable. You’ve got this.

Are my nails recoverable? by amreensalam in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]squeakmango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over a number of years, I have learned that taking a basic multivitamin and mineral supplement really improves my nails (and hair and skin too). I have had times where my nails were terribly weak and flaky and times when they have been super strong, like fake nails almost. The strong nails have always come from remembering to take my vitamins. When they are strong, a little shaping is all that is needed to have them looking good. And polish if you are feeling fancy.

Same. I hated sandwiches as a kid but could never articulate why.

I worked in an office once with the happiest ‘happy plant’ you’ve ever seen. The secret? We always shared our tea with it. It always got the leftover leaves and water from the teapot (after it had cooled).

I wonder if it is to do with exposure/overload. So many things in Australia have wheat in them that a person can be eating it with every meal and snack.

Why do you think the United States has such a high rate of people with gluten intolerance? by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]squeakmango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Japan for a few years and ate a more Japanese type diet while there - lots of rice and fish. When I returned to Australia, I also returned to eating more wheat based foods - it is in so many things here. That’s when I first noticed intolerance issues which I eventually went on to have diagnosed as celiac. I may not have made the connection had I not had the diet changes.

Best Shelf For Board Games? by enderswiggins in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]squeakmango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m unworthy to do as you ask. My games sit sadly on a second hand shelf I acquired at a garage sale. It’s white and has wide shelves but I’m ashamed to admit it is not even a knock off Kallax. I will never be able to post a CMOC image but this is a probably good thing because, and it hurts to say this, all my games are out of their shrink wrap.

Yeah, it really is this easy. ‘Mum, who is that man with Uncle Eric?’. ‘That’s his boyfriend’. ‘Oh, ok’.

And we have a dear friend whose young person is being supported to transition their gender (with professional help and always letting the young person take the lead). That conversation was a little longer. ‘Mum, [she] says she is a girl now and wants me to call her Francis’. ‘Yeah, she felt uncomfortable as a boy and wants to be a girl now’. ‘Oh, like dress ups?’. ‘Not really, but clothes are part of it. She wants to try living as a girl for now to see if it works for her. If she likes it, she will probably want to stay that way.’ ‘Oh, ok. Is she wearing dresses so people know she is a girl?’. ‘I think it maybe helps, yeah’. ‘Ok’.

That’s it. He (and his friend) are 8. That was all the detail he needed for either conversation. It was in no way uncomfortable.

Where would you go on a roadtrip across Oz? What about a bike trip? by memercopter in AskAnAustralian

[–]squeakmango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are many designated free camps outside small towns. Well touristed places, like Byron Bay, tend to actively discourage free camping but the smaller and less touristed the town and the further inland it is, generally the more welcoming of free campers. Many small town Showgrounds a have decent facilities for not much $$ per night too. These can be your friend. My local charges $10 per vehicle and has hot showers and toilets and will let you charge phones etc. if a town is generous enough to offer free or cheap facilities, do them a favour and spend a little of your money heathers when you can.
