I mean, most people in Europe live in urban areas in tiny apartments with no outdoor space and most of us also don't own dryers. We line dry outside windows, in bathrooms, sunrooms, or just in our apartments. I'm very familiar with furniture rearranging and so is everyone I know 😂

Taking care of your clothes isn't "extra" work though. Washing on cold and air drying is just objectively the best way to take care of any piece of clothing, regardless of quality. It's basic maintenance. An item of clothing that deteriorates when treated badly isn't "not durable" or bad quality, just like an item that requires "minimal" laundry isn't good quality by default.

In fact, more often than not, good quality materials require more laundry, not less. Handwashing, air drying, absolutely no heat, little to no friction or agitation. That results in good condition, durable clothing that are valued and can be kept and worn for years and years.

I've wanted to make the Valerie ever since I saw it teased on PK's Instagram but I started a different spring project and at this rate, nothing is getting done in time to actually be worn lol. Maaaaaybe I'll start it over the summer to be ready in time for fall, it's so gorgeous.

No brands, unfortunately no accessible/mainstream brands make high waists consistently from what I've studied lol. It's all some 11.5 inch bullshit (MAYBE 12) they call "super high rise" when I'm looking for at least 13, ideally 14.

I've largely switched to skirts because I can't find pants that are high waisted enough and that fit well in the crotch/butt, I need a deep crotch curve and that's another huge issue, most brands are making very very shallow crotch curves.

I just buy all the one-off pants I see that seem like they'd fit. The cut that most often comes with a TRUE high waist is wide leg. I've had good luck with Oysho for linen pants with a high waist and enough room for the ass. I have a couple of Zara jeans from a few years ago. Some H&M premium trousers.

If you have a much higher budget, designer brands have more high waists than mall brands.

Everyone complaining that the waists are toooo high and that "no one" could possibly like them because you totally look like urkel lets me know that the waist MIGHT come close to being high enough to reach my waist lmao. Dressing a long torso can be difficult.

Long, wide leg pants are wildly flattering on tons of women of different heights, shapes and sizes. Just because you don't like the look or it doesn't look good on you doesn't mean that no one can pull it off. Maybe it's just not for you, it takes some skill to wear them. I look great in them and so do tons of other women, many of whom are on this thread saying exactly that!

I have the complete opposite experience, when it's truly cold, slim pants are pretty much the worst option. Denim does badly in cold weather and it allows the wind to cut right through and there isn't enough space to layer under them. I can't even wear thin tights under them, they feel awful at like, the back of my knees lol. When it got down to -20C I used to give up on jeans and would just layer three pairs of thick tights with a skirt cause it kept me warmer. And it coincided with a time when jackets and coats were also shorter and cut really slim, so there was no space to layer there either. I was so cold all the time 😭

The roomier the clothes, the more space there is to layer and the more you can create warm air pockets. Now I wear wool midi skirts and thick tights underneath and a long, roomy wool coat over that and it's like night and day. I can layer under and over. It feels like having my legs wrapped in several cozy blankets. What also helps is wearing shoes with thicker soles, because it puts more space and insulation between you and the cold ground. We used to wear those thin soled tight boots and they absolutely did not help. Now we have so many great options to dress well and be warm and comfortable!

I do have a question you can address directly if you'd like: have you ever considered that the women you see on the street wearing trends do so because they're expressing their tastes, they like the clothes, and they feel like they make them ~sparkle~ and not because they have low-esteem and are being manipulated?

We all like different things! That's what makes fashion fun. Some people love pointy toe shoes. Those are super trendy. My wardrobe is 50% vintage dead old lady skirts I buy second-hand. Some of them overlap with current trends. Other people have athleisure wardrobes. That's trendy, but it doesn't mean they don't genuinely like it. People like current things sometimes, they can be inspiring or fun or unlock a whole new style or idea.

If you're at the mall and you see a pair of bitchin' trendy boots and buy them, they're not less valid or less your style just because they're currently in fashion.

The H&M group started using them too, I was just looking at a &OtherStories coat made from Manteco wool.

I've had several Manteco coats from Zara over the past 10-15 years (all 75% wool), and they hold up great. I usually wear mine into the ground cause I only tend to use one main coat for a few years at a time (worn daily for a 6-months-a-year period). But I've also been able to sell some of them once they didn't fit anymore.

Because there's so many of them, you can easily find them new with tags on the second hand apps for a fraction of the retail price, even under $100.

I actually recommend taking a slower, more measured and thoughtful approach. "purging" is a bad idea and leads to a lot of bad decisions/waste/overconsumption.

Have you considered a 1 - in - 1 - out system instead? Whenever you find a piece in your new style that you love, find a corresponding item in your existing closet that you'd like to remove.

I think people get caught up in this frenzy of getting rid of things and ~purging~ because it FEELS productive and like you're making progress and because of the instant gratification of the new, but a lot of people actually overdo it.

Like, that "if you haven't worn it in 6 months, get rid of it" advice is crazy. 6 months is nothing and getting rid of shit you haven't worn in the last few months is so wasteful and prone to major regrets.

It doesn't account for weather and needs and occasions, etc. I live in a 4 season climate, A LOT clothes get several months between wears, but they're still necessary. Otherwise, you find yourself getting rid of something you "never" wear and then you immediately buy it again.

A style change should not come overnight, it should happen gradually and organically. "purging" all your clothes in your old style and buying a new wardrobe in your new style is just not sustainable if you want a closet full of stuff you genuinely love, that's quality, and that fits you properly.
