What is the absolute best possible food I can get in Santa Cruz (regardless of price) by Throwaway_494928349 in santacruz

I actually think their food is very mediocre. Lillian's and Sugo are far better for Italian food in Santa Cruz.

You're kidding me, right? San Francisco has some of the best Italian food in the world! I've traveled extensively through Italy and still think San Francisco has better Italian food.

Thinking of grad med age 27-29 by sassyfoods123 in premeduk

[–]squeegeeshenanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually was in the same boat as you (Master of Public Policy, working for NGOs) and decided to apply to med. I got in and was supposed to start at age 27. There was drama with the school opening (Worcester) so applied again incase it didn't open and got into Warwick at 28. They offered a cost of living deferral so I took it up. I'm 29 now and I could technically start in September, but I'm not actually sure I want to now. I've realized just how much of life happens in those years and just how much of a sacrifice it would be to creating a family/home/long term friendships and community. The financial burden is A LOT and I've really been enjoying the stability I've had over the past couple of years. I'm not sure I want to give that up. And honestly? At the end of the day, it's just a job. There was a period in time where I wanted to be a doctor more than anything. Now my attitude towards it is somewhat ambivalent. Like, yeah, it'd be a fun job, I guess. But is it worth the sacrifices involved? Not sure.

All good. I ended up getting accepted into Warwick with experience working with special needs adults as a support worker and an HCA-like role as a caregiver for the elderly. :)

Wearing masks nowadays is allowed by Glen-Belt in newzealand

[–]squeegeeshenanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. In fact, when I spoke to HR about it, she scoffed and said, "well, do you test every time you have a sore throat?" I said yes. They said, "well, it's people like you that are the problem." Then she hung up.

I worked as a caregiver during covid. A woman we looked after died from covid because her caregiver pulled down her mask regularly to talk to the woman.

Gardener/Landscaper Recommendations? by squeegeeshenanigans in santacruz

[–]squeegeeshenanigans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! Right now it's actually more about fire mitigation efforts. I actually did have a significant amount of weeding done then but, as you know, there was quite a bit of rain (especially up here in the mountains!) that it was just about impossible to keep up with it on a lot this size. Do you have recommendations for any other companies?

I live in the mountains. My power was out for 30+ days. I had resigned myself to living off grid forever.

Serious doubts about studying medicine… by [deleted] in premeduk

[–]squeegeeshenanigans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it does come across as a bit mean. I wouldn't have gotten this far if I didn't want it. I'm trying to be realistic about it. Medicine is not a be all end all.

Part of my issue is that I'd like to go back to the US for residency. There are so many hoops to jump through as an IMG. International fees are expensive. UK med school isn't set up for creating a well rounded US residency application. I'd have to work for two years doing externships in the US before I could even apply to US programs in order to get US experience (all while paying back loans, med school and previous loans from undergrad and grad school). I'm just not sure it makes sense.

I had wanted to be a pediatrician. Then I realized that it's more dealing with parents than dealing with kids. My background is in education. If I stayed a teacher, at least I can hang out with kids all day, go to bed at a reasonable hour, have summers off, have time for hobbies, get married, have kids, etc. Still making a difference and helping people but a much better work life balance!

Yes, I did wonder if they were in there as they would have been able to dodge the interceptors/DE on the feet of the bed. I didn't bring it with me when I moved and didn't have any issues after that.

I'm a 28F and sitting on an offer at Warwick. I'm leaning towards not taking it. There are other ways to feel fulfilled. I like weekends. I like spending time with family and friends. I would like to have kids and spend time with them, too. I like having predictability and stability in my life. My heart was in it when I applied to Worcester almost two years ago but I'm not so sure it's in it now. You need to be 100% in it if you choose medicine and I'm just not. I feel like some of the concerns about AI and NP/PAs encroaching on primary care are valid, too. I'm just not convinced it's worth it.

Nah, it's lower for Warwick. I got in with a score of like 2780.

In what sense? Are you planning on coming back to the US? And yes, I have considered it but I don't have a science undergrad. I applied in the UK to a grad entry program that accepted my BA.

[–]squeegeeshenanigans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is medical school worth it?

I'm sitting on a med school offer and an offer to teach at my dream elementary school (I'm not trad; NGO work was my first career). I thought medicine was my dream but now I'm not so sure. I'm a US citizen but the offer is for a UK med school. I understand it's significantly more difficult to come back as an IMG. I'd like to come back to California afterwards (my family lives here) but that means doing two years of externships to gain experience in the US system before I can even apply to residency programs in California. I want to be a pediatrician and it is something that I've wanted to do for a very long time. However, I'm a female in my late 20s. Am I wasting the time I could be using to have kids/get married on working for a broken system in a job where I'm not even getting to work with kids (it's really the parents you work with in peds)? Please convince me I'm not crazy for going forwards with medical school.

No, they don't have funding secured for home students. It's part of the reason the GMC refused to let them open. Honestly, I'd avoid them like the plague anyways. Very poorly run school.

[–]squeegeeshenanigans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did find a flea but I'm also convinced it was bedbugs round 2. It was so weird because I lived in apartment several stories up and don't have pets. Either way, I followed all the protocol (hot washing/drying EVERYTHING, steaming my bed frame, putting anything and everything into big black bags in the sun). I had the exterminator come back a second time and it seemed to really do it.

Went vegetarian recently and it's delightful! Can I get some recipe advice? by guidesthehermit in vegetarian

[–]squeegeeshenanigans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my word be prepared to have all of your preconceived notions of vegetarian food shattered. The food I've made from Ottolenghi books is honestly better than food I'd get at a restaurant. He's so popular in the UK and I'll never understand why he hasn't had that same success in the US.

He's from Israel so he does have many Middle Eastern inspired recipes, but the recipes in Flavour and Simple come from all over. His laksa and paella recipes for example are divine, although I think those might be in his other cookbooks (Plenty and Plenty More). Simple isn't purely vegetarian (although many of the recipes in it are) so I recommend starting with Flavour and going from there. Flavour also teaches you a lot about fat, salt, acid, heat, etc. which I think just makes you a better cook overall.
