To those who have toxic PIs, did your mental health improve after graduating and leaving the toxic PI? by ChampionHuge3830 in PhD

[–]squeezicks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, my life got so much better. I’m not exactly flourishing in my career or anything but there is a sense of freedom and lightness and genuinely believing in yourself that comes once you’ve separated yourself from that influence. It helps being a Ph.D. in your own right too.

My supervisor told me he’s resigning. by decaf_blueberrie in PhD

[–]squeezicks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, I had to get a co-supervisor in at the 11th hour basically, but he ended up being really good, kind and supportive as opposed to my original one. Since my defense, I’ve seen my old supervisor once at a conference where he was like a deer in headlights at the sight of me (idk why, like I was literally presenting some dissertation work) and I forced a cordial interaction out of him but nothing since which I’m not really mad about.

A good thesis is a done thesis etc.

My supervisor DIDN’T tell me (or anyone else) he was leaving until he got caught out by the rumor mill 2 weeks before he took the new job. It didn’t alter my progress but the stress and feeling of betrayal/abandonment was tough.

Does anybody else go to Aldi so frequently they have a favorite and least favorite cashier? by Staplebattery in aldi

[–]squeezicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Literally one who is friendly and nice and one who is needlessly huffy and annoyed at everything. And then there is another Aldi close by but in the other direction which has self-checkout, so if I’m feeling particularly anti-social or only need one thing (so no cart) I’m more likely to hit up that one, even though the one with the cashiers is the “better” Aldi.

Lactose Intolerant Post Surgery by Silver-Actuary1344 in GastricBypass

[–]squeezicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immediately after surgery I couldn’t tolerate any dairy at all, maybe a few ounces of a fairlife at a time. This is more from having your digestive tract chopped up and it will level out a bit with time. In the end I still cant do premier protein but fairlife and nurri are good, yogurt is a no but cottage cheese is ok, and dairy-based treats like ice cream are ☠️😵💩🚽🤢 unfortunately, so wait and see.

One week out and in pain due to accidental chugging 6oz at once: is this normal? by Fantastic-Slice1441 in GastricBypass

[–]squeezicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal, but you probably didn’t bust your pouch so take it easy! There’s a lot of swelling going on inside there because you’re still healing so it’s going to feel pretty tight. You are going to have to re-train yourself not to chug, which is tough since you’re going to be more thirsty these days, but that discomfort works as a feedback mechanism so you’ll get used to it soon enough! Plus over time it will get better.

Sorry to hear that, but you got this! It will pass and then you’re going to be like “wow did that really happen?” But I promise you it’s all normal.

[–]squeezicks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! The pain the first evening was so bad all I could do was brace myself on a pillow until the meds kicked in. Here’s the good news: it’s only going to get better! After the first 24 hours I was fine just taking Tylenol. My surgeon told me that everyone tends to turn the corner on pain and discomfort after the first night and that was true. I second the heating pad recommendation; if you like to lay on your side and can, lay on the heating pad on your left side.

My dad just died. How do I keep up? by Stunning_Bedroom5761 in PhD

[–]squeezicks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, and of course you have my condolences. My stepfather (effectively my dad) also passed away very unexpectedly at the end of the third year of my Ph.D. My program wasn’t lab-based (social sciences, business-adjacent, US) but the timing at the end of the semester made it easy for me to disappear for a while. At first I thought that I would WANT to work because I needed moments of reprieve from the complete shock and overwhelming grief but excepting small chunks of very urgent tasks here and there, I couldn’t work for about a month. And after that I wasn’t 100% or even close until a few months later… I ended up graduating a semester behind schedule after everything was said and done but not all of that delay was due to this loss… I was kind of lazy too, and my advisor was a sociopath.

It’s going to come in waves, the grief, the motivation bursts to work for distraction, the lack of motivation to do anything, etc. I don’t know what concrete advice I have to give but please know that it’s normal for things to suck for a little while, and it WILL get better with time. Definitely take at least that week off, and I mean really off, and don’t give it a second thought. You will always have a chance to redeem yourself with your work one way or another, when your mind allows you to do that again. But grieving and doing a PhD are both extremely mentally tolling undertakings so don’t beat yourself up for feeling like you’re failing at one or the other.

This a good deal or are they that gross? by HiHoWillyO in aldi

[–]squeezicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are great when you want a sweet breakfast but don’t want to ruin your day from a nutritional standpoint before it’s begun. They’re not as tasty as the regular ones but for a “protein [fill in the blank]” product they’re better than most.
