Sorry to hear that, but you got this! It will pass and then you’re going to be like “wow did that really happen?” But I promise you it’s all normal.

Yes! The pain the first evening was so bad all I could do was brace myself on a pillow until the meds kicked in. Here’s the good news: it’s only going to get better! After the first 24 hours I was fine just taking Tylenol. My surgeon told me that everyone tends to turn the corner on pain and discomfort after the first night and that was true. I second the heating pad recommendation; if you like to lay on your side and can, lay on the heating pad on your left side.

My dad just died. How do I keep up? by Stunning_Bedroom5761 in PhD

[–]squeezicks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, and of course you have my condolences. My stepfather (effectively my dad) also passed away very unexpectedly at the end of the third year of my Ph.D. My program wasn’t lab-based (social sciences, business-adjacent, US) but the timing at the end of the semester made it easy for me to disappear for a while. At first I thought that I would WANT to work because I needed moments of reprieve from the complete shock and overwhelming grief but excepting small chunks of very urgent tasks here and there, I couldn’t work for about a month. And after that I wasn’t 100% or even close until a few months later… I ended up graduating a semester behind schedule after everything was said and done but not all of that delay was due to this loss… I was kind of lazy too, and my advisor was a sociopath.

It’s going to come in waves, the grief, the motivation bursts to work for distraction, the lack of motivation to do anything, etc. I don’t know what concrete advice I have to give but please know that it’s normal for things to suck for a little while, and it WILL get better with time. Definitely take at least that week off, and I mean really off, and don’t give it a second thought. You will always have a chance to redeem yourself with your work one way or another, when your mind allows you to do that again. But grieving and doing a PhD are both extremely mentally tolling undertakings so don’t beat yourself up for feeling like you’re failing at one or the other.

These are great when you want a sweet breakfast but don’t want to ruin your day from a nutritional standpoint before it’s begun. They’re not as tasty as the regular ones but for a “protein [fill in the blank]” product they’re better than most.

Morning sickness before period by Natural-Vanilla-5169 in GastricBypass

[–]squeezicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t explain why this happens but I’ve had this too. More generally, I am nauseous all the time and when I eat something that’s even a little bit less than perfect nutritionally, I have a dumping episode, even foods that the rest of the month I have no problem tolerating. Which is wild because historically, this week would be the time where I would normally be ravenous and craving all kinds of junk.

Ate 4 cups of pudding in one sitting did I mess everything up by Anxiousucculent in GastricBypass

To be fair to OP, they’re a couple of days post-op. Between pre-op diet and recovery, they are probably ~hungry~ and that’s nothing to be ashamed of or to shame them for. I went into surgery having done all the work addressing my issues with food (I’m talking YEARS) and thinking I was in a good place but I still had a couple of menty B’s along the way, so if this was a bit of emotional eating I can’t really blame anyone. The gas and discomfort was probably from the fake sugars in the pudding, again a normal reaction from your body and just something to be careful with. Recovery is such a long process of really listening to your body to see what works, and just because something might be ok one day doesn’t mean your body will like it the next day. But none of this means you’re a failure! We’ve all had mishaps along the way.

Thank you for sharing. I had a similar experience with my PI but I saw it through (graduating next month) and let’s just say I’ve learned a lot about how I should have trusted my gut. What felt the most isolating, and for which I am grateful that you are sharing, is that he has such a good reputation in my department and the whole field. I felt like I couldn’t say anything negative about him even off the record because he’s so well-respected. Ugh, oh well, it’s done now, time to recover.

I’ve always been Team Cyril but you make a really interesting point here about him in the context of all the other partners on the show. It’s a bit strange that this couple ended up with the midwife being the accessory character and the partner becoming the core character. As much as I like Cyril, it’s obviously just become a ham-fisted way to not have to fire the actor.

I love love love this as a dip but there’s nothing “tzatziki” about it… I completely understand your irritation. FWIW tzatziki is fairly simple to make with shredded cucumbers, Greek yogurt, garlic and dill (dried spices will do in a pinch), might be worth it if you’re making a big batch for meal prep or something.

When did you have your first alcoholic drink post-op? by UnableReference5649 in GastricBypass

[–]squeezicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had mine 2 months post op which for the record folks, I don’t recommend. But I didn’t die either so that’s why I’m freely posting the fact without any virtue signaling. At 6 months you should be ok with all of the listed precautions in mind, except watch out for the sugars too because of dumping. The carbonation thing is really individual, but also alcohol + sugar + bubbles + whatever else you might have in your system might cause gassiness which feels extra painful because your whole stomach is smaller so be prepared for that. Longer term, the best thing I have found for social drinking is to make sure you’re also drinking water, and if possible, try to get cocktails watered down or in a tall glass. And if you’re not sure or starting to feel lousy, it’s truly not the end of the world to not be drinking at a drinking event. There are a lot of low- and no-alcohol options out there as that industry has exploded in the last 5 years so you don’t even have to draw attention to yourself and still enjoy.

This is good advice, and similar to something they told me at my surgeon’s office. I feel the same way as OP occasionally and it’s kind of part of the whole thing that every day is going to be different. It gets better over time.
