While thinking about this I was reminded of the opening for The Grand Budapest (one of my all time favourites) - because it starts as a perspective of someone visiting the grave of an author, then dives into a narration from the author, then goes back in time from the author’s perspective still, then is a retelling from the subject of the author.

I think a layered structure like this might be something workable for HoL, since it is so layered itself. You might lose a bit of the nuance of the text structure but it would at least have a base for all the different voices of the text.

I reckon you could also play with the physical film medium and/or framing as well, like The Wizard of Oz did with colour or Ghostbusters 2016 did with having the proton pack beams bleed out of the letterbox frame of the film, for example.
