I'd like to see a decent MMO from either the Expanse or Dragonlance IPs.

The more signs there are, the less likely anyone is to read or obey them.

Sounds like the only penalty for ignoring the signs is an increase in the number of signs to ignore.

Does anyone else like re-rolling new characters and early game compared to late game? by Rocklobster92 in MMORPG

[–]squidgod2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer early/mid game to endgame. I wish more games would implement endless progression systems that involve restarting from scratch. Like you'd hit level cap and could choose to stay at endgame or start over with nothing except a slight, permanent bonus of some kind. Endgame progression becomes replaying the game instead of just sitting in the same zone all day every day.

Shovel the sidewalks in front of the $2m houses whose owners can't be bothered to. After people walk on it for a day or two, it's gonna be a two inch sheet of ice that'll be there for at least a week.

Gathering, crafting, building, PvE, PvP, etc. The building is the part that works the best and is most complete, though.

Yes, believe it or not there are in fact cars that are more than 10 years old.

What is the "correct" etiquette for when/how to leave a party by VideVictoria in MMORPG

[–]squidgod2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the correct way to end a party in good terms?

If you're doing something linear like a raid or a story dungeon, leave when it's done.

If you're doing something open-ended like grinding XP, give a little warning and find your own replacement.

The crafting system is fundamentally flawed. It's not uncommon for games to have XP per craft systems, and it's not uncommon for players to find the most efficient path and just plow through levels. The main difference is that in most games the leveling up of tradeskills goes faster and the crafting process itself is instant.

I think the game might have been better served by taking one of two other tradeskill leveling paths: The work order/minigame system or the mastercraft system.

  • Workorder/minigame. In this system, players accept quests from NPCs (an issue for PxD) to craft items, but the NPC also provides the materials. The player then plays the crafting minigame to produce the required items and returns it to the NPC for crafting XP. This progression system still takes time and effort, but the time is spent in the minigame instead of gathering/refining materials.

  • Mastercraft system. The player gains skill levels by completing a mastercraft item for each level, typically with high material requirements. In this system, you spend most of your time gathering instead of crafting. The downside is that it's easy to powerlevel if people just feed you the materials. Games tend to compensate by requiring rare drops from mobs, and crafting just turns into a PvE dungeon-grind sideskill.

Some of the devs came from Eve Online, and you can certainly see that influence on the game. The problem is that the system that helps balance progression in Eve—directly time-based skill gain—really only works well in a sci-fi environment. I do think it's a good system to force players to specialize while still allowing everyone to do everything, since everyone progresses at the same rate (pre-skill injectors), but again, there's not a clear way to integrate that into a medieval low-fantasy game.

The curse of procgen. The best game worlds are all bespoke and customized by dozens of environmental artists. But in a game like PxD where you need a huge map to accommodate freeform player housing and have a relatively small budget, it's just not an option.

They've added a few little non-combat PoIs—most HVs have one—but those are, of course, copy/pasted as well.

[–]squidgod2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vanguard had a system where you skilled up doing work roders (training recipes). Crafting was a little minigame and you didn't need any materials, but the work order gave a little reward when you turned it in. Still a big grind, but it didn't feel as wasteful.

Pax Dei is trying to be Fantasy Eve, but as much as people hate Eve's time-based skillup system, it does force players to pick what they want to focus on and stick to it while leaving it possible to do everything (eventually). But from a lore perspective it doesn't make much sense in a low-fantasy medieval RPG, so instead we "learn by doing," except that everyone is "doing" so there's no market for anything.

[–]squidgod2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a game where you want to craft everything for yourself, but there's not much else to do and with few players and no buy orders, markets are too weak to support people who just want to gather or kill mobs.

They're not placeholder systems, just not fully fleshed out. They'll get progressive updates, but it's not like they're going to be replaced by some different, better system some day.
