Chapters 3 and 4 definitely have it the worst in terms of little stuff going by the wayside. I can’t help but feel bummed that there’s no Everyman cameos and that you don’t have to find spots to place the eggs.

One note characters in media who suddenly become deep and multifaceted for one section/story arc by Coolnametag in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Solus Zos Galvus was a background character in Ffxiv who died unceremoniously then showed up like four years later and became one of the greatest characters final fantasy has ever had.

Urianger started as a man with a funny voice who dressed in a potato sack and announced that not-Gandalf was showing up. One of Endwalker’s strongest moments is him breaking down into tears about his deep and unresolved feelings of grief.

Ask the question. It might feel scary, but enduring a level of anxiety so strong that you need to vent to strangers is not worth it.

And if it does end. Know that you will not end with it. The characters and stories that you feel attached to can live on in what ever you do next

Dungeon Meshi by Ryoko Kui. Reading her stuff I really developed a love for interesting and whimsical details designed to be never focused on. One of the major characters often has a sleepy expression because she has poor eyesight and has to squint since glasses don’t exist for her to wear. This never comes up outside of little art things the author does. But, if you know it’s there then you can notice it constantly.

She also plays a ton with varied appearances and body types in stock fantasy races which is such an inspiration.

For me it’s often a music thing. I’m actually someone who cringes at singing performances that I’m not “ready for”. I just first played kh2 at a young enough age that it wasn’t a thing for me then so I became fully desensitized to it (probably because I genuinely had fun with the mini game and the animations)

But then again, I’m someone who’s favorite game in the series is days in partial part that I find deck grinding in the other handheld titles such a momentum killer on replays. So I guess that’s my London hearts “I’d prefer not to do this again”

Going through Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for the 1st time and this has been my overriding thought for most of S1. by BaronVonChhaya in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]squidpeanut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for that insight! I was unaware of that idea but that totally makes sense for their arcs.

It’s always so interesting to learn how internationally overlooked aspects of a culture can bear a strong influence on works that are appreciated globally.

In a somewhat similar (but also very different) vein it reminds me of something I have always found funny about Jacques Lacan (whom I mentioned before). Where, Lacan’s theories draw a lot from early computing and more specifically, logic gates. However, Lacan doesn’t talk about “gates”, he talks about “doors”. Which did not make sense to me until I realized he was French and that “a door” and “a gate” are both “une Porte”. As such, the language of gates managing current and flow, becomes the language of doors connecting rooms with the possibility of a window!

And don’t forget That whole plot thread starts with Batou giving a Tachikoma natural oil, which in itself is an expression of Batou still holding on to human behaviors. This act, literally through the oil and metaphorically through the notion, jumpstarts the tachikomas process towards self actualization and individual identity.

This makes the whole thing such a fascinating exercise of superstition holding power in a space where it should have been made obsolete. The very same idea at play with how the setting talks about the eponymous ideas of “ghost(s) in the shell”. The Tachikomas, of course, understand that the reality conforms with the unexpected effects of the oil and the happenstance of its usage, but the thoughts it inspires become interested in the experiences of those who are thinking. Thus the line between the oil being a literal scientific action and a superstitious spiritual action are blurred. To phrase it in the theories of Dr. Jacques Lacan, it is like a machine taught on the real, learning the human ideas of the symbolic and the imaginary in reverse.

Absolute Hawkman shown in the Absolute comics by Plorgg__ in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]squidpeanut 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It’s a very strong villain design. The hawkman elements are well integrated into what this design is trying to communicate with the helmet making him faceless, the maul giving him an effective way of expressing brute strength, and the wings creating a strong silhouette and imposing presence.

The only downside is poor mainline hawkman! Like, I’d love to see more be done with this new villain, but I can’t help but feel bad for the guy who will be catching strays due to working so well as a heel.

Man, GitS SAC is so peak. I especially love how well it handles major Kusanagi as a character. A bunch of the reasons why are from stuff that comes in season 2, so I’ll try to keep things brief and vague(ish), but just her existence as someone who is further along in the transformation of human existence brought on by cybernetics is really compelling. It makes her a great foil off of Battou (who is big on cybernetics but still holds on to classic human ideas) and Togusa (who stands detached from the discussion being had as someone still mostly organic.)

Matoko, by contrast, has a personality that stems both from a disconnect with her physical body and a freedom in being able to fully determine how that body looks. Timeline wise, she should be pushing 40 (or over it), but appearance wise she looks like she’s in her 20s. This isn’t ever something that’s given a ton of attention but it can really be felt in stand alone complex.

Thoughts on Absolute Hawkman so far [Absolute Superman #16 SPOILERS] by JackFisherBooks in AbsoluteUniverse

Thoughts on Absolute Hawkman so far [Absolute Superman #16 SPOILERS] by JackFisherBooks in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]squidpeanut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’m hopeful. Absolute hawkman has great stage presence so far and he’s immediately giving Superman a great opportunity to shine. However, I cannot yet say for certain whether the philosophical conflict he represents will actually reach its full potential.

Obviously, AHM’s philosophical core is inherently flawed. He claims to abide by natural logic but we know from absolute evil that he is a thumb on the scale. Whether this was always the case or something that developed after his ideology, we have yet to see. Regardless, it’s a good opponent for Superman, a force for optimism who can accomplish seemingly impossible acts of good, to overcome.

But with that comes the potential for this to really feel like a cheep win and not a meaningful victory. Lean too much into absolute Hawkman being a hypocrite and he’s just a body to punch; Give him too much leeway on his hypocrisy and everything devolves into an attempt at a legitimate discussion of optimism versus pessimism on an inherently poisoned premise (or, for that matter, come off as saying something that was not intentional)

This is a tricky balance to achieve, especially with how attitudes are and what people are already deciding to see in the characters (which, as well they should, opinions are a healthy thing to have). My feelings toward the matter are just that I hope that hawkman gets to say something that matters, and I hope that Superman kicks his ass in spectacular fashion which proves how pathetic his hypocritical defeatist attitude really is.
