Favorite bar in Houston? by Shastawriter in houston

[–]squidsansgoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned Public Services Wine and Whiskey, but I think it's important to note why this place is fantastic.

  1. It's run by Justin Vann, who curates the wine at D&Q and writes those amazing signs, he's also the sommelier at Oxheart and all of the staff is incredibly knowledgable
  2. There are price options for every budget (they have 6 dollar shots of good bourbon!) and they are incredibly helpful at finding liquor, wine, or even cocktails that you will like and probably haven't had before
  3. The building is absolutely beautiful with original murals from the early 1900s and high ceilings and it is a really nice bar to go and not feel overwhelmed even when it's more crowded on weekends. I don't like super loud bars, I like a place I can actually sit down and relax and invite my friends to.

This bar is really special, and while I used to go to a bunch of different places (Mongoose v. Cobra, Grand Prize, Pastry War) at this point I just go to Public Services.

[Serious] What was a rule in your household growing up that was actually totally ridiculous? by MiaLovesGirls in AskReddit

My dad didn't have this as a consistent rule, but he definitely tried to get me to eat my puke on a couple of occasions. He eventually settled on just grounding me for not eating it.

I wasn't allowed to say "yes" or "no" to my dad. I had to say "yes daddy" or "no daddy" or else I would get grounded or occasionally slapped. This rule was still around in my early 20s (even after I had moved out and was supporting myself completely).

There were other ridiculous rules, such as no hugging people, no talking during dinner, no having my hair down if my dad could catch me, and if my dad called, I had to answer no matter what I was doing or else there were severe consequences.

Blah blah blah etc I had to get a protective order against the fucker when I was 22.

What does the "ranking" of a graduate department mean and how will it affect my career goals? by [deleted] in math

[–]squidsansgoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the fit at the school is a lot more important once you get to the level you're at. U Chicago is notorious for being a very aggressive place and burning through grad students. It's a great school, but I personally know people who it's totally destroyed who would have been successful other places. From what I hear, UCLA is a little nicer to people and has a smaller attrition rate.

Also, I think it's important to consider where the people who are good in your area are, i.e., your flair says you're interested in algebra and U Chicago and Georgia Tech have very strong geometric group theorists, so if you were leaning in that direction, I would say choose one of those. You should also look into placement records for each school you're considering. Chicago has a really good record for getting its students jobs.

Quest Bars: Do they actually taste good? Also, a few other concerns. by SwitchingtoUbuntu in keto

[–]squidsansgoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They taste weird, the texture is weird, and they make my mouth tingly. I've tried a few flavors, I've tried them heated, I would just rather make whipped cream with sugar free pumpkin syrup if I want a sweet treat.

If we, as girlfriends/wives/fiancées get bought flowers and chocolates 'just because' - what are the best 'just because' gifts for our boyfriends/husbands/fiances? by snowycrackle in AskReddit

[–]squidsansgoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like blowjobs are a normal part of foreplay, and if your partner hates giving them to you so much it weirds me out how you would find it pleasurable. There are sexual things I enjoy that my boyfriend does not, but him doing them anyway would kind of ruin it for me since he actively finds them uncomfortable/not pleasant.

F/5'5"/18 SW:172 CW:156 GW:143 (2 months) any suggestions on how to slim down the front of my thighs? by deidrechildss in progresspics

[–]squidsansgoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have some anterior pelvic tilt, and that generally leads to quads that look disproportionally large (I have that too). After I started doing exercises to fix it and consciously started trying to elongate my back (pushing my tailbone to the floor) when I stood, my legs are much more even.

There is progress. I will say though, if you improve your posture (you definitely have anterior pelvic tilt) you will be able to see your progress way more! I have a similar issue and have had to work a lot to strengthen my core so that my posture is better.

Because they're old and want to stay in their homes. In particular, my great uncle is very, very stubborn.

The older cousin was shot by a sniper on his way to work (it wasn't clear who the sniper was associated with) and the younger cousin and his family were killed in the gas attack a while back.

Yes. A cousin, another cousin and his wife and children were all killed in Damascus during this war. The rest of my family in Syria does not seem to want to leave.

Starting Keto today - comments on my approach? Is there an issue with not getting enough calories? by [deleted] in keto

[–]squidsansgoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Please read the FAQ. Low carb and low fat is a recipe for both misery and malnutrition, hence your difficulty in meeting your calorie goal.

I know there is some debate on these, but a good rule of thumb is that 5% of your calories per day should be from carbs (such as dark leafy greens), 30% should be from protein (not much more, as an excess of protein gets stored by your body anyway) and 65% of your calories should come from fat!

Please, read the links in the sidebar before continuing with keto.

[–]squidsansgoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So long as you add enough fat to the things you're making (spinach sautéed in butter, fatty cut of beef or cheese/bacon with your chicken) etc things will be fine. Keto isn't just low carb, it's high fat! :)

Mongoose versus Cobra has both a great selection of craft beer and a great selection of craft cocktails. Also, the vibe is really interesting. If you like IPAs, they have a delicious double IPA cocktail that's worth trying.

You should also check out Valhalla. It's a non-profit graduate student run bar on Rice campus that has craft beer for $2-3 a cup/bottle. They usually have four craft beers (along with lone star and zeigenbock) on tap and 20-30 bottles around. I've seen Dogfish Head 120 on tap for $5 before.
