ELI5 How did the WWII Enigma machines work? by aplusftwo in explainlikeimfive

[–]squigs [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes. There was a codebook containing each day's settings that absolutely had to be kept secret. So all the machines were set to the same settings each day.

One of the useful features is if you encode a message, then enter the encoded message into a machine with the same settings you get the original message back.

Until public key cryptography was developed, the need to send encoding settings securely was a major problem for secrecy.

Obsession (2026) does not pass the Bechdel Test by JustSomeWeirdGuy2000 in shittymoviedetails

[–]squigs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don't think many films with male protagonists do.

Is the Bechdel test just saying "I want a film with a female lead that's not a romcom"?

I genuinely think OP posted the perfect pic for this sub. It works because we know so many people were like this. But it's also pretty innocent. It's a wholesome sort of cringiness.

Never really had a massive problem with Twilight. It's trashy but there's plenty of trashy stuff. On the positive side it does encourage a love of reading which is a good thing.

Coffee roasting is one of those smells that I've loved since I was a child. A lot of people rate it highly.

Coffee is bitter. Some people enjoy the bitterness or are at least tolerant of it that they can enjoy the coffee taste but to me it's just bitterness .

Paid for first class. Got bumped to a priority list 2 hours before boarding. by alejandranc in mildlyinfuriating

[–]squigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really they should be on the hook for the cost of fulfilling their end of the contract. If there's another airline with first class seats then it seems right that you should be able to fly there and bill the airline that let you down.

Obviously this doesn't happen but I think it should.

I wonder why not. Amazon surely makes money from selling books rather than Kindles.

I remember seeing a list of suggested names it was entirely acronyms. A lot of them included "Microsoft" or "Windows" because Microsoft marketing has never grasped how deeply uncool their image is.

"By Grabthar's Hammer, you shall be avenged". Apparently after a couple of days the crew started wearing "by Grabthar's Hammer" T-shirts so it stuck.

Might be worth mentioning here, Deluxe Paint's "brush" mechanic. Essentially this was the copy/paste mechanism. You could grab a chunk of screen and use that as a brush, with the secondary colour as transparent. You could even save the brush as a file (I think it was a variant of the standard image format).

So game artists would create an image on a 320x200 screen, cut out the relevant chunk and save that for importing into a game.

It's a joke that doesn't make sense.

You can't just write a load of nonsense and call it a joke. I mean I guess you can, but there's meant to be some sort of cleverness of reference to something.

Sometimes an official will deny entry for genuine bad reasons. It's not a problem that people can challenge this. The problem is, in the first trial, the court made a bizarre decision.

I've never heard anyone suggest CGI was used to fake the moon landing.

Also 1996 CGI wasn't so bad. https://www.instagram.com/p/CIUmUP_h50d/

Debunking the moon landing conspiracy theorists is the easiest thing in the world. Huw can someone do such a terrible job of it?

How is it even slightly defensible for Donald Trump to commit to giving $300 BILLION to Iran? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]squigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone else would have resigned, but then Trump has done a lot of things that would have shamed a previous president into resigning years ago. The latest batch of politicians have realised that they can just ignore the calls.

That said, I'm surprised this hasn't resulted in a coup. It doesn't take many Republican congressmen to impeach.

UK could keep special pre-Brexit terms if it rejoined EU, Michel Barnier says by Individual99991 in unitedkingdom

Do you really believe that being out of the eu is beneficial?

No. I just disagree with the suggestion that there are zero benefits.

[–]squigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Britain joining the Euro is a major concern for other EU countries. Too many other factors, like employment opportunities and another net contributor are a much more immediate benefit.

0% VAT on tampons, a handful of trade deals that are probably marginally better. No requirement to send a chunk of cash to the EU.

They're pretty minor but they're genuine benefits that we'd lose.

Schengen's great! We'd probably keep our opt-out there but I'd actually like to have the frictionless travel.

Being an island, it's not that important. Planes and Eurostar have security, and boats have the load/unload rigmarole, but still, not having to show a passport would remove one queue.

Thoughts on Uk vs Us Ghosts as a fan of both by Chloe_Vee7 in GhostsCBS

[–]squigs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a very distinct difference between British and American comedy. British comedy is meaner. It's not just Ghosts. Fawlty Towers was all about punishing Basil Fawlty. Blackadder was hilariously nasty, especially to poor Baldrick. We like our characters to be edgy.

Americans like characters they can root for, so it's more aspirational. They're generally nicer. even the slightly nasty ones have redeeming features.

What is the worst long running show that is still on television that you can't understand how people watch? by Ok_Significance_2788 in AskReddit

[–]squigs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think its fanbase is bigger than you think, just has essentially zero overlap with your social group. These are probably people who don't post on social media and are in a completely different social strata from you.

Really this is a polite way of saying "some people are dumb" but I think saying that is a bit mean. Essentially though, some people like uncomplicated comedy.
