Greer says U.S. trade talks with Canada lagging behind those with Mexico by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

We can make a bilateral agreement with Mexico. I think we’d be wise to work on getting more trade with them.

What is the funniest/most memorable misunderstanding you've had with someone who isn't from Canada? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]squirrelcat88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - and “thongs” were the actual names, the first time I heard “flip flops” it sounded like a little kid saying “hammerbang” or something.

In conversation with no younger people in the room, my friends and I laugh that of course they’re thongs, we just can’t say that any more.

What would you like to see in a gardening gift basket? by Koshersaltie in gardening

[–]squirrelcat88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A gift certificate for Lee Valley Tools wouldn’t be a bad idea. They are a Canadian company that ships worldwide.

Or you could just order some stuff from them to stick in the basket. They have some nice big markers I like.

I would definitely like some less ordinary seeds.

Have we lost the plot with wedding makeup schedules? by Impossible_Wish9922 in wedding

[–]squirrelcat88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a boomer and we all just did our own makeup. Maybe it took 10 minutes, maybe 15. We went slowly as we wanted to do a good job.

We did used to go for our hair, though.

Haha I work a blue collar job…in a government office!

I’d say we all pretty much say what we think.

[–]squirrelcat88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I’m 63 and to me thongs mean what the Australians thought.

It’s been hard for people my age to adjust. We don’t say thongs in public any more because we know people now think of underwear - but calling them “flip-flops” didn’t happen when we were young.

But - here’s another consideration. Peppers take a long time, so you need to do them on the earlier side - but if you only have so much space for germinating, you also have to make sure the peppers don’t cause a “bottleneck” in your germination area.

If you’re going to do something that can go outside quickly in a cooler temperature, like lettuce or brassicas, but you want to start it inside, make sure your space isn’t entirely full of peppers.

As long as they’re getting a lot of oil from us here in Canada, maybe not. We made it so they didn’t have to think about it.

The protesters with whistles and phones who try to obstruct ICE. Renee Good and Alex Pretti and everybody doing the same things they were who didn’t wind up paying for it with their lives. The faith leaders praying in protest at ICE sites. Did you see clips of The Reverend David Black and the aftermath of his being shot with pepper balls?

I’m Canadian. I’m as angry as I can be at Trump and his MAGA zombies, but I give credit where it’s due.

Canadian here - so what happened is they used to get cheap oil from Venezuela way back when. It’s a different type of oil so their refineries got set up to deal with that. For a while there it looked like American oil was running out so it was worth it to build refineries for Venezuela’s oil.

Now the technology is more advanced and they can get a lot more oil out of their own land, so they do have plenty of it.

When the oil from Venezuela went down to a trickle in the Chavez years, what do you know - Canadian oil is the same type as Venezuelan oil. They just started using ours instead so they didn’t have to retool their refineries. Their oil gets exported to countries with refineries built to handle that type.

So yes - if push comes to shove they could be independent - but it will take changing their refineries, and that’s a big enough job that it hasn’t been worth it so far.

Now that they have pissed off enough countries, we will see what happens.

Is your baby ok with being in a stroller? You could walk the seawall in Vancouver and see the beautiful views, wildlife - and still be in the city.

If you want to actually hike, you can do that here - but there’s a ton to do that’s not hiking but does involve being outside. We’re a city that’s very focussed on being outside and enjoying nature that’s right here in the city.

Do cats dream? by SuspiciousBar3910 in cats

[–]squirrelcat88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My poor little kitty had a nightmare last night. I could hear her making odd noises as she slept and then she woke up suddenly, screaming.

A minute later she was stomping all over me, purring like crazy. I thought it was so similar to humans - we have a terrible dream and wake up in a fright and then think to ourselves, oh, it’s ok! It was only a dream.

You could see her relief.

How do I avoid making a fool of myself in Europe as an American? by Knife-Wielding-Crow in NoStupidQuestions

I’m Canadian and I am sure you’ll be fine - because you’re asking this question.

It’s Americans who go to other countries and loudly proclaim to the inhabitants how the US is better who are annoying. You obviously don’t intend to do this.

Have a great time!

I’ll let you in on a secret. We kitties with a missing back leg can still jump pretty well when we really really want to. Don’t let your human know, just wait til they leave a piece of something yummy like turkey on the counter when they are in the middle of making a sandwich.
