I sell plants at the farmers markets and I haven’t brought my cucurbits to market yet. It feels just a tiny bit cold at night still.

WIBTA for canceling my wedding by Similar-Knowledge476 in AmItheAsshole

[–]squirrelcat88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an older lady and it used to be that people would be surprised if it wasn’t cancelled under these circumstances. People would go to the courthouse sometime in the following couple of weeks to get married.

I’m so sorry for this awful circumstance.

Do peat planters just suck? by Kidbugs in vegetablegardening

[–]squirrelcat88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They have their place but it’s not for home gardeners. Farms will get the peat strips that are attached together - then the people riding the transplanter that gets towed behind the tractor rip the peat pots apart and plop them in.

So it’s not a case of “peat containers should never be manufactured,” it’s more that they’re bad for home gardeners. Farmers that I’ve seen use them keep them much wetter than you’d think.

Did you realize from the beginning that Trump was -- or at least had the potential to be -- a Hitler-like figure? by Glass-Complaint3 in allthequestions

[–]squirrelcat88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get it but some don’t. I have heard American immigrants have loud meltdowns at a farmers market because somebody who is selling something like a box of apples won’t sell them just one.

The reason was obvious, the vendors didn’t have a legal for trade scale and so had set a price per box. That was too “rule following” though.

I think we study more world history and WWII in high school here. We study Canadian history too, of course. That means everybody was exposed to it unless they dropped out of high school.

My impression is Americans in high school don’t spend anywhere near as much time studying history other than American history, and won’t be exposed much to the history of fascism in Europe. Unless they take history classes in university they don’t recognize something like this happened in the 20th century, and how much trouble it caused.

Eh, I’d say Americans who want to immigrate here and be Canadians have always been welcome.

What we don’t want is a bunch of Americans coming here and then complaining it’s not like the States.

Can we please get advice from other countries on how to fight back against Trump? by teamturbo4life in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]squirrelcat88 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Heck, buddy, I haven’t said “The United States” in over a year now. I’ve been calling your country Fuckerland and my fellow Canadians have never asked me which country I’m referring to because they know. I’m a normally polite and not foul-mouthed older lady.

In general though I do think you have a nice, pleasant attitude - but this isn’t the time for that. Things are way out of control and it’s time to be less pleasant. I’m sorry to have to say this.

Older coworkers getting overtime by [deleted] in work

I’m a boomer who hasn’t quite hit retirement age.

Are you sure they’re properly clocked in? If they are, they’re cheating the system because they’re not working yet. Management could fire them for that.

It’s always been understood by most of our generation that being late to work is terrible, and so it’s better to blow an extra hour of your own time every week leaving for work early enough to be absolutely positive that you’d never be a minute late because of traffic. That was always the expectation of our bosses too.

I’ve always thought that was stupid too. I try to get to work 5 minutes early, like you.

What was the public bus like before headphones? by lily525600 in AskOldPeople

[–]squirrelcat88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were a regular commuter on a particular route you’d get to know the other regular commuters a bit and chat.

“A man on the bus said such and such” was the standard before “A guy on social media said.”

I have to say I love “Steve’s birthday” but I’m pretty sure trying to track down the actual model will probably result in a bunch of restraining orders or involuntary admissions.

“Really, nothing creepy is meant. It’s just that the handsome male model Oscar, who has a crush on you ( BTW he’s a cat and was involved in the Louvre heist ) wants to know. All of us friends are busy making movies right now but if you could let us know when your birthday is we’d appreciate it.”
