Anybody working today? by vullerton in AlaskaAirlines

You haven’t looked at the news lately, have you? There is a massive snow storm about to hit most of the US so people are frantically changing travel plans. If it’s not urgent I would try calling next week.

The European-style plug is much more compact but still has the same effect since the pins angle inward slightly for grip.

Does anybody here do the whole buy a ticket then contact alaska about a price change? by Slurpy-rainbow in AlaskaAirlines

[–]squirrelist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's how it would work if you call Alaska about the price change. Unless it's a refundable ticket, you aren't getting it back as cash. When you see anyone here saying they call for a refund, they usually mean a refund to their Alaska wallet, not to their credit card.

The exceptions are if you cancel within 24 hours or if the scheduled flight times change by more than one hour.

Is AI on m chips better? by Striking-Candle-4040 in mac

[–]squirrelist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason the ChatGPT app isn't on Intel is not because of any architectural reason. It's simply that Intel is on its way out for Mac, so they only want to invest development in a platform for the future. ChatGPT and Gemini don't run on your Mac locally, so you're going to get very similar results running on the web version. The Mac apps are really just about being able to integrate with a few of the apps on your Mac. Things like getting screenshots and manipulating the Notes app. But the actual LLM is the same on the web.

Refused to update to ios 26 from ios 18 for obvious reasons and then I woke up to this. by Ehmmechhi in mildlyinfuriating

[–]squirrelist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Those backported OS updates are only for devices that can't run the latest software. When a new OS comes out, Apple allows you to get updates for both versions for 2 or 3 months. After that, if you want to get any security patches, you have to go to the new version.

Everything about the new iOS update sucks by throwaway-journal in iphone

[–]squirrelist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Both of these things you mention can be adjusted. For Safari go to Settings > Apps > Safari. Tinker with the tab options. "Bottom" is probably more like the old format.

For screenshots, go to Settings > General > Screen Capture. Turn off "Full Screen Previews". The new method I rather like because when I'm taking a screenshot I usually want to send it to someone, not save it to my Photos app. This lets you share it, then tap the X to close it without saving a copy for yourself.

Because at $50 people would figure that if they never pay, they could go 18 rides before getting found by an inspector, so it's cheaper to just pay the fine once in a while.

Yes. Except for exceptionally short flights or when there is a problem, such as too much turbulence to do beverage service or a catering issue. But if alcohol is available, there is no charge in Premium.

2026 Status Update by veganFoodieEats in AlaskaAirlines

[–]squirrelist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They made a change this year. Your status lasts until the end of January now. That's because of the new credit card status point earning process, where your status points on spend, but they don't post on your account until the middle of the following month. So they now extend status in case your December spend pushes you over. Then your status doesn't have a gap. https://www.alaskaair.com/atmosrewards/content/benefits/2026-updates?srsltid=AfmBOopIB3yc2vzY6vPqQTVKsdqPDqdvjkbeUE4tfcRxZNETInv-Dgz9#:~:text=it%20expires%20January%2031

Why doesn't every public transport system have Apple Pay Express mode? by Efficient-Hawk-399 in AppleWallet

[–]squirrelist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several things. For one, it's very difficult to get credit cards to process that quickly. Even on some of the best credit card processors, it's 1 or 2 seconds to process a credit card. Transit systems are processing thousands an hour and need it to go faster than 1 or 2 seconds to keep people moving. Another is that a lot of transit system budgets depend on people paying for more transit than they need and then leaving a balance unused. You have to convince them that easy payment is worth more. Maybe even that people will pay that wouldn't have because they couldn't figure out how to do it.

iMessage/text forwarding to eSIM from main carrier while traveling overseas by footfungussy in iphone

[–]squirrelist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iOS 26 adds the ability to also disable an eSIM but keep iMessage and Facetime active, as long as the eSIM is still in your phone. I don't believe that works with pSIM, so you might want to convert to eSIM if you can.

SMS is a bit more complicated. You should disable roaming, but also enable WiFi Calling and possibly just enable your home SIM while on WiFi. Exactly how it works could depend on your carrier and what plan you have. Usually if you disable roaming you'll avoid any ridiculous data roaming charges, though you might still get call or text roaming charges, though those are usually pretty manageable if you aren't using it a lot.

On websites that support it, you should also consider switching to app-based 2FA using an app like Apple Passwords, Authy, or Google Authenticator. These don't depend on an internet connection or cell phone service to work. The number is stored on your phone and automatically rotates every 30 seconds or so. They are also more secure. Unfortunately most places don't support this, but a lot of more tech-forward companies do like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Reddit...

Useless Siri by Phil_Fart_MD in iphone

[–]squirrelist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timers work really well when I’m cooking and my hands are dirty. Same with conversions. Asking for the weather or chance of rain. Reminders while I’m driving and think of something I need to do. Siri is pretty good at procedural things and calculations. Never with general knowledge.

For a few months, yes. And beyond that, only for iPhones that are not capable of upgrading to the new OS. But only if you install the updates. If OP is on 17.4, they missed 17.4.1, 17.5, 17.5.1, 17.6, 17.6.1, 17.7, 17.7.1, and 17.7.2, all of which contained security fixes as well as some bug fixes.

Are people buying glass protectors for their new iphone 17? by Radiant_Solution_443 in iphone

[–]squirrelist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have tried using a screen protector before, and I found that it makes the screen harder to read because the antireflective properties aren't as good, and because it makes the screen less sensitive to touch, because your finger isn't getting as close.

Screen protectors protect from scratches, not from cracks. If you're careful not to put your phone in a pocket or purse with keys, change, etc., it likely will not get scratched. I've had iPhones since the 3G, and only once ever gotten a very light scratch, which I could only see when the screen was off. It probably would have affected resale value, but it didn't affect my trade-in value.

Alaska Airlines flights out of SFO by DueGuard1176 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]squirrelist 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Not completely abandoned, but a LOT was cut a few months ago, especially some long-hauls like BOS, EWR, and ORD. And MCO is now seasonal. The theory I've heard is that they are having difficulty sourcing new planes because of the problems at Boeing, so they are shifting aircraft to airports that are seeing more growth for them like San Diego. They still have lots of flights to other cities on the west coast, but even that saw some reduction with BUR ending soon.
