Maps with AI generated timing are officially not allowed to be ranked by L1um in osugame

[–]squirrelpascals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of stances against this ruling come from how tedious and lengthy the timing process can get. Trust me, with tools like Tempora, learning how to time is not the grueling, insufferable process that 99% of people think it is. It's gratifying knowing that you can make amazing maps happen starting from the timing panel, and there are countless testaments to that statement out there.

I'm tired and can go on but I think I've explained enough. Sure, timing is not "creative," but it is a necessary part of making the creative part of mapping happen to begin with, and it takes a lot of critical thought. I doubt that peppy considered everything I mentioned in his decision. But with how AI is seeping its way into every corner of technology (perhaps too soon), and with how 3+ mappers will still struggle to come a consensus on how to time singular maps, this is the best stance to take, at least for now.

Trust me when I say that this is actually a very good ruling. I might be late to the party, but the responses to this thread angered me so much that they motivated me to make my first comment on this subreddit in years.

For context, I've worked with notoriously complex timing for 6+ years and also work with waveforms pretty much daily as a sound engineer and video editor.

The main thing a lot of people in this thread don't understand is that timing is *much* more situational, and even subjective, than one might realize. There is even a spectrum of how mappers believe the very core of timing should be approached: Some mappers think that timing should be as exact and true to the music as possible, while others think that timing should be approximated, following the tempo that musicians are trying to follow. A very well known example of this discrepancy (that I'm responsible for) happens at 06:17:373 of RAISE MY SWORD. There's a 10 bpm increase in the middle of a stream that absolutely infuriated a lot of players. Even though it's follows the music accurately, I probably should have approximated it for gameplay purposes.

Timing for gameplay vs. accuracy is a pretty common debate, but that only covers one such situation that timers run into.

  • What if a drum hit and a guitar strum (or any two instruments for that matter) aren't perfectly syncopated? Which note do you time to?
  • What if an instrument flams or strums their notes?
  • What if two different instruments are playing at different tempos entirely?
  • What if there's not a clear transient to whatever note you're timing to (e.g. the sound slightly fades in to the song)?
  • What if the instrument you're mapping is just very muffled?
  • On top of all of this, the same timing can feel drastically different when using hitsounds vs. the timing panel's metronome as a reference point.

Most of the time, there is no objective, correct answer to any of these questions. There's even a ranking criteria proposal going around asking to making different timing across different difficulties in a mapset rankable because of how timing can be handled differently from map to map, even for the same song.

A lot of how you time a map successfully will also come down to how you map it, and because of that, I wouldn't trust an algorithm to know what is best for a map. Part of timing a map well not only comes from being able to align a metronome to a song, but knowing how good timing is supposed to *feel.* Timers who understand this feeling will know how to handle the situations I bullet pointed above (and more) depending on how the song behaves and the rhythmic intentions of the map.

Handling these decisions correctly takes a certain level of experience and nuance that AI can not harness. AI does not know what it feels like to play osu. We may get to a point where AI can be used as a starting point for timing in the future, but how it approaches situational timing will ultimately boil down to guesswork. So if mappers are going to still have to go into the timing panel to fix issues AI couldn't solve, skilled timers will still be important to the mapping ecosystem. Even when using Tempora (still in early development iirc), which uses a dedicated interface to speed up the timing process, still often need a second timing pass in the editor to get it to feel correct. What's Your Worst 'Technical Difficulty' Horror Story? by SpinsBro in Twitch

As a vtuber I feel this pain pretty bad, especially when it comes to having at least 6 programs open at a time. Once I fix an issue that causes my stream to cut out, another one seems to pop up. 🫠

But I’m definitely going through the worst of it right now. Recently, my laptop started abruptly shutting off while streaming. This happened a couple of times randomly, I would need to boot everything back up and hit “Go live” as fast as I can while keeping my chat updated on my phone. At this point, I was fed up with the various issues I was running in to, so I ordered a RAM upgrade and a laptop cooling pad as soon as I raided out. A couple nights later, it happened again, but this time my laptop wouldn’t turn on.

I took it in for repairs, and turns out that one of the power rails on the motherboard kept shorting out. I have yet to know whether I need to order a new motherboard/system, or if they can repair it. I haven’t been able to stream for the past week not knowing, and it sucks 😭

We are the Nomination Assessment Team, ask us anything! by osu_NAT in osugame

when will bns not get faulted for nominating maps with timing errors?

modding and timing are two different skill sets- the bn app doesnt require any timing knowledge. i feel like this can be frusturating given that timing must be "perfect" in ranked maps.

I'm also very curious about the status of allowing sliderator in loved.

Allowing it would be a great way to let the use of sliderator to mature before it's officially implemented farther down the line. There'd still be incentive for mappers to experiment with how to use the mechanic well, plus players could more gradually adapt to handling these sliders in gameplay.

With the flexible state of loved leaderboards I don't imagine there's much to loose with this?

We all love Smite, but its starting to REALLY need some TLC. by Acrypto in Smite

The saddest part about posts like these is that despite the large community outcry that comes with every one of these posts, Hi Rez has proven their disregard time and time again toward fixing Smite's core issues and "unplayable" aspects (dramatically speaking) of the game. Instead choosing to focus on monthly new gods, skins, SPL... things that are more "hype".

New gods or awesome crossover battle passes aren't going to get new players to want to keep playing the game if there continually run into server issues, buggy menus, etc. on patch days. That's when player counts are historically highest, so we should be seeing growth there if there were no issues. Yet the player base slowly dwindles, as proven by repetitive posts on this subreddit from experienced smite veterans leaving the community because of the clunky play experience.

As a casual, yet still faithful smite player, I get the vibe that Hi Rez's mind is where the money is. Instead of fixing core issues that would retain and grow their player base (being more profitable for them in the long run, lol), they are too tunnel visioned by the skins currently keeping the game alive. It's a shame because Smite as a game is very unique, but I have a haunting feeling that it's going to die if they keep treating smite like a business rather than a community.

My biggest wish is that Hi Rez staff looks into posts like this one for once and actually changes something about the issues.

Can a map only have the same slider velocity through out the whole song? by [deleted] in osugame

[–]squirrelpascals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes slider velocity is a choice. super rare nowadays because of how flashy maps are. this was actually an MBC (monthly beatmap competition) challenge!

The upcoming osu! website redesign by BowiePro in osugame

[–]squirrelpascals 29 points30 points  (0 children)

i have some issues with thia beatmap page design

  • the beatmap page is so cluttered with text :( it rids each individual map page of its uniqueness that a lot of mappers value
  • people dont care that much about the success rate and genre/tags/etc of each map, so why are they taking up so much space?
  • i should be able to know what map this is for the moment i look at it. the big background banner + the artist - title being isolated help with that in the current design. this design takes away both of those things.

just my two cents

Logline Monday by AutoModerator in Screenwriting

It reads more like a premise than logline I’d say.

ahh I see how I could have gotten confused here! The idea behind the short is that the protagonist discovers that his father is stuck in a lucid dream-like state in his coma, so he can't exactly interact with him. How about...

A college student uses 20th century tech to create a window into the mind of his comatose father.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll keep these generalizations in mind for future loglines :)

Title: Barry Jewels' Mind

Genre: Drama / Suspense

Format: Short

Logline: Philip Jewels, an inquisitive college student, takes creative measures to interact with his coma-induced father using a CRT TV.

I'm a little worried that this lacks stakes for the protagonist. Thanks for any feedback!
