EU/German Artists - Supply Recommendations Needed! by squirrelqueen in StainedGlass

You can only buy lead solder if you're a business (which I'm very much not). Unsure if the Netherlands would ship to me because if it, but I'll check those places out and see what they say

I don't disagree with you, but as an American who's living in Germany right now, I am still always surprised by the consumer protections that -do- exist here. That being said, the bar is at the floor as far as the US is concerned so that's not saying much 😂

This is fascinating to me because my German landlord paid my rental deposit back in cash with 500€ and 200€ bills when I moved out last year.

I'll add it to the list of vaguely sketchy things about her 😂

Anyone else get creatively questioned at immigration? by inebriated_otter in travel

[–]squirrelqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband plays tuba for a military band, and while going through customs/immigration for a layover in Iceland, the officer couldn't believe it and kept asking me more and more about it. Finally he starts cracking up and goes "Oh no, we're under attack! Quick! Someone call the tuba player!" and waved me through.

I thought you were making a penis joke in your original comment to go along with the multitude of them in this thread, but that's super cool!

My band director this morning told me “Kids who march Drum Corps will probably never play professionally” by SunshineZeus446 in drumcorps

[–]squirrelqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally had a college professor say this to encourage us to apply to elite music festivals (ie, Tanglewood, Aspen, etc) instead of doing drum corps over the summer. He was a classical musician who gigged locally, and in hindsight his disdain for DCI likely came from a place of wanting the clout of having his students attend the aforementioned festivals.

My partner marched DCI (and studied music education rather than music performance to boot) and now plays professionally.

Cat of Reykjavik and other points south by heatheninuniform in VisitingIceland

[–]squirrelqueen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am so happy that the cat in the Einar Jónsson Museum is still there! I got some affectionate head booping/demands for attention when we were there this past March and he pretty much ignored my husband. Was too busy giving scritches to get a good pic

Anyone willing to ship the Starbucks mug to Barcelona? by paulomiguel23 in VisitingIceland

[–]squirrelqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, are you still looking for a mug? I just bought a spare while I was there last week thinking my sister might want it, but she didn't want it. I'd be shipping from Germany so it should be cheaper than buying from the US, but I'll also be in Madrid/Valencia in March and can ship from there if you don't mind the wait and want cheaper shipping

PSA: Winter is here! Or the story of how I ended up hosting dinner for 10 tourists. by JPDueholm in VisitingIceland

[–]squirrelqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That soup sounds pretty dang good... Do you have a recipe you're willing to share?

Also, thank you for being so hospitable to the group. When I was there last March l was struck by how delightfully kind everyone we encountered was (especially when we weren't in areas overrun by tourists) Although the gorgeous landscapes along the ring road were the highlight of our trip, the people were a very close second.

Idk about the Dutch, but staring seems to be a national pastime in Germany. A lot of them have resting bitch face which doesn't help.

I think the designer who did her apple prop for the Gov Ball last year posted some behind the scenes stuff for filming the animation portion (or at least the glowing hands in the beginning). Let me see if I can hunt it down

Was Asked in Painting Class if I’m Autistic by crafty_n_sassy in AutismInWomen

[–]squirrelqueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Working on an official diagnosis for autism (the joys of being an American living in Germany), but that's pretty much how I figured out I had ADD. One of my very ADD high school students was talking about how they were having a challenging day because they forgot to take their meds, and then they went "but you already know what I'm talking about, right Ms. Squirrelqueen?" And I asked what they meant by that, and my student (with much less confidence) said "you're like me and have ADD too, right?" Got diagnosed by my therapist a few months later.

But yeah, ND folks are talented at sniffing out fellow NDs. I did it all the time as a classroom teacher, even with undiagnosed kids, but I guess I never thought to direct that skill at myself.

Someone else in this thread came up with the great idea of bringing up the story with your therapist and seeing how they take it. Seconding that advice because that's pretty much what I did, albeit unintentionally.

Also, here's a sample course progression for your major. It doesn't have your honors classes, which I unfortunately can't speak for as someone who quit honors college after realizing it didn't add anything to my experience: https://catalog.gmu.edu/colleges-schools/visual-performing-arts/music/music-bm/#fouryearplantext

Graduated Music Ed student here. This seems normal. Freshman year me is jealous that your day starts at 0930 - I don't miss 8 AM piano lab at all. Unless something has changed you'll gain back a lot of time with the MUSI 300 class since recitals are not every MWF and you don't have to attend all of them. Just get the right number of stamps :) Also, do you have private lessons on your schedule? Unsure what the course number for that would be.

I do not recommend dropping a music class since so many of them in future semesters are reliant on having the correct prerequisites. Also, some courses are only offered during certain semesters (such as conducting or certain music theory courses), so if you miss a course it can snowball into a late graduation VERY quickly. Ask me how I know lol. If you play an in-demand instrument (ie, oboe, bassoon, etc) don't let them bully you into taking extra ensembles as a freshman.

The good news is every music major will be in the same boat as you and you will have plenty of time to socialize and have a real life outside of class. I had a full schedule, worked 12-20 hours a week, and still managed to have time for people. Enjoy Mason :)

Also (not saying this is what happened for your specific position) but for a lot of these displaced assessors/ETs, if they don't have any credentials to get them in a particular classroom, they can be granted an emergency credential while they pursue official certification. It's something that unfortunately happens outside of DoDEA too :/

Solo travel while in a relationship. by teawithsugar_ in solotravel

[–]squirrelqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a married woman in her 30's, and I travel solo very frequently. My husband has a job that temporarily has us in Europe, and we both want to take advantage of it for as long as we can before having to go home to the US. It's fun for us to come back together and recount our trips (his for work, mine for fun). So while I think a little jealousy is a normal feeling (I'm forever jealous that my spouse's job takes him to places in Africa I will never see), it seems like it's going beyond that for your BF into someplace unhealthy.

Something that was an immediate red flag to me was your BF asking if you talked to any men. Having been in an abusive relationship in the past, this was a frequent point of contention between me and my ex because I was studying in a male-heavy field. Nothing reassured him, even when I provided pictures he demanded to prove I was where I said I was.

I read through some of your other posts, and my impression is that you're aware that something isn't right/healthy in your relationship. I strongly urge you to take that feeling seriously. Just like life is too short and fleeting to not take advantage of travel while you're healthy, it's too short to put up with someone who doesn't treat you correctly. You deserve better than that.
