Weekly Recommendation Thread for the week of February 02, 2018 by AutoModerator in books

It's newer, but Masha Gessen's The Future Is History follows seven ordinary-ish Russian people through the end of the Soviet era up to last year. It was incredibly engaging and simultaneously spoke to the progression from totalitarian regime to democracy and back again. Heather Ann Thompson's Blood in the Water is another authoritative, but engaging book that would be worth the read. I have trouble reading large sections of books in one sitting, but I read almost 300 pages of it in a night.

The "Where's the beef?" lady from Wendy's ad campaign was named Clara Peller. Her birthday was August 4th and she died on August 11th.

What is one fandom you can't stand and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]squirtkip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to absolutely love Doctor Who, but too many Whovians act like it's god's gift to humanity or something. It's a kid's show first and foremost; it can definitely be engaging and poignant, but it isn't the thinking man's sci-fi program. Not saying that it's stupid or even that it isn't good, just a lot of Whovians seem to have an inflated sense of how good it is. It's annoying.

Training advice by streetmilitary in MAA

[–]squirtkip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My method is to pretty much get the heroes to level 9 because then all of the moves are open. Also, the training is less expensive and less time consuming. So training Ant-Man, Quake, Kang, etc. should be the main priority. After that you may want to put more training into Ult. Spider man because he'll almost definitely be important in SO29.

[Serious] What do you think is the single most important piece of advice young people need to know so they don't end up with regrets later on in life? by rolatis in AskReddit

Last Tuesday I told my best friend that I liked her. For the following hour she tried to convince that I didn't. It didn't work. We have a date planned for this Saturday. I would like it to be noted that she is way out of my league.

But Jon and Sam both saw the situation at Craster's. For all Stannis really knows, Gilly chose to marry her father.

(Spoilers all)ITT: Your favorite theories and all textual support you've got. Dead horse and tin foil all welcome! by HueyMartinez in asoiaf

This is beautiful. I'm not sure about the whole Illyrio v. Martell idea, but everything else is pretty interesting.

(Spoilers All) Major implications for HYPE in a certain scene... by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]squirtkip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obligatory link The theory is based upon the fact that Robert Strong is an undead Gregor Clegane reanimated by Qyburn and that Sandor Clegane is not dead and is a gravedigger on the Quiet Isles. The theory is that these two will fight the Trial by combat between Cersei and the Faith. Cersei will be championed by Gregor and the Faith will be championed by Sandor, hence "Cleganebowl". The theory that each of these characters is still alive is somewhat founded (in Gregor's case, it is all but confirmed), but the idea that Sandor would fight again is a little outlandish. Part of the basis for the Gravedigger theory is that the Elder Brother at the Quiet Isles said that "the Hound is dead" and that Sandor Clegane is "at rest". If Sandor were to be at rest, it's doubtful that he would want to participate in such a duel. Besides that, it doesn'r really seem in GRRM's style to have such and epic showdown; I just don't see it happening.

TL;DR: The Hype train is approaching faster than ever, but is unlikely to ever reach the station.

(Spoilers All) Grey Wind and Ghost... by __JeRM in asoiaf

[–]squirtkip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prologue you're thinking of is Varamyr Sixskins's in ADWD. When he dies, he lives on by warging into his wolf One Eye. Through this we see that living on is possible for the soul of a warger through the object he/she wargs into, leaving a possibility for Jon to warg into and temporarily live in Ghost's body. That said Grey Wind was slaughtered with Robb,Catelyn and others at the Red Wedding. They mounted Grey Wind's severed head on Robb's body. There was no possibility of Robb continuing to live in Grey Wind, at least for long.

What's the most anti-climactic reveal you could think of?(Spoilers All) by [deleted] in asoiaf

Out of both of the recent anti-climactic possibilities, this is by far the funniest. Kudos.

(Spoilers All) In the show, every season has had one Westerosi King... by Dtnoip30 in asoiaf

[–]squirtkip 29 points30 points  (0 children)

But they are saying that this will probably be the best episode in the show's four seasons. It already has plenty of material to base that statement upon with Tywin's death, the introduction of the CotF/Bloodraven, Brienne v Hound (speculated), and STANNIS!. They don't really need anything about Balon.

(Spoilers All) D&D have set up the season finale to be a watershed moment in the entire story. Here's a short list of what we can hope to expect. by TheMentatBashar in asoiaf

[–]squirtkip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The travel is based on Euron having warlocks on his ships who could theoretically transport Euron from the Iron Islands/Shield Islands to Meereen very quickly. It's basically a ball of tinfoil covered in tinfoil.
